Remote Compile System

<div class="IPBDescription">what is needed?</div> Heya guys.
Some of you might remember the old "Remote Compile System" Project, were you could upload your maps and have it compiled for you, so you could do other things on your computer.
I'm planning to use my Laptop for this task, so i can use my desktop computer to continue mapping meanwhile or play a bit.

Currently I just installed a complete copy of my HL + NS on the Laptop, copy over all the files that are used (including all the wads, model, sounds, and so on) and compile it, as if I was mapping there.
But this is a rather compilcated way... and takes way too much space on my harddrive.

So my question is:
To sucessfully and completely compile a map on a remote system
- what software is required on the Remote System.
- what files does the "client" need to upload.

Note:
Currently using VHE to map and Batch-Compiler (ZHLT) for compiling.
the remote system is running both Windooze and Linux, so how-tos about compiling on Linux are of course welcome, too.

I always use my dad's computer for compiling, because it takes one tenth of the time it would take on my computer. All you need are the used wad files, the compile programs, and the map file, and I don't think that the sprite files and sound files are necessary.

If you have your laptop and computer networked, you can just send the stuff over. Actually, all of my map files are on my computer, and my dad's computer just grabs them off of the network when I'm mapping or compiling.

I have no clue about how to compile with Linux.

You need to have an server program installed so you can use a sevrer and you ahve to have a domain ip and the rcs system files.. and a working syncronisation between them..

I guess it depends on how well you want to simulate RCS. If all you want is to be able to throw a map on there and compile it's just the compile tools, used wads, and the map file. If you want to truly do RCS it's the requirements muta posted.

If you want to do a complete compile from a map file, you just need the WADs and the RAD file.

If you want to just do the VISing and lighting, the most time-consuming parts of map compilation, you'll need to run HLCSG and HLBSP on the map, and then copy over mapname.BSP, mapname.PRT and mapname.P0, P1, etc for the VISing. Just the BSP (and RAD file) are required for lighting.

Do be aware that your laptop might overheat if you do several hours of processor-intensive work on it; you'll want to make sure it's well-ventilated.

Compiling stuff on Linux is very similar to compiling on Windows. I haven't bothered looking for a recent port of Merl's patched ZHLT for Linux, but it's not really necessary if you've got Wine installed; the tools compiled for Windows work perfectly under that.
