The mechnics of blinking

Game wise, not story wise.
How does teleporting work for Blinky? Do you target a spot with a 'weapon' interface or do you press a key and get x seconds invisible and you can move super fast? Just curious, PTs can probably answer this.

Last time the PTs/Devs said anything about Blinking it didn't involve turning invisible with increased speed. You might be able to find something if you do a search.

To blink, you select the appropriate ability, point your crosshair in the direction you want to go, and push the left mousebutton.

You're then instantly transported to the first polygon you would 'hit' with the crosshair.
It's pretty intuitive in game, you can't teleport yourself through walls or other solids.

And, for the record, correct me if i'm wrong, you cant blink through doors.

STC!

As long as that door is made of polygons, you're right.

STC!

I take it you don't get stuck on triggers because they're not rendered?
• GwahirGwahir Join Date: 2002-04-24 Member: 513Members, Constellation
one thing I've been wondering about, what if you blink while crouching, do you remain crouching or reappear standing then crouch? Might be an issue for vent jumps.

To tell you the truth, I never tried. Blinking into vents is horribly tricky, plus I'm more of a lvl1 player (read: I suck and never get enough RP to evolve into lvl4).

Oh, and no, you don't get stuck in triggers. Although you always may blame it on them

What about Grating? Can you blink through grating or does it count the transparent blue as a polygon?

I really think it needs to be clear of anything you wouldn't be able to walk through normally. Of course that means you can still go through that little slit left in the wall...

trigger brushers are not a part of collission detection or anything else. just entity information. so no, they don't impact anything.

If you wouldn't be able to fit through it normally, you can't blink. So, you can't blink through a gap in some pipes to the other side of the room if you wouldn't normally be able to walk through that gap. A lot of the limitations on blinking are just so you don't get stuck in walls and have to kill yourself. Believe me though, once you get used to it, blinking is a very powerful and effective tool.

In the refinery on bast, I once blinked up to the ceiling (maybe . .4 stories up), looked down, saw a marine, blinked down right by him without taking falling damage, and slashed him apart. There are as many tactics and uses for blink as there are people on these forums. (well, maybe)

one question: is there any cooldown delay for blinking? or u can go all around blinking ?
i know there´s a cooldown because its obvious but, i wanna know the time it takes to recharge.......

yeah, there is a recharge rate for your energy, but thats dependent on your upgrades . . . obviously, I cant give numbers. Theyd be STC anyway . . .

kool so a fully upgraded lvl4 = blink mastah

To my understanding, you can blink as much as you want, but when you run outta energy, you stop blinking till it recharges.

When you blink, do you come out with a weapon selected or do you still have it on the blink action?

If the latter, how long does it take for a lvl4 to switch "weapons"? And come to think of it, DO the aliens have weapon-switching time? Doesn't seem like it'd make much sense, but I can see why it'd be included for gameplay and aesthetic reasons.

thats an interesting point, i guess you wouldnt have to wait to change weapons, if your going from say, a jump attack to a bite attack on a level 1 right??

To my understanding you have to pull out a blink weapon and click to use it like any other weapon. Did anyone play Giants: Citizen Kabuto with the Sea Reapers? You right clicked where you wanted to go and you flew to that point. The distance you flew depended on how much energy you had. I hope blinking is like this but instead of flying you instantly appear at your destination.

In BZ2 when you blinked, when you held the cursor down to decide where you want to go, it gave you a little green light telling you where you were going to blink. Would be nice...
• Diogenes_DogDiogenes_Dog Join Date: 2002-05-13 Member: 610Members
That's a good idea. Just some sort of visual indicator telling you where you'll end up. Like a ghosted model of yourself "standing" where you have the cursor pointed.

OMG, think of the lag. A thousand times worse than the RPG laser in HLDM
• Diogenes_DogDiogenes_Dog Join Date: 2002-05-13 Member: 610Members
Why would there be significant lag? You wouldn't have to use the real model. Just a goofy sprite that *looks* like the real thing from a distance. It only has to be seen from one angle, and usually not up close.

And only one player would see it, so you wouldn't have to send the info out. At the very worst, it'd cause one person to chug, and it wouldn't be hard to have it be toggleable.

I hope you guys are making blinking cost bassed on the distance blinked?

that might get tricky too, cuz if you just do really short blinks then that would be really cheap?

scratch that; solution: have an base cost for blinking and add more to it as you go past a defined distance

BZ2 had blinking, it was even called blinking and it worked in exactly the same way as it does/will in NS (thats as far as I can tell).
All I can say is, blinking is one of the best things in the game and its why I play as the scions (aliens) so much.
• LegionnairedLegionnaired Join Date: 2002-04-30 Member: 552Members, Constellation
You cant control how far you blink, only what you'll hit, so a stardard crosshair would show you where you would end up.
