Hive locations...

Can any playtesters, devs, or prescient forumites tell me how the randomized hive location thing works? Is it just three areas for the hives on a map, and the hive is just slightly randomized in those small areas? Or is it almost completely random, barring the marine starting area, or somewhere in between?

I would just like a better understanding of how it works (Wouldn't we all...?) if possible, and quietly await the flurry of "STC"s...

There are 3 locations where a hive can be built on each map; these locations never change. The random element is that the aliens spawn with only one hive; which of the three is online at the beginning of the game is random.

Twilight, I recommand reading the FAQs and older posts, alot of your questions can be answered.

I would say that's a sufficently obscure question to warrant being asked on here.

The FAQs are not the godsend answer to all... Us encyclopedias need SOMETHING to do.

I think part of the problem is that most of the faq information is at readyroom.org Most new people, even the smart ones who want to read everything before posting, aren't going to think to go offsite to get basic game info.

Bah, then compile a list of questions rather than making one for each.

The more questions are asked in one post, the less detailed the discussion of each question will be.

I consider the remark "Read the FAQ" more dispensable than a sensible question about the game, especially when the answer for the question at hand is not even found in the FAQ.

'Sides, Twilight was polite and eloquent about it, unlike a lot of new posters. Simple question, clearly asked... I got no problem answering that. (:

I mean come on, he used the word "prescient." How many of you even know what that MEANS?

hmmm this actually raises a question in my mind... How do players new to a map, playing aliens, know where to build new hives. Yes infestation will tip them off to the general location, but wouldn't they need a more accurate method?

Do the aliens have a version of the marine's on screen tips (for things like weldables, breakables, etc.)?

Yes, aliens have tooltips. What they also have, though, is a "ghost" of a hive before it's built - a very see-through render of the model that shows where a new hive can be constructed. STC, but I doubt it. Also, the area in which you can successfully build a hive is pretty forgiving - within 20 or so feet of the actual hive location.

I had read the FAQ at rr.org, and quite a few of the posts. I've been lurking for past few months, as I may have mentioned. If I missed the answer though, I apologize.

As for compiling a list of questions, I figured that a separate thread for each question was warranted, assuming it was a fairly distinct question. Like whoever said it above (Sorry, I forgot who), I also thought that this way the thread would be focused and detailed. If I had posted a list of 5 questions, I assumed I would get a one or two line response for each, if that, which would be fine, but I was hoping for something more in-depth. Besides, I've seen others ask a list of several questions, and they got much less detailed answers, and invariably the thread solidified into a discussion on one of the questions anyway (Well, sometimes it soldified into a discussion on something over the hill and far away, but oh well... ).

I just thought this would work out better, but if I appear to be gunning for posts, or have broken a forum rule, or just seem to be generally annoying someone (JediYoshi?), I'm sorry, and will try to be better in the future.

Thanks for the in-depth answer Coil. Much appreciated!

Yoshi, what have I told you about licking the newbies?!?!

Welcome, Twilight! We recommend searching for an answer before asking to avoid duplicate posts; however, if you can't find an answer on your own, please ask away! (:
