Not giving respect to the classics. That's bad gaming karma.

I think playing those old games is an essential part of being able to play today's games with skill and to appreciate them - after all, (and this is arguable) most games back then were harder than today's.

I'm not sure I could take getting totally owned in Half-life 3, and then hear the voice of some 7 year old kid speak up and mock my gaming skillz.

Only problem with that is that Pong was not the first videogame. Generally there are considered to be two canidates for that honor. The first is "Tennis for Two", a pong like game that used an ocilliscope for display invented by Willy Higinbotham in 1958. However, "Tennis for Two" is generally considered to be a computer game, not a video game, since it didn't use a traditional TV for display. The other canidate is "Chase Game", in which two players chase each other's squares around the screen, invented by Ralph Bear in 1966. Ralph Bear invented the concept of a videogame in 1951 while working at a TV company called Loral, but was unable to impliment it until much later.

actually guys the first game ever was called 'space wars' and was made in a university by some tech students with too much time on their hands and an assortment of other equipment. The graphics were done on an oscilliscope ^^;

Glad to know some knowldege of worth came from that degree of mine =P

edit where I read skulk's post properly: ooh! tennis for two was on an oscilliscope too? =o
We had a module on game history and they said the above.... I'd dig out names and dates but I'm too lazy to find out which one came first though I'll just go my universities information for the heck of it.

Its the machine that goes PING... er.. ok bad monty python reference...

An oscilloscope... oscillates... basically you hook it up to stuff to find whether it is analog or digital and the frequency and such.

you get to use them in physics classes. They're those things that you measure electrical stuff on amongst other things... think of those heartbeat monitors and you're pretty much on the mark. they don't really do graphics as such... just green blips. In the case of a heart line they just move real fast =3

Well it was the first commercial computer game, right? And that's all that seems to matter to most people in the world today...

I get the very strong feeling alot of that was really fake... Notice how everything they said was funny? And that it fits perfectly into the stereo type of what we think people their age would think of these classics? Its clearly an exaggeration at bets of what the kids said. If it is true though (doubt it) I would really like to kick the crap outta those kids, never disrespect your history you little brat!

Mullet, how dare you say pong sucks! That game was the sh*t! Still is to!

Google is your friend.

Oscilliscope

Its either Oscilliscope or Oscilloscope, don't know which is right. Oh, and there are many different types of these, this is just an example.
