I Have To Get A Job

Worst. Holiday Season. Ever.
Stupid holidays, I have to go apply for jobs tomarrow so I can get some cash for gifts this Christmas. Last year I just sold my Dark Ages of Camelot character for $100, this year I have no such luck. I swore to myself since I was young I would never work at some McJob, I wanted to be running my own internet based business by 16, not stocking shelves at the local supermarket for 5.50 an hour. Unfortunatly I wasted my time learning web design rather then something useful like... anything else.

Anyone hiring in the Pasco, FL area or have some innovative way to make some cash for Christmas? Or any inspiring stories of how you became a millionaire with nothing but a pile of lint and a Pentium 486?

BTW how much is a kidney going for these days...

give your family and friends the gift of love with a handmade card. your mom will love it, your dad wont care, and your friends will look at you funny. but thats the sort of thing friends do.

Suck it up and bag groceries for minimum wage.

That's what I'm doing, sure does suck, but in the end, I'll have new skis, and everyone else will have presents

Edit: On-topic: eBay.

Find someone who is computer-illiterate and either train them or do a computer upgrade/repair. Last time I installed a 56k modem in someone's computer for my own profit, I spent 1/2 hour at their house and got somewhere upwards of $25 plus the best chocolate milkshake I've ever drank.

what kind of internet business were you hoping to run? im still young, and broke, and have ambitions..!
• TenSixTenSix Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7932Members
I was selling a mix of my own templates and those of an affiliate website. It didn't so much fail as much as there was no reason it could succeed. Template Monster pretty much has the market cornered, and if your going to resell their templates theres no reason somone wouldnt just go to their site.

I want to get into the internet t-shirt business now, but its a serious investment to have quality shirts printed up. It would also cost about $200-300 for advertising through the proper channels. Two of my friends had wanted to get into it too, but it will be years before that happens, one is getting engaged soon and the other is working 16 hour days at a job he hates until his college courses start.

I just find that chicks would be really impressed if they met somone their age that was in web design or something. Plus it would help with their parents when I can say I work doing contract web design or something.

I need job....

*sigh*, only 5 more credit hours and then I can apply for an internship, but the problem with that is some interships don't pay

Let's see, In the four years Ive been out of high school I have been:

1: Cash register/drive thru person for local Exxon
2: 3 days of working 10 hrs a day assembling shelves at some fabrication company
3: General laborer making corrugated cardboard boxes at a box plant (I was special, I got to run a conveyor belt, $10.15 hr whoohoo!!)
4: Replacing tires and stacking tires and throwing away old tires at a local Tire store (But, I was in delivery alot to, delivery jobs are the best!!)

And in between, working on the family farm for a little extra scracth. Ive learned that you can live on $20 a week!

tensix, in no particular order -

: no, girls will just think you are a huge nerd. chicks dont immediately swoon at the mention of a 3 GHz computer with 1 Gig ram and a radeon 9800 pro. no, i cant emphasise this enough. Girls. Do. Not. Work. That. Way. !!!!. No, internet 'girls' do not count. No, im serious. they arent even classified as 'girls', technically.

: haha, i thought you meant an actual business, not just 'web design'. its a dead market for newcomers, dont bother. also, T-shirts... how much does it cost to get a single quality t-shirt printed and shipped? where/who are the different 'people'? im interested, just to crunch some numbers and see if its possible. advertising isnt an issue

: do you have any other business/money-making ideas? ive had a couple, some ethical, some... not. and some down-right stupid haha

also, for all the people who dont understand the need for this, highly intelligent people are usually looking to exchange effort, intelligence, ability, skills, knowledge, etc, into money. not hours into money like some banana eating accountant monkey, turning your life into a minimum wage hour soup mix.

The question is, would you want a girl who just shrugged, if you were upgrading to an Ath64 FX-51?

Bite the bullet, get a job bagging. Depending on where you live and if the store you apply at is union or not, it's actually a much better job than most think... a lot of stores out here start at $8-10/hr, and that's for the baggers. Plus all the union goodies like health plans, retirement plans, and so on.

There is a reason that calling someone a Web Designer will get you punched in almost any bar in the USA.

Seperate stupid people from their money by inventing something cool, worthless, and cheap to make. Those little fluffy balls with feet and eyes glued on are a good example. Same with XBoxes, though those lose money on production, so stay away.

I've found that hibernating works well.

EDIT: Sorry eediot, I didn't intend to sarcastic there.
You need to narrow down your skills alittle. Find something
your really good at (or just good at) and then head for your local
JobCentre. In there you'll be able to speak to an "advisor". Usually they
can bring up local companies with vacancies in your prefered field.

It's not as simple as I make it sound. It's all down to your skill.
For example, I wanted to take of advantage of my fast typing speed.
I thought that i'd be set some stuff to type for the day. I'd finish it
in an hour or 2 and have the rest of the day to relax.... but unfortunately
it doesn't work like that. Stupid huh?
I think the more idea's you have of what type of career you want to persue
then the more the JobCentre can help and provide.

Oh and, you can always try agency work. I did some call centre work
(which DO NOT advise, its hell!) for an Agency called Adecco.
Give em your details, they might ask you to do a typing test or fill
out a few forms. Usually they ring you and say "company [x] has positions
open in the field of [job-x]... do you want to try it?".

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I've been applying for jobs for about 3 months now.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with me that means no employer will ever hire me???

They don't even give me a reason! Just "We are sorry to inform you that you were unsucessful in your job application on this occasion". No explaination, no "sorry, we think you're a retard who is unable to stack shelves".

Most often I just don't get a reply.

I'm beginning to think there's someone else with my name who has a massive criminal record with several counts of attempted killing-everyone-in-the-world.

Or maybe i'm underqualified to stack frigging SHELVES. GAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

Or maybe it's just my really bad handwriting. Of course, I couldn't POSSIBLY be a decent employee with poor handwriting, maybe next application form I should put "Really really bad handwriting" under the "disabilities" section.

I've been working as a Kitchen Porter since I was legally able to work (about 1.5 years now). I don't like it but it gives me money for things. For example my new PC and 1M/bit internet Just do the shelf stacking for a while, it certainly must be better than cleaning thousands of dishes, machinery and pipework. (my work incase you didn't figure that out)

If I was more sociable I would take a job that had tips, you know those curbside airport baggage handlers? $300 a day just from $2 tips. They did the math on it, worked out to something like 18 $2 tips per hour. My father used to be a bardtender, on a slow night he might make $50 in tips, Friday or Saturday nights even more. Can't forget resturant waiters either, at those fancy places they tip in $10s and $20s.

Unfortunatly I hate dealing with people, I'm afraid if I should run into one of those perfectionists who won't give me a tip because their luggage touched the floor I would have assault charges filed against me for throwing their own bags at them.

And the horror stories I hear of people who work at Electronics Boutique, makes me cringe. Heck, one time I went to my local EB just as some angry mother was screaming at the store clerk because her son bought a game she didn't like or something, her kids were crying, she was cursing like mad and yelling.

/me looks for one of these Job Centers

Im looking through these 100's of job listings and feeling even more of an urge to pound my head against the wall. There is 1 job thats way too far from me that would be cool, managing a Game Zone store with 3 plasma TVs and playing all the games as part of your job. Of course, since I don't have my own car it needs to be something local, so goodbye to that!

Commence head smashing in 5... 4... 3...
