I awoke to the familiar grey of the Fawkins (F-aww-ki-ns). It took me a moment to fully wake up from hyper-sleep, my limbs were still stiff from non-use. I slowly got up, only to fall back down again. On my second go I stood up without falling down. I carefully steadied myself and walked down to the briefing room.
Around the familiar oblong table, sat Captain Jakins (Ja-k-ins), Commander Iruy (Ir-eye) and Lieutenant Dalton. I took my seat next to Dalton, still a bit unsteady from the hyper-sleep.
"Alright listen up," commanded Jakins,"we've detected the Outpost Last Hope, we've been hailing them for the past half hour. There have been no replies. We have to assume the worst," said Jakins. Finally, some action! Being on a light Frigate hardly, we've hardly had any fun. "Commander Iruy, you will take Lieutenant Dalton and Lieutenant Notlad to board at this entrance point," continued Jakins. A holographic image popped up in the middle of the table, indicating the Captain's battle plan. "Once there, you will set up a light base and start bringing the grunts over. The Lieutenants shall each take 2 teams, and take different routes to the bridge. Once there, you will check the logs and find out what happened. This Outpost has been doing weapons research, that could turn the tide of this war. You must eliminate any enemy presence if located. Dismissed."
I left my seat and headed towards the door. "Wow, this IS really important. Not another drill," I thought to myself. "I can't make any mistakes."
*****
At the armoury, I gave 2 members of each squad a shotgun. The other 3 of each squad each got a LMG. If there wasn't an enemy presence, then heavy weapons would be a waste. If there was, I'd have to rely on Iruy to back us up. I gave myself Heavy Armour, if i died, my squads would be in disarray, no sense in that happening.
I left to join Dalton at the drop ship. He was also wearing HA, however he also carried a HMG , he obviously assumed the worst and was worried. I climbed into the large dropship, my large armour making heavy sounds as I walked. I sat down on the not-so-comfy seats, my armour digging into my back.
"Take off on my mark. 5. 4. 3." The pilot said through her mic, "2. 1. Mark."
The dropship took off at full speed towards the outpost, "This is it," i thought.
*****
"OK, base secure." Whispered Iruy, a hint of pride in his voice. "Shall i commence transport?"
"Roger that Iruy," I replied. I looked around the quickly built base; 2 turrets, a turret factory, 2 ips (one for each of us Lieutenants, so that we could arrange our squads better), an armoury and the command chair, of course, and an observatory. None of the Marines would be left to guard the base, so we would have to rely on the turrets. They probably wouldn't kill anything, but they'd keep the Kharra away, if there were any, just long enough for us to come back.
The familiar glow of the portals faded, as the marines started coming through. I'd already briefed them on the situation, and they knew what to do. I would take my men the long way, stopping off to look at the science labs to salvage research data, then we would go to the armoury, collecting weapons and armour that might help us. Finally, we would head to the lift, and take it straight to the bridge.
My squads arranged themselves how I had told them, next to the right entrance, in the separate squads. I walked over to them, quickly checking everything was in order.
"Squad one, you will go to the armoury first." I informed them of their separate plans, "Salvage ANYTHING we can use. Weapons, armour, ammo... ANYTHING. If overwhelmed by the enemy, meet back here. Squad two, we will go to the Science Labs, we must gather any scientific data we find. If the enemy IS here, this may be our only chance to gather the data. Alright team, lets move out!"
*****
"Jesus!" Murmured one of the grunts... Callahan or something. "Well, i guess we know why they didn't respond..."
We were at the science labs, Callahan was commenting on the blood-covered walls and the dead scientists with their insides hanging out. Clawed to pieces, I hope I don't die like that.
"Iruy, this is Notlad," I informed the Commander though my mic. "Definite attack by enemy. Please inform other squads to be careful. We will continue our mission and meet up at the bridge in about 10 minutes. Notlad out."
"Roger that Notlad," replied the Commander. "Be careful out there. Iruy out."
"Looks like I'll get the action i wanted then," I thought to myself quietly.
*****
"Look out!" Screamed one of the grunts, "It's behind you!"
The other marine turned around quickly. Infront of him stood the 6 foot tall fade, blood dripping of its gigantic claws. Red blood. Human blood. The fade struck out at the marine infront of him who was frozen in fear. The marine was cut in half, and gun shots rang through the air as the body fell to the floor. Another marine picked up a nearby GL and pumped grenades into the open wounds in the fade, her accuracy enhanced by the adrenaline and nanobots pumping through his body.
All of a sudden, the fade exploded into a million pieces, green sticky blood and limbs sent all over the armoury.
"Notlad! Laura here," shouted the marine through her mic. "We've been attacked by a fade. We managed to kill it and salvage 2 GLs, 4 HMGs and 3 HA, but Ivan and Peter are dead."
"Nice work, equip yourself with the weapons and return to the base," I replied . "We'll see if we can recover the ships log and meet you back there."
*****
"What was that?" One of my squad asked, "Did you just hear something?"
"No, why?" I replied.
"I'm sure i heard a Skulk... must have been my imag..." he replied. He froze in mid sentence as a skulk jumped down on him.
"****!"
I aimed my LMG at the skulk, I couldn't risk firing incase I killed him, but if I didn't shoot now, the others might die. Without warning, the skulk brought his head back and bit off the grunts head. I pulled the trigger. Green and red blood was sprayed everywhere, as the bullets ripped through the Kharra menace and through what was left of the once-proud marine.
"Lets move people!" I ordered and started walking towards the bridge. The rest of the squad followed me, fear showing on their faces. Who could blame them? They'd just seen their team mates head get bit off for **** sake.
I reached the lift, I got in and pressed the button labeled "Bridge". Suddenly, a Onos started charging down the hallway from behind the squad.
"****! MOVE NOW GODDAMNIT!" I screamed towards the squad, "theres a freaking Onos behind you!"
All at once, the marines looked around. The large rhino-like monster stomped, stopping 2 of the marines in their tracks. I brought my gun up to my shoulder and aimed at the beast's forehead, right between it's evil eyes. Just before the hell-ish creature was on top of them, i pulled the trigger and emptyed an entire clip into the things head.
It's head exploded, blood spraying all over the walls and its monstourous body fell to the floor almost instantly. The 2 marines un-froze and sprinted towards the lift. They climbed in and the doors closed behind them as the lift started upwards.
