Cheating In Single Player Games...

<div class="IPBDescription">When did this become taboo?</div>Something I've noticed lately is a lot of people seem to be really upset about cheating. And I don't mean the aimbot script kiddie hacks in multiplayer games that we all know and hate, I mean people getting up in arms when people use codes in SINGLE PLAYER games.

When the hell did this happen? What was the turning point?

What's the big deal I say. Sure it may ruin the game for those that cheat. It might make the game end extremely quickly and ruin any chance of replayability, but hey, its SINGLE PLAYER. Nobody loses except the person using the cheat code...

I mean sure, you could always make fun of somebody because they can't go anywhere with IDDQD, but there's also some rather neat things to be found. You'd never find Romero's head without IDSPISPOPD. :P and Impulse 9... Aww yeah...

And SP cheats are built in! They're there already, on everybody's copy. No extra programs, nothing. But still people are like "OMG U USE DNCORNHOLIO U = BANT!"

OMG... I feel like a degenerate for knowing what IDDQD and IDSPISPOD are... holy crap.

...and I don't see the big deal either. After I'm done with a Single Player game, I always look for cheats to make the game more interesting. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast was just more interesting to me with set_force all 9. <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'>

I think there's only about 3 games that i've completed without cheating.... And Half Life aint one of them.

Then again, i don't really play SP games much.

I think it's because the people who played it at the hardest level feel that their 'sacrifice' isn't worth as much knowing someone played (and beat) the game on the easiest setting - or worse, by using a cheat code.

the only game i have played in single player is midnight club 2.

im serisous.. in the last 7 years since i had my p.c.. i have never once played single player...

Thats because single player nowadays is reduced to pure dribble. I played diablo 2 single player for a whole two minutes before quitting and going to multi.

I always beat a game first before using cheat codes. It just spoils the game if you're running around cheating. I mean, if you played System Shock 2 with an ammo cheat on, the game wouldn't be half as atmospheric.

But you're right, DOOManiac, it only spoils the game for the person cheating.

On the other hand, i do cheat on some games, regardless of my first statement. This is usually only games like Tony Hawk or something, and only for multiplayer. It's just not as fun playing HORSE if you have virtually no balance, so we put the cheats on to give full stats.

I cheated on The Bard's Tale using the Bard's Tale 2 disc cheat. My punishment for not knowing what the hell I was doing was ruining the ability to play either game without the cheats <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'>

The only really good Single player games I'v seen lately are ones that don't have mutli, because then they don't just concentrate on trying to make an uber multi-player.

Also I can say I'v never beaten a game an used cheats, except afterwards to see what all extra is in there. <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'>

Ill avoid it if at all possible, but if you cheat at a easy game like FF7 for example... you are one sad person.

Cheating once you beat a game is fine, to test its limits. but using them robs you of the satisfaction of completing a game

i play lots of roms in my pc ,emulators r great
then i ask if there is a item that can only be used at lv 99 and u r already in the last dungeon with lv 40 will u cheat or pass 10 hours playing just to get it ?

I haven't used gameshark, or emulated stuff

I will always play a SP game as far and as hard as I can go, and I usually beat it, then I go rampant with cheats and have fun becuase I know what is up with the game

it's just like masturbating or smoking illegal drugs inside your house, as long as it isn't harming others, why get up in arms about someone elses business...

I avoid cheating all together, I've groaned too much about Scripting in HL multiplayer to ever be any kind of a cheater, I did cheat in Doom and it was kinda cool to see IDDQD again, but I haven’t cheated in any game since then (Well, I did use a money trainer for sim city <2000? forgot which version> but only because I wanted to experiment with certain structures and their influence on economy, so if this negates the argument above feel free to flame away)

Anyhow, I think it you are forgetting one thing if you say it only harms the person who bought the game. I'm sure the guys who spent long hard hours trying to meet a deadline to develop the game don’t want you to breeze through it in 13 seconds. I know that they are the ones who coded the cheats in, but I'm assuming it was only to keep their sanity while doing the same thing for 1000 times.

I ussed to SUCK HARD at video games. But I still loved playing through them, especialy to see the new and nifty things (That is honestly WHY I play games)

So, yah, umm I cheated like a bastd <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>

I would get as far as I could, then get fn fed up with not beinga able to do something and IDDQD, IDCLIP (aw yah, I loved just playing with this for the cool effects back then <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>)

And Often I would then simply turn the cheat back off and continue playing <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>

I Still cheat like a bastd in games, however now it is generaly simply saveing and loading alot (I like playing through stuff perfectly <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'>), especialy to avoide silly things that are just annoying.

I just recently played through SystemShock2, and wasn't down with the entire 'well you triggered an alarm, your basicaly screwed now', So I would reload if I screwed up there.

I Know Alot of people will complain that your 'destroying' the game. Well guess what I just ploped down $$ for this game, and this part of it makes the game NOT FUN, so I cheat <img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'> (I know poeple use this for explaining why they cheat in MP games but thats just silly, then you are ruining the game for others)

IDDQD and IDSPISPOPD, as well as IDBEHOLD, have been ENGRAVED IN MY MIND FOREVER!! As well as [R2, R2, L1, R2, Left, Down, Right, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up] for a more recent game.

Cheating is OK as long as YOUR ok with it. I prefer to beat the game on my own accord and then cheat afterwards, because cheating really does ruin the experience if you use it the first time through.

I remember the second Ecco the dolphin game for the genesis, when he travelled through time...?
In any case, since that game was friggin impossible to beat, I think I cheated a couple times.
Interesting thing, I got an ending that was different from the official one since I used cheats (it showed a sky scene with stars and scrolling text, I forget exactly what it said, but basically it said "you screwed earth cause you cheated you stupid piece of tuna"). Back then, I thought Ecco had great atmosphere - excellent graphics and music (the medusa thing gave me nightmares).
Point is, I thought it neat that whether the player chose to cheat or not could affect the story.

IDSPISPOPD? Uhh....I don't think i ever knew that one - I always used IDKFA.

IDDQD was a favorite, though. Funny thing IS that the only way I ever BEAT Doom was by shooting Romero's head...or i THINK that beat the game. I use cheats, but only when a game has become so impossibly hard that playing it becomes so unenjoyable.

However games that don't rank the difficulty up suddenly don't get cheated on.
