I was playing on a US server once when I commented that a skulk chomping on a TF was being a 'cheeky git' over voicecomms. Cue a burst of laughter and calls for me to repeat the comment.

It happens to me alot that I play on UK servers, of UK clans, and I hear people talk spanish, write in spanish, and I have no idea what they're saying. Most of those servers has the rule of talking only in english. Not that they care.

Which Singapore servers do you play on? Cos I don't know of any on which Cantonese is spoken (Cantonese <i>is</i> one of the major Chinese dialects spoken here, but colloquial Singaporean English is the lingua franca of online gaming). From my experience, Cantonese is only the lingua franca of the Chinese community of certain states in West Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Guangdong (Canton) province in China.
I've only ever played on one of two Texas [HK] servers (the IP of one of them is 64.5.61.160:27016), though I think the Monk's House server is from HK, too.

I don't speak or understand French so I was a bit lost. I asked if it was a French speaking server over global chat and I was told that they spoke both French and English. They welcomed me (graciously) but it was clear they were more comfortable speaking their native tongue. I left after that round. The language barrier is a pretty big disconnect in NS.
However, I often join Brit servers so I can listen to them ramble on (I'm of the opinion they speak to hear themselves more than anything else <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ). Just in case anyone's interested to know: although English is the official language of Singapore and its lingua franca, a large majority of each of the different main ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay and Indian) tend to learn and use their ethnic "mother tongue" as their native- first - language. English is a second laguage to these individuals, and proficiency in it is therefore not as good as those who learn and use English as a first language. Native English speakers are a relative minority, and I am one of them.
I also happen to be a third-year major in English Language at a local university here. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
I think you'd find the same surprising level of proficiency in English among numerous other users of it in countries where it's not the native language. The English language is, after all, the most widely-used language on the planet, and eventually one might expect to find native English speakers almost anywhere.
(This is one long digression. Apologies to those who have not the least bit of interest in linguistics. Heh.)

Those gangster situations usually happen when some retard(in my case,its usually some "vet" with a different wonid and nick...) doing something REALLY stupid,such as say.....refusing to go to the waypoint,or saying things like "the comm is asking us to go XXX.oops did i say that?im a n00b!".Then i start shouting at them,and they start shouting back at me.Classic comments are "slave driver" "why dont you do it yourself" "aiyo kpkb"(kpkb means "complain noisly" in english.The highly ironic part?These people spend the entire time from then on repeatedly complaining that i shouted at them.Thus,they are complaining noisly that others are complaining noisly.Ironic isnt it?)

I find it intriguing the ways languages change online.
For instance I find that the Spanish in typing use 'k' in place of 'qu' in their words, e.g. 'kien' instead of 'quien', 'ke' instead of 'que', etc
I can often understand what they type, I was always great reading comprehensioner (tho I fail English haha) - I find it intriguing. Of course they use voicecomm just as much as anybody and that rapidfire leaves me at a loss.
Some of the non English players have passable phrases in English such as .. **** I forget but he basically said to 'even the teams'

Hey wasted! Im also from singapore, nice to know that there are singaporians who and not total idiots.... My in-game name is [CF]BloodDuck, and im a regular on the Chitown Freeze server (12.107.109.124:27015), come play there some time. My native language is also english though both my parents are Indian, you would be suprised if you knew my age.
EDIT: The server is located in the states and with my Starhub 1.5 mb cable internet connection I usually get 200+ ping though I dont lag.
On dutch servers, we regularly speak english, and if we're speaking dutch we say "bouw die RT" or "ga naar waypoint" or "PGPPGPGPGPGPGGPGPGPG NU!" or "omg 3 hives" or "comm jij nub". Welders, HMG's LMG's, GL's, etc etc, would sound stupid in dutch anyway (although I use korf for hive)
As hard as it is for you, it is hard to understand some accents from other portions of the US itself, let alone Aussie or English accents, and it takes quite some time to get used to it (Some of the people in my clan are from some southern portions of America, and if you don't hear them a lot, they are harder to understand) I have also played on servers where there are german, dutch, or french accents, in my own language, where I simply stood there and blinked. Sometimes, I swear they give up english for their own language, at least until they start yelling it at me over and over, and I can decode it.
Well, if you play on German/Dutch/Finnish servers, there's a big change the players know how to speak english. Also, I don't care if I play on an American or English server. I can speak with an English and American accent.

Strange.... Usually when I jump on German servers everyone is speaking English anyway...
As for accents, having a New Zealand accent is a curse and a blessing all at once... Everyone loves it... Everyone loves to make fun of it... But nobody can bloody understand it... (This applies more in real life than it does ingame, I'm spending a year in Europe, but mostly Portugal)
Any time I try to say any word with an "E" in it, everyone is convinced they heard an "I" instead, and apparently I don't pronounce the letter "L" if it's in the middle of a syllable...

the Spanish servers still say welder
as in, weldearme, or something to that effect.
I find it intriguing the ways languages change online.
For instance I find that the Spanish in typing use 'k' in place of 'qu' in their words, e.g. 'kien' instead of 'quien', 'ke' instead of 'que', etc
I can often understand what they type, I was always great reading comprehensioner (tho I fail English haha) - I find it intriguing. Of course they use voicecomm just as much as anybody and that rapidfire leaves me at a loss.
Some of the non English players have passable phrases in English such as .. **** I forget but he basically said to 'even the teams'

My in-game name is [CF]BloodDuck, and im a regular on the Chitown Freeze server (12.107.109.124:27015), come play there some time. My native language is also english though both my parents are Indian, you would be suprised if you knew my age.
EDIT: The server is located in the states and with my Starhub 1.5 mb cable internet connection I usually get 200+ ping though I dont lag.
Welders, HMG's LMG's, GL's, etc etc, would sound stupid in dutch anyway (although I use korf for hive)
Not that I can tell. The English accent of the two Canadian acquaintances I've met and talked to in person doesn't sound any different from that of what I'd loosely term an East-coast American English accent (it's very difficult to identify an "American" English accent, simply because - as any native American would tell you - accents vary between different states within the federation alone). <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
of course they do. Next time you see a canadian, ask them to say the word "about". They use "eh" a lot as well.
As for accents, having a New Zealand accent is a curse and a blessing all at once... Everyone loves it... Everyone loves to make fun of it... But nobody can bloody understand it... (This applies more in real life than it does ingame, I'm spending a year in Europe, but mostly Portugal)
Any time I try to say any word with an "E" in it, everyone is convinced they heard an "I" instead, and apparently I don't pronounce the letter "L" if it's in the middle of a syllable...

Milk -> Miuk
Ten -> Tin
Heavy -> Hivy
