Well, if you want a machine you can be "PROWD" [sic] of, you're gonna need more money. For my next worthy games machine i'm looking at £450 for just the processor and motherboard. Mmmmmmm, 64bit pwnage.

OCuk do a lot of quality merchandise, some of their prices are steep, but some are lower than you'll find elsewhere.

They have like good prices for ASUS cards.

A Radeon 9000 for £35 (Without VAT)? Sign me the hell up!

(What? Its better than the GeForce 2 MX 400 (PCI) thats chugging in this tower at the moment!)

ok around 800 dollars *american* from newegg.com
this is w/out monitor and keyboard/mouse/speakers

a7n8X deluxe motherboard- $119

barton 2500+ processor - $85

corsair twinx pc3200LLPT - 2x 256meg sticks - $150

80 gig HD w/8meg cache - $75

52x cdrw drive - $38

128 meg radeon 9800 pro - $305

400 watt psu- $30* seems cheap but im using it in my current computer w/similar specs works great

el cheapo raidmax case - $22

all numbers rounded up and it comes up to a total of $824.49 w/out shipping
if you needed the other things and had to stay within the budget: i suggest getting the 9600 pro and possibly a cheaper motherboard.

it depends what we can get back from your old computer. That would probably include drives, keyboard+mouse, screen, eventually hard drives and PSU... Most probably the case.

Post your current config?

http://www.ebuyer.co.uk for cheapy computer parts in the UK.

And theres a difference between owning a computer to be proud of, and owning a computer that that forces you to mortgage off your entire family and is out of date in 3 months....

Well, people are surely going to be interested in having a bright blue LCD, 1 Terabyte in HDDs, 4 Gigs of ram, with the ability to copy programs directly in it, and having 4 screen displays.

btw, you say you have a 1.79 Ghz processor. I would think it's a 2200+ ?

from what it seems, you CAN save yourself some money on the processor and keep the mobo/ram/processor to have a better gfx. What type of memory is it? I would think PC3200? Eventually add 256, BUT make sure they are all going to be same speed. If you don't have enough memory slots, you judge if paying for a new stick is worth the 128.

If the motherboard isn't too old, I would think it would still be quite good.
