Why Aren't Custom Maps Played Anymore?

well hardly ever
Before 2.0 we used to see custom maps being played all the time, now that's rare to see. Ok I imagine the answer to this is that there's so many good maps now that we don't need custom maps anymore. But what about those short fun ones like siege and the fall maps? Ok jetpacks made those better, now that jetpacks suck it's hard to do those, so I guess I'd like to ask that isn't there any way that if jetpacks are the problem for these maps... isn't there any way that jetpacks can be restored to they're former 1.04 glory JUST FOR THOSE MAPS. Or maybe have an admin command or something that changes the jetpack settings for a map?

when 2.0x came out, you went ony, or fade, and got stuck ALA the nancey effect
so alot of custom servers droped the maps, until the new versions came out, it took agood 6 months for some of these, look at nobliz, its just been made 2.0x compadabil
so while the customs waited for the custom maps to get fixed, the servers went stock, now if they try to pull a custom up, the server emptys, and as such they now play stock ns - pitty eh
NS ARMSLAB - http://www.nsarmslab.com
AUSNS - http://ausns.org
+ a few german/us servers still play custom ns, look for them

Can't "fun" maps and serious maps all be grouped as custom maps? Seriously though, some of those fun maps do annoy the heck out of me, it's just situational I guess.
When you installed 2.0 it deleted everything you previously had in your ns folder, instead of overwrote(if I may so: WTH who made the stupid decision to delete instead of overwrite?) it.
So I for example lost my 240 custom maps(Not exaggerating.), and I sure as heck CBA to get them all over again.
As steam uses a much more sophisticated system of DL'ing the maps to each client, it will take a fraction of the time.
You just connect to a server with a custom map on it, and in about a minute you will be able to play it. Also, people DL'ing the maps will NOT lag the server I believe.
This is one feature of steam I really like.

Yep. They added a compression function which will hopefully make things transfer faster. I've yet to play any custom maps other than the siege one, because none of the servers I play on (through steam) seems to have them, except maybe BFTG#2, but nobody is ever on that one.

I can safely say, it takes just as long to grab maps from a server as it did in half-life.
It will always be waaayy faster to grab maps from the net and install them.
Siege will not be missed, I hated that map...
stock maps are fun but once in a while customs need to be thrown in to spice it up

Imagine ninjafall. In ns 1.04, all you had to do was to get jetpacks and hmg's to fly high enough, then shoot the hive. Aliens would start with 10 res, some will save for gorge (12 res), the rest will kill for fun (noone is getting res for killing), gorge get the extra res, getting rt's, then start saving for hive.
Now picture the same map in 2.01, all aliens start with 25 res, everyone getting rt's, one kills some marines and gets a hive. Oh, also marines can't use jetpack to get into the hive area, cause it's too weak now.
That sucks.
In siege007, when the door opens, marines already have all the upgrades, all the res they will ever need, and a free clear access to the siege room. Unless marines are all noobs, aliens will always lose.
Most of the custom maps are based on jp's as the funnest thing to research with all the res. Cause it's fun. Now that HA is much more useful, there is no reason to use jp's, therefor the custom maps suck. That's why making a new custom map for 2.01 will also suck, because it isn't fun without the 1.04 features.

Nope, thats only the mods, game files, and such.. custom maps aren't on there.. it still takes forever to dl them off of a server.. IMO we need someone to make a large mappack of all the custom maps, which can be distributed with the ns installer, as an extra option that says that none of these maps are offical, and the maps could suck very much
