Big Tech Problem

My new comp!!!
I was playing CS on my computer last night, when it rebooted abruptly. No biggie, comps crash. Except, I couldn't boot into Windows. Now, whenever I reformat it it keeps telling me random files on the XP setup disk are bad, when i used the disk on my brothers machine the night before... The memory passes testing, bios are operable. The hard-disk works fine. Heres the strange part. When I try to swap my brothers hard-disk in to see if I can boot into windows it restarts before reaching the logon screen. I've reformatted it twice and I can't figure this out.

Also please do not post unless you think you can help.

Wait...you use XP too??

I've had that problem and it was because my nVidia drivers went corrupt for some weird reason....and computer keeps rebooting when it is supposed to load the logon screen....related somehow??

As for how I fixed it....I just kept restarting until CHKDSK popped in and found the there was something way wrong, then it starte recovering 'orphaned' files and just got fixed from there....until I found out there weren't any drivers for my friggin videocard....

Just keep restarting until CHKDSK pops in to runs a disk check, mine did.

I had the same problem with my ATI drivers, that solution works like a charm.

Random restarts can be a failing power supply or memory errors. Usually when windows breaks itself enough to require a reboot, it has enough strength left to at least throw up a cryptic error message or two, or at least ding at you.

Plus, the fact that it happens with both your hard drive and your brother's leads me to think that it's definitely not windows or the hard drive. Where/when did you get this system? You may need to RMA one or more parts from it, unfortunately.

And seeing the exact error messages would be pretty helpful too. But DB is definitely on the right track.

use your motherboard, his harddrive and his powersupply
if it works, its your powersupply
if not, its your motherboard
also try plugging your computer into different outlets, check all connections (molex, ribbon etc)

and stick a soviet flag to it, for good luck

Sounds like a hardware problem. To be safe try booting your HD on your brothers computer, if he want's to take the risk Least you would know for sure if it was a software problem or not.

I had a problem like this before, I can't remember it exactly, but XP would not boot up. Im not sure if it was giving me an error message or not, but it turned out that an old CD drive I had hooked up had gone bad or something. I removed it and everything worked fine, never hooked it up again to see if it was just a random problem though.

Could also try unhooking anything not needed during bootup, floppy drives, CD drives, extra HD, soundcard, modem, network card, ect. If you can get to bootup after you remove everything but the bare essentials then you know its a piece of hardware.

Also, hard drive temperature can be a cause for sudden reboots. Make sure your fan is running and that the exhaust vents are clean.

and the soviet flag isnt blocking a vent, while that may result in the 'cool wavy patriotic thingy' its hell for your pc and may result in a burning flag

During the file copy progress for XP, sometimes it will either reboot at random, or throw a BSOD up. Error message in hexidecimal, I'll write it down next time. It always is different.

*Bump*

Update: Using a BRAND NEW Windowsxp disk from a friend (not pirated)
It always fails to copy very exact files the first is dvdplay.exe, regardless of Professiional or Home, it fails to copy. Then when it reaches 70%-90% a LOT of system files fail to copy.

At 100% I was greeted with a BSOD that said "This error was generated to prevent damage to your compter"

Error "IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL" The fact it contains the letters "IRQ" Horrifys me.

I will keep doing the setups untill I get every error possible and write it here. Thanks to all who are trying to help me. Its greatly appreciated

New error at the beginning of setup:

"UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Now, common sense tells me thats my hard-drive. However I can verify my drive to be fine. What-the-crap.

I think your motherboard is shot to hell... CD-drives, power supply, hard drives... there's only one place they all meet...

New error: "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" My ram is also quite Ok. Passes the Bios test.

boot volume on install is the cd drive right?
use all your stuff and his cd drive and his ribbon cables, and use a different power connector to the cd drive

Tried going in to safe mode? F8 to bring up the options just keep taping it during booting it up until the option comes up select safe mode
Sounds like it’s hardware and could be any thing so basically just go through a process of elimination

So to start by remove every thing you don’t need so you got just the bare essentials

Swap power supply

Swap cables as suggested before if same problem then try if possible get a different hard drive and give it a go

You could try Swapping the Ram have only one chip in the motherboard (in case of compatibility problems)

Well good luck in finding out the cause

Alright I should sum this up

-I have it freshly formatted
-Windows cannot complete setup
-Three errors given at random: "MEMORY_MANAGEMENT" "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" and "IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN"
-The system has had no changes. I was contently playing Counter-strike when my computer suddenly rebooted
-When copying files during windows setup the same files refuse to copy. The disk is in perfect condition. I tried two different disks.
-Sometimes It refuses to boot, when it does power on. This is with the 250volt setting on the Powersupply. However when its set to 115 it SOMETIMES powers on, but always boots.
-I want to cry

CWAG: Try this...

Boot your computer from the WinXP CD ROM. Does it give you the option to 'boot to Recovery Console'?

Oh, and is the error hexidecimal with lots of one letter, or is it like 0xc0000 etc.

New problem update: Power plugged in, but will NOT power on.
I set the voltage to 230? I think it is, and it ALWAYS powers on, but never runs the POST. Just sits there. CPU fan spins, as does my geforce's fan

Uh, never mess with that little red switch on the power supply...

Sounds like the motherboard, power supply, or both went out. And, yeah messing with the Voltage switch will mess it up more.

I told him it was his motherboard, RAM, and most likely related to the power supply as well. I *THINK* it might have flash-fried his board and that's why it can't really figure out where his hard drive or RAM is. The IRQL I have no idea, though I've heard of funny errors like that related to graphics.
• CommunistWithAGunCommunistWithAGun Local Propaganda Guy Join Date: 2003-04-30 Member: 15953Members
I have a feeling its only the Power Supply....However I can't be sure. I shouldn't be able to get so far into windows setup if the RAM was dead. Certainly not that far if the board were down

cwag, i feel for you :[ I had a similar problem, and it was my motherboard. I replaced it and things worked fine. This was a while ago so I was using windows98, but overall it sounds very similar. CRAZY errors, reinstall windows, gradually the errors get more and more weird, and then it won't turn on. fans spin, but no video/pc speaker

Your motherboard or RAM maybe not be totally b0rked that they don't work. They just may be broken in one area.
