"Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose
Both truly amazing, life-altering books.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Series)
Hyperion (just the first book)

Yeah, Micheal Crichton has some awsome books!!!
Have a friend who is a Crichton fannatic
Most anything by Tom Clancy.
You want the whole list?
Well,
Frank Herbert: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse: Dune, Destination Void, The Jesus Incident, The Lazarus Effect, The Ascension Factor
Orson Scott Card: Ender's Game, Speaker For The Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind, Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets
Sarah Douglass: The Wayfarer Redemption, Enchanter, StarMan
Anne Rice: The Vampire Chronicles
that's just about 1/4 of my favorite books, but that is enough for now.
Incredibly funny, thoughtfull modern fantasy.
Every book ever written by J. R. R. Tolkien:
Obviously.
Every book ever written by G. K. Chesterton:
I'm guessing most people have never heard of him. He was a contemperorary of Tolkien, and wrote some really odd stuff. Lots of fun, both fiction and non fiction.
C. S. Lewis Space Trilogy:
I'm sort of mixed about other C. S. Lewis stuff(Chronicals of Narnia, etc), but the space trilogy was really great on so many levels.
Most of Tim Powers books:
Really freaky revised history sort of stuff. The scariest part is reading what it's based on in the back, and realising that pretty much all of it could possibly be true, however unlikely. Declare is my favorite so far. Really good spy/mystery novel with bizzare supernatural twists.

And I shall counter with "Stupid White Men" by Micheal Moore. The liberal geek strikes back!
And let's not forget "Radio Free Albemuth" By Phillip K **** (sceince fiction at it's best), and anything ever written by Al Franken or Douglas Adams for great comedies.
Pretty much the greatest book ever written.
Anyone ever heard of Machado de Assis, or Jorge Amado? Maybe this author: Lygia Fagundes Telles

Yes! I'm currently obsessed with Stephen E. Ambrose.
I read Band of Brothers, then The Wild Blue, and I'm in the process of Civilian Soldiers. Such awesome books.
I'd have to say The Wild Blue is my favorite of them all, I loved reading about the B-24 crews.
Go Tolkien! I've already started reading ROTK again
I just hate books, most of them are written in a retarded font and hurt my eyes reading them.
The lack of reading books shows people without culture and intellegence.
Damn that would make such a cool-**** single-player.
Ooo Half-Life 2 mod idea perhaps?
Watching a movie inside your head is so much better than on a silver screen.
My favorite author: Neil Gaiman.
He writes magic long lost.
Fairytale, Neverwhere, Stardust, American Gods (in no particular order) are all good.
The books about Sandman and The Endless are awesome too (However, they are comic books)
Secondary, but no less books fitting my taste quite nicely: Peter F. Hamilton. Any of his books, but especially the Night's Dawn trilogy.
E.E. 'Doc' Smith, Skylark series(Unfortunately I haven't got any of his other books)
DUNE(well obviously)
Philip Pullman - the His Dark Materials trilogy

The blue nowhere-Jeffrey Deaver
Sieze the night- Dean koontz
Tick-tock- Dean koontz
Seconded!
Reading the 5th book now
"Jordan has come to dominate the world Tolkien began to reveal" - The New York Times
Eat your heart out Tolkien fans!
The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R Tolkien
[edit]A girl from another drom says the Narnia books are good, I read one in 4th grade, so I don't remember. [/edit]
Action
Lots of stuff by Tom Clancy
Im Westen Nichts Neues (All Quiet on the Western Front), by Erich Maria Remarque (Stanislaus Katczinsky and his unpronouncable last name own you, -tcz- wth is that? Besides, since it was banned in Hitler's Germany you have to read it)
Science Fiction
Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton
The Lost World, by Michael Crichton
Timeline, by Michael Crichton
Isaac Asimov has good books
The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells
The Invisible Man, by H.G. Wells
War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells (at least, I think that's the title)
The Relic (duel authors, don't remember either name) (high quality suspense and action with a nicely interwoven plot)
I would say Prey, by Michael Crichton but the book wasn't realistic and wasn't as good as his last few books.
Drama
The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Im Westen Nichts Neues also fits here
Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens (except this ones a little weird, and people might not like it)
That's all I can think of at the moment.
Rainbox Six by Tom Clancy
1984 by George Orwell
lots more
