Best value for money
Which one?! I wanted a Radeon 9800 (£220ish), but it's looking like I can't afford it... Is it worth the money or should I go for the FX 5600 (£100)?
Yep, the 5600 really sucks balls, don't go near it.
A piddly Ti4200 > than a 5600.
Go the 9800 for sure, or if not a 9700 or even a 9600. They all own the 5600. Check out some benchmarks at tomshardware.com, anandtech.com or hardocp.com if you want confirmation.
Nvidia got screwed over by the foundry on the FX cards.
The foundry gave them specifications on how to design the chips (wire width and such) and Nvidia designed the FX chip using those specs.
Later they found out that the foundry was incorrect with the specs and Nvidia had to redesign the FX chipset. If you are at all familiar with VLSI design. You can just edit something once it is designed. You have to start over (or the chip wont work well).
Nvidia made a good chip that got destroyed by the foundry.
I have a radeon 9600pro 128mb, and can run morrowind with full viewdistance. Anything more then that would be a tad bit of overkill, unless you want to play, say SWG (shudder).
If both support pixel shading (I know both support DX9) I'd say 9600 XT because of the cost. You pay $300 more for the 9800 XT for a slight gain in performance.
haha you know wahts funny? i run the 9800 realtime demos on my 9600se and they run perfect
My advice: the 9600 Pro (must be a pro for the extra pipelines) is an excellent card to get for the the money. Pricewise, I can't see much difference between the 9700 and 9800 pros. So either fork out the mega cash for the 9800 pro, or go for the cheaper 9600 pro. The price of the vanilla 9800 pros should be coming down with the advent of the 9800 XT.
I like Tom's Hardware (www.tomshardware.com) for in depth hardware analysis. This is a good example: http://www20.tomshardware.com/graphic/2003...on_9800-18.html.

Stay away from the Nvidia budget cards.
Seriously.
If you can't afford a 9800 then go for some of the cheaper models, such as the 9600.

The older versions of FX have problems including the famous LOUD FANS! Which is being corrected.
