How Can I Boost Performance?

ShawnDShawnD Join Date: 2002-11-09 Member: 7827Members
My main computer is in the shop so I'm stuck on a P2/GF2Ti for now. This computer just can't play NS at all, in 640x480 in OpenGL the thing only gets like 20fps when I'm runnin around and it drops to like 6 when I start shooting my gun.

Is there anything I can do to seriously improve performance? Maybe something like turn off sprites or reduce lighting quality or something? There must be some way to get this game playable on my current computer.

maybe the tech forum could help you there?

you could try gl_picmip 2 when u start the game, lowers the res of the textures of something :/

How does it work using DirectX? Sometimes some odd setting you have will cause OpenGL to revert to software-rendering mode, which will be horribly slow and the textures will look fuzzier.
Have you installed the latest driver for your graphics card from www.nvidia.com/drivers?
If you still can't get OpenGL performance, try using the DirectX mode instead.

I recently bought a GeForce FX 5900 and NS started running in software rendering mode, making it unplayable. Getting the latest drivers fixed it and now it zips along very nicely in hardware mode.

Heh, one question: are you absolutely sure that you have a geforece2 ti? I wasn't aware that they made them. I think the highest is a Gf2ultra.

A few console commands that might help:
    mp_decals 50
    fps_max 40

It's also advisable to have as few programs running as possible, close everything you can before playing.

The "Ti" is in reference to a Geforce 2 MX Ti200/Ti400 no doubt.

the MX 200 and MX400 were different cards than the GeForce2 Ti.

Back on topic: Are you on steam or won?

I just upgraded to a new computer from one that had 693MHz PIII-M and 8MB integrated gfx. On that I could get (with major tweaking in HL) 30-some fps with nothing going on, 15-17 fps in a fight, say 1 marine vs 2 aliens, but down to about 7-11 fps when lots of models were on screen, turrets or players; this is just so you have something to benchmark from as you make your tweaks...

How fast is this P2 processer you speak of? The LAN where I play has a GF2 Ti and it runs NS just fine, but they got P3 CPUs

im guessing your cpu/ram would be choking. I have a gf2mx400 and get 80-100 fps in 800x600 opengl but i have a 2000XP cpu and 256 of ram....
best changes you could make would be to reduce cpu usage rather than graphics.

You have yet to mention your internet connection, which is a big deal for something like this.
