New Marine Help Thread
First thing first... your playing a game.
I once played Aliens VS Predator LOTS with my friends, i was often the only marine (because i love space marines, die alien scum!) And one comment my friend made (he was a predator, that cheap basturd) after one game is, "Dude, you play scared". While an alien with super high tech equipment (cloaking, Laser cannon) Is something to really fear... That really stuck with me. From then on i never played scared again, it limits you. As fun and atmospheric some of the levels and games you play... your playing a game, dont play scared or else your playing thier game.
Now if you play marines in NS, and find you cant hit the broad side of a onos (which is where the best shots at an onos in 2.0X is) then i recommend you pick up aliens VS predator. It has to be cheap by now, it is an old game (but it looks great!) and is a blast to play (no copyright protection, so set up a LAN game!). Play marines, at the hardest level of difficulty. What this will do is teach you how to aim at fast moving objects, without getting screamed at by your comm "Newbie!". it will teach you to check area's your probubly not used to (above doors, roofs, dark corners). If you want to try learning how to land some grenades on skulks, AvP has a grenade launcher with similer physics as the NS Grenade launcher, so you can practice nailing some drones jumping around with that beast. Also, AvP will get you into saving your shots for when you can actually hit your target. The pulse rifle is a wonderful weapon that leashes out a 4 shot burst insanely fast... when you can burst headshot aliens flying at you, your ready young apprentice.
Well thats all i got right now, someone else take it from here :-P

Only thing that scared me in NS is that i get attacked when im not paying enough attention to the game.
Suprise is the key, and its much more fun at the same time,
Another good game (mod) to teach you how to aim at fast moving objects is Vampire Slayer (www.vsmod.com, it's a Half-Life mod). It's really challenging as a slayer against good vampires who have been playing the mod for a long time.
keep the input flowing guys!
AvP is good, though due to the headshot being god, I find it hard to kill some aliens in NS (step up Mr Fade) since their head isn't really shootable at the moment.
The game is awesome on the XboX, and I'm pretty sure that it is equally good on PC and PS2 (although I pitty you PS2ers - you don't know what you are missing )
i am new here...but does that help?
I pity you GCers as well...

Lies All of it! GC forever! Okay nvm, I should not provoke a console war... As for games that help with shooting at fast objects, yes VS is a great way to do this. I need to get that mod back up and working BTW... It's been too long since I have caused death from the skies.
2)Use weapons you suck with until the com gets mad at you. DON'T go rambo with new weapons, keep them as long as possible so you get more practice
3)Don't armory hump, you will never need 300 rounds of lmg ammo, you will however need a player in a hive or at double res before the aliens have sealed you in your base
4)Don't play scared, Don't play stupid, watch corners, keep an ear out, if you dont know where to go, follow your teamates or ask for a WP, but always keep moving, spawning your usless corpse at an IP costs nothing, the TF the com just build in the hive you died at however costs enough
5)if your com tells you to phase somewhere, do it right away, it means the phasegate is under attack or nearly dead, you do NOT have time to armory hump
6)"kill" in console, learn when to use it, and dont be afraid to use it
7)play as com once before you know what you are doing, just so you can apreciate how difficult it is, and then wait until you understand all the com issues (bonzi base, turret placement, upgrade chain) from outside the chair before you play as com agian
8)ask questions you have, people will be alot more mad at you for doing something stupid then asking something stupid, and you will always get an answer, this isn't CS after all
9)dont get mad at a com until you are positive he is ignoring you, there is alot going on, and you are probably hard to find at the moment
10)a player saying "res here" is imposible to find, ask for health right beside the res node you want to go up
11)as much as possible ignore the lerk sporespamming your base, he will probably not be able to kill any important buildings, so just walk away and let him sporespam all he wants, then all of a sudden, sneek up on him will a JP, see if he likes that
12)the JP does not suck, you just dont know how to use it
thats pretty much all I can think of for now, alot of that stuff is good stuff to know though feel free to critisize my tips in a flame free matter, I dont have any weenies that need cooking.
most important is 11)
please ignore the lerk. if he is spamming the armory i say leave spawn
and go and kill his hive!
here is a great trick for saving guns, called "juggling"
if your with 3 mates and they die, leaving u alone with some shotties and or welders
they will dissapear after 30secs so heres what to do, walk over the shotty and drop yours.
this will pick up shotty 1, then pickup shotty 2, then ... till you swap back to yours.
keep doing it this way the weapons never dissapear and you get X times the ammo before needing to reload.
now when backup arrives the shotties are still there and you saved X0 res.
NB//I have managed to juggle 4hmgs from satcom back to marine start at full speed
after we got rushed. this saves critical res needed for upgrades and another attack.
On the other hand, now there's combat, so it's less an issue.
Yeah, fair enough.
Swiftspear, I have found the need to kill myself in-game once, and then it was at the comm's orders because he needed me back in base as of YESTERDAY. Why would you ever commit suicide without a 'kill' order like that? I think that if you are going to die, bring that Kharra down to hell with you! Is RFK the reason?
"ACK!!! IM STUCK IN TEH WALL, SOME 1 KILLZOR MEH!!!"
type
say "crap, im stuck, 1 sec" then typing kill in consol
i went tfc-->cs-->ns
and now i play all three, depending on my mood and how much time i have. tfc helped me learn to shoot while moving. cs gave me better aim when standing still. ns helped me hit fast moving targets.
i think each game works different parts of your aim more than others, but those improvements help all games. its like different sports work different muscles - a lot of football players play bball for practice for instance.
If you get stuck on a wall or building just type "/stuck" (not in the console, just a message) it relocates you a foot or so away, effectively unsticking you
[Edit]
I would definately recomend playing more than just NS if you want to improve at NS, and computer FPS will help your reaction time (except maby battlefield, which is practically never played as infantry)
I went cs/hl -> NS -> dod
We are talking about skill here. Listening to the commander takes no skill. Teamwork is common sense: if help is needed somewhere you go there. If someone is building you cover them. So on and so forth. That has nothing to do with skill. It's only has to do with how willing you are to partake in teamwork and how much common sense you have.
Teamwork is great. Teamwork is grand. Teamwork is fun. Teamwork is not what this thread is about.
