They don't pack much punch. Every place said 'multiple chest wounds'. They said he was BLEEDING from the face, but that could've been from a graze... not to mention there's plenty of places in your face you can get shot and survive easilly. A .22 fires soft bullets. They could hit his skull and just ricochet off. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> I concur with what Uranium has stated.
Still, the man was pretty lucky, as .22 caliber rounds can and will kill if they ricochet off bones inside the body, damaging major organs needed to sustain life. Where as a .303 round will punch a hole through you. Just a bit of knowledge gleened from rifle range practice in army cadets.

edit: assuming we're still talking about pistols. please don't mention .50caliber and other near-ordinance ammunition, because you're just beating a dead horse.
at point blank range, the chance is somewhat unlikely that your limb will be taken off. your exit wounds will be larger, of course, than with ball ammunition... but the required breaking of the bone COUPLED with severing of all the muscle in that limb, as i said before, makes it unlikely at exit velocity.
<b>THE VISIBLE BLEEDING</b>, i read, was due to a single neck wound.

you don't need to have the arm completely severed to have it FUBARed.
