    It all just looks a bit washed out. There's little contrast in it at all and the vibrant reds have been replaced with rather pale oranges.

    Also, the skulk in the top left took me a while to recognise, it just looks... wrong, i think that could just be the pose it's in with the head raised.

    If i were you, start over, but use the same structure, but try and keep the colours more vibrant.

    Thank you Esuna, very constructive <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Please clarify something for me, are you talking about the lack of vibrancy in the colors of the eye? or overall?

    The eye is a bit washed out because I had to make the title visible. I suppose I could put the eye to full opacity and enlarge the title. I will remove the skulk. But I know not what to put in its place <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> The marine is concept art from the dev team, and he is standing in mist <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Again thank you for your opinion, please continue sharing it <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Yeah it's mainly the eye that's washed out. But being the centrepiece of the image, it's the thing that notices the most.

    One thing, the logo isn't essential, if anything, replace the Half-Life text at the bottom with the NS logo and try not to let "formalities" stand in the way of the image. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Looks better, imho, but is that the highest res the picture is, the quality looks quite degraded.

    Oh, and on the side, welcome to the forums, i didn't notice. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    thank you, yes I am new.

    The pic you see is not actual size. I use Paint Shop Pro 6, so my original pic is a layered .psp at 800x600. Then I have to cut it up into little chunks to put it in steam <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Hmm, 68 views and only one person replying....
    Does anyone else have an opinion?

    2nd one is very nice. But i cant really feel good about untill i see it at a better quality.

    I also think you forgot to cut out a bit from the backround of the marines pictures next to his forearm.

    I like the border on the first one,

    I like the layout better on the 2nd one,

    The eye and text's colours look better on the 2nd but they're far too blurry.

    Keep it up, I can see it looking very nice <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    thank you cal.

    I liked the border too, but in steam it looks wierd, so I took it out., Btw I updated it, just before you posted <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    <b>Edit:</b> If anyone wants it, let me know and I will upload the resources folder with the functioning backround for steam.

    I think one of the major attractions of the NS eye is being able to see the black middle of it in sharp relief. Staring out of the licking flames .

    Plonking a logo on top doesn't do much for the eeriness. Maybe you could consider making the text smaller and shunting it to the top or top left?

    I liked that upside-down skulk on the top. It looked... right... I don't know what else to call it.

    Keep it evolving!

    Ok, here is the latest manifestation of my menu screen. I stole the skulks from Cory "Squeal Like a Pig" Strader's pic. But I did change them somewhat. And as everyone should know, neither the eye or the marine are my own drawings <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Its 1024x768, which is my in-game resolution. So this is what you see when you open Steam NS. Tell me what you thinketh <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Looks like you've made it at 800 x 600 and then enlarged it to 1024 x 768. It's quite blocky <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I still like the design tough.
  • RohiRohi Join Date: 2003-11-04 Member: 22301Members
    well, for steam to use it you have to make an 800x600 and cut it into peices, then it puts together and you get that.
    I might try and fiddle with it and see if I can make a 1024x768 native. But how is the composition?

    i just tried making an image into a steam background, its v hard. you have t cut each bit up into 256x256 bits apart from the edges, which are smaller, i just found it hard splitting the image. someone shuld make a program that does it for you tbh.

    In Photoshop its easy... you just set up some guides every 256 piexls across your image, then select each part, paste it into a new document, and save as tga with the correct file name. It only takes a couple of minutes max.

    Looks Good, please post a link if you happen to convert the menu for "1024x768" <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    You can't have a Steam manu higher than 800x600, or lower.
    When your resolution (for Steam) is higher than 800x600, the images stretches. Think having an 800x600 image as a desktop wallpaper, using 1280x1024 as resolution, and you stretch that to fill the screen.

    I like the background, by the way <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
