Steam: Hmm?

Please give insight!
I have not, as of yet, had the pleasure of using STEAM. Firstly - what does it do exactly- what are the advantages? Is it going to replace the existing system? Is it needed when Combat arrives? PLUS - the million dollar question - will it irritate 56kers like myself?

Please forgive my ignorance - i have been in a coma since the glorious days of NS 1.04 and CS 1.4.

Well, first, yup! It's going to replace the existing Won system; it's main advantage is that it's still going to be around. Won's going byebye some time soon so the move is inevitable =s
As far the general conscensus goes I think you'll definitely need it for 2.1.

    56king? Kinda random on that... some say it's hell, some say it's great and some say they don't notice any difference at all ^^;

Generally the new stuff you'll have to play with is friends lists, a much better server findy thingy, free games like chess, checkers, cards, etc aaand a few other things. Check out the official site at here for more details

Edit: oop, fixed the link sorry =3

    Some short answers.

Steam lets u chat to other people online aswell as auto-updates, in short its everything the HL launcher should of been.

It will replace Won once steam is stable enough.

Not sure if it will be needed for NS combat but i have a feeling it will be.

Its a 300-700 meg download to get it going so yes it will irritate you and me..

    For all other needs

P.S I still say cs 1.3 and ns 1.03 were the best oh those were the good days with auto siege cannons, super JPs, and the feared HMG.

It will be needed for anything Valve (aka Half Life) in the near future...

It has in build friends list, messaging system, server list etc...

It is kinda buggy atm, and if you are on 56k u will have problems seeing as the game with the HL cache is rather large, but once it is downloaded being 56k wont hinder you anymore than it did before...

    LOL!

I dont normally riducule ppl, so I won't make an exception. But has ANYONE ever heard of a program that was to be used by millions of people that did not require constant patching?

After my 500k steam download, then umpteen 60meg downldoads for the other games, (700meg all in one? t away...) it worked ok.

    Then the updates started..

    "Steam is currently patching..."
    ARGGGGGGGGGG

Besdies, it also takes up 2.5* as much hd space as windows ffs... Even someone who's drives go up to k this is still nuts. 3.7 gigs!!! I mean, wow.

Is CS 1.6 really that good? (big-cough*as if any cs game could beat ns* big-cough,) Can't Ns 2.1 be set to work with Valve's WonId system eventually?
    Only time will tell.
(Or maybe some very well informed technical boffin type person.)

No, because Valve is taking down the WON system once they feel that Steam can handle the load and is relatively bug-free.

As for the amount of space it takes up, consider that my (WON) Half-Life directory is taking up 3.44 GB right now. Steam, on the other hand, is taking up 3.16 GB, and that's probably because I removed most of the official mods like TFC, OpFor, etc. There really isn't much of a difference at all.
