a.k.a why we hate hostrocket
Enter a few weeks ago, I took over readyroom.org and all was good. After about a week of owning it, the domain suddenly died on me. Research and whining to joev showed us that the domain had expired, it seems a bit of miscommunication when Monse left it for me happened as I did not know the domain was expiring.
After emailing back and forth with Monse, we came to the conclusion that while rr.org had no owner, Monse had forwarded emails of the domain expiring to joev. Joev claims he never got such emails. This explains why it died so suddenly. Monse figured the problem was taken care of, while joev and I had no idea it was about to expire.
Next problem, I go to renew it with a new host (godaddy.com) only to find out Monse domain company is temporarily holding the domain (so it gives him time to renew it or such). Monse clues in on this, and proceeds to renew the domain out of his own kind pocket to make it easier so we don't have to wait for the domain to go back on the market.
2 days have passed, domain has still not been renewed. Monse and hostrocket have never been on good terms, and it seems nothing is being done on their end. After checking how long they hold the domain for, we find out they have control over it until Oct 7th, 2004...! A "temporary hold" for 1 year, that seems a little bogus. I know they won't be able to hold onto it for that long and do nothing, it's domain squatting, and that's illegal. But they sure are dragging their heels. And since they have control, we can't transfer to a new domain host yet. Monse is presently ripping them out via email, while I await news of his efforts.
So that's why it suddenly went down without notice, and that's why it isn't back up yet D: I'll keep you all posted!
(yes, I looked into other domains, if Monse can't get it soon, Ill persue this option).

The domain 'redemption period' is the most ridiculously thought out system in the history of the domain industry.
Sorry, my company works with a domain registrar so I know far too much about tthis, and its screwed people over so many times.
Sounds like the registrar isn't being very helpful.
My suggestion, is investigate avenues of recourse with ICANN if they're not being helpful, and if you do get it back, transfer it away to another registrar.

Basically the registry is pulling the scam, but the registrars are making sure they go along for the ride.
Now to get those Steam skins before hostrocket decides to become nubs again
