Help! Error Joining Servers Using Steam!

Ok, I used to play the old non-steam ages ago, and then stopped for a bit when cs 1.6 came back.
Then, I thought, ohh, lets play ns on steam!
So, I installed a server on isogames.com (I help run it) and downloaded the client, installing it in the right place.
Two problems:
One, it dosnt remember my controls
Two, after being ingame for 5 secs it says "Reliable channel overflow"
And just quits.
I tried this on other servers, so it is nothing to do with the server I installed.
I am running win xp, on NTL 56k, I live in UK.
I can play ricochet, dmc, dod, cs ect, but I really wish I could connect to my own server.
Please can someone help me!
