So this means that somebody haxed your steam and stole your cd key?

Sounds like a bug to me. At least your steam.exe didnt completely vanish twice like what happened to me a few weeks ago.

Edit: By "Sounds like a bug to me." I mean it simply sounds like steam just forgot your cd key.

Luckily you already have registered your CDKey to your current email account, so they will have a bit of trouble getting in with YOUR CDKey

But if they manage....then yeesh, damn....

I'd say it sounds more like a Steam glitch which killed your .INI file. That or someone getting into your registry. In either case, the pic 'Oh nos! My megahurtz are being stoeled!!11!' comes to mind, reading through this and immediately blaming it on a hacker.

Does your firewall have any kind of logging capability for intrusion attempts? In either case, run a virus scan (http://housecall.antivirus.com) and run Windows Update to make sure you have all the latest security patchs (assuming Windows XP on that one).

    I r t3h x4x0r, i munched joor CD key.

No really. If the firewall detected a breach it isnt doing it job. Firewalls are designed to stop access to unassigned programs and whatever else, not just detect them. And if in the remoteist chance your cd key has actually been stoln, first i will laugh at valve, then i will think wait, your registered so HA they cant do nuthing with it.

*All right, this appears to have served its purpose for the moment. All it does at this time is toss dirt at Steam which already has enough coming at it through few faults of its own. No other program would get this much flak. Heck, WON didn't and it was FAR buggier than Steam for MONTHS. But not too many were around to experience that, so they just got a shiny, moderately well-working authentication system. Welcome to early-version software, folks. Editing to avoid bumping this, so it can fall gracefully off the front page. -Talesin*
