$800 first prize, $200 second prize
Yes, that is right. A New Zealand Natural Selection only lan.
If that sounds nice to you, then read on.
How about a chance to meet your clanmates, and play in a tournament against the best clans in NZ? All for a share of $1000 in prize money!
Here's how this will work:
You are expected to bring your own computer(s). No computers will be provided for you. We might be able to hire computers if heaps of people would prefer that though, at extra cost to those who need them. Contact me if you want to lend us computers to use for this, or as servers.
Janurary, 2004 we will have a hall in central Auckland booked. People are encouraged to form into groups of up to 10 members (at least 7) of which 7 will play any particular match. Many of these groups will be existing clans, some will be random people who love NS and want to take part but are not in a clan. You are encouraged to select your group on regristration, and each group will have a nominated leader.
All those who don't want to be in a particular group will be able to form groups when they arrive at the lan, although people are strongly encouraged to form groups before the first day of the lan. Each group will get a circle of tables facing inwards, so that you all sit in the middle, with space in the middle for people to stand and watch. The only people who will be watching during actual matches will be other members of your group and probably some referees to catch out people using custom models or lighting (i.e cheats). We will be running cheating death compulsory on all the servers, and will also have a copy of the latest version of NS and all required software (except for a legal version of half-life) available for download. If we find that you are pirating half-life, you are likely to be encouraged to leave.
The people who are not in groups will have their own space with a simple linear layout where they can place their computers, connected together in a fashion that allows fast filetransfers between them and the servers. At all times throughout the lan, there will be (at least) a couple of dedicated servers running the latest version of NS available. There will be NumberOfGroups / 2 dedicated servers to run a round robin tournament, over NumberOfGroups rounds.
I personally anticipate at least 8 groups turning up, plus a couple of groups formed at the lan. This would be about 100 people.
The lan will run over two days (with no organised playing overnight, and no restrictions on what games you can play / filesharing at night). During the day, people will be strongly encouraged to only play Natural Selection, and filesharing is not allowed (the load would slow down the network topoligy we plan to use too much).
Computer speakers are likely to be allowed as long as they are quiet (at the admin's discression). I expect there will be a lot of noise from speaker users, and if this is excessive speakers will be banned, so bring headphones. Speakers will definately be banned on saturday night after 9:00PM.
Here is a tentative schedule :
First day (Saturday)
7:00AM : Setup (for those of us organising, you don't have to turn up here, unless you are keen to help)
10:00AM : Expected arrival of participants, setting up of computers, etc.
Filesharing allowed, all games allowed, meeting people encouraged
12:00PM : Finalisation of Groups
Lunch provided (Pizza, chips, soft drinks, cordial, etc) Spend some time getting to know everyone Plan your strategy
1:00PM :
Begin several rounds of 'inital' practice, which will involve several games all against different clans, which allow you to get an idea of your strategy and to practice. Inital stats generated for kudos sake
Filesharing disallowed, other games strongly discouraged
6:00PM :
Dinner again provided (Perhaps KFC or something)
7:00PM :
Strategy forum, where volunteers can talk about marine / alien strategy with other people (perhaps we will do a stage thing, perhaps not)
All games allowed, filesharing allowed.
9:00PM :
Overnight, sleep on floor, go home whatever, lights dimmed, all games, filesharing allowed.
10:00AM : (Sunday morning)
Planning time, two hours where you are encouraged to perfect your strategies among your groups (or even between groups) for the tournament
11:00PM : First round of tournament (which is a full round robin, if feasable), play against the group immediately above or below you determined by the
standing from the game yesterday
No filesharing, ns only play.
12:00PM :
Lunch provided, similar to that on Saturday
1:00PM :
Full round robin continues, match against every other teamNo filesharing, NS only play.
7:00PM : break for dinner. Expect that round robin about 7/10 done by this point (each game 30 mins long, 2 games per round, 10 ten teams = 10 hours)
8:00PM : Tourny resumes
We now have a full ladder based on the number of wins as aliens + wins as marines (so a draw against a particular team means you get one point for winning as aliens or winning as marines).
10:00PM : A rematch between the top two teams in the ladder. The winner comes first, the looser comes second. Projector showing a hltv view of the game, as for many of the earlier games. Expect to see heaps of people watching the game, with snacks provided.
11:00PM : Awarding of the tournament prizes (Expect a cash prize of about $800 for the best group and about $200 for the second best group). Hopefully we can organise some spot prizes also.
12:00AM : Lan continues until people are totally sick of hanging out together. All games allowed, filesharing allowed
(Monday)
12:00PM : Lan is finished here if not before.
14:00PM : Cleanup finished by volunteers (hopefully)
Obviously lots of logistics will have to be organised. Looking at an entry fee at the moment of about $60 (covers food, infrastructure, hired stuff, and spot prizes + cash prizes). Spectators are allowed to come, with a door charge of $10, and are not allowed to eat or to play. I might revise the price and the priviledges (i.e come on sunday for all day, allowed lunch for $20, but not allowed to take part in tourny (can bring computer and play on the public server))
Public display / sharing of porn, drugs, and alcolhol are totally banned during the tournament. We don't want drunk people ruining the atmosphere, and we don't want police interest . No Smoking inside at all. Probably organise a small security force to make sure that computers are not stolen, and people who abuse the rules are removed.
For the network infrastructure, I have access to a very fast 96 port switch. Do not worry, when you are not in the tourny you can do some serious leeching.
We will run a projector throughout the entire lan, with some games shown, some scores and perhaps some more information.
If you want to volunteer to help, can provide equipment (incl. servers and large switches + cables) or want to sponsor this event (we will put up your posters in return for some spot prizes / useful equipment or internet services) please PM or email me.
I also hope to arrange a high bandwidth connection so we can host some of the action onto the internet. This would mean that people from the world at large could join our public servers, and possibly by prior arrangement (and some money for the prize pot) play by remote in the tourny. I might even be able to get HLTV working (so you can watch the games) or something neat like that. We will arrange a filewall that will not allow any access other than remote access to the applicable servers. All http traffic will have to come from authorised (i.e admin) computers. Any files that several people need from the internet will be downloaded by an admin on request. We don't want anyone leeching our internet bandwith (because it wouldn't go far among 100 people).
Please PM me if you want more information. You can also find me on the NZ GamePlanet Server very often. Still open on what weekend to use, will announce this soon. This thread will be the main information point for this lan, but will get a website set up in December, and will edit this post to reflect new information.
I hope to see a good clan turnout at this event. Remember that if you have a clanmate who doesn't live in Auckland, special arrangements can be made so that they can play in your group from home.
