Movement Issues With Ns Through Steam

First off, I'd like to admit that this is NOT an NS-specific tech problem, but rather is either Steam or HalfLife that's causing the problem. The reason I used this forum to ask my question is because I've found the NS community to be the least volatile and the most likely to actually THINK before they post a response. If no one here can help me figure out what's wrong, I will, of course, suffer the 'right' avenues for tech support, but I thought I'd give it a shot here.

THE SHORT VERSION!
I can't move properly in any HL-based game, when launched through STEAM. Any move-bind key (+forward etc) moves in the correct direction at speeds only rivaled by a dead snail. It works fine if I try running HL 1.1.1.0 via hl.exe.

THE LONG VERSION!
Four days ago, I finally upgraded to WindowsXP. When playing on Windows98, my previous OS, Natural Selection performed perfectly, as did HalfLife and every other mod I downloaded. Aside from a brief spat with Steam not wanting to run, which I ironed out after much effort on the Steampowered forums (which terrify me to no end, I might add), I was running the most recent versions of HalfLife, Counterstrike, and Natural Selection through steam, with few complaints. However, I've now upgraded, and all that's changed.

I install HalfLife from my Game of the Year Edition package. I then run the Steam_CS Installer, which runs cleanly. I pop into Steam (after the annoying 3-minute load time), and update HalfLife. I run the packaged "Install NS directly into steam" file I found on these forums (ns-v20steambeta.exe), and wait through the 3-minute load again. During this wait, I hopped into my Sierra/Halflife directory and ran uninstall, just to clean up some diskspace and to pass the time. I hop out onto the serverlists, find a promising server (since I forgot to save my Favorites list during my upgrade to XP), and everything loads fine. Whoops.. I forgot to adjust my resolution, and controls. I figure I can deal with some 640x480 action if it means gore sooner, so I console the most important parts of my controls in, and then get ready to roll!

I hold down forward, and begin to crawl. This is the movement speed of a webbed marine, here. Momentarily confused, I hit a couple buttons at random. I speed up, and figure it was just some kinda lag spike. Then I tried to change directions, to select a random team.. and I'm crawling again. I stop, and fiddled around in the readyroom a bit. Every time I press a key that IS bound to a movement command (+forward, +moveleft, etc) I move at a crawl. If I press anything not bound to a move key (I tested unbound keys and +jump) I return to normal speed, until I press another move key.

This is weird, and will make gaming impossible.. a skulk can't catch marines at that speed, and a marine that slow will be easy meat unless I've got some REAL nice backup. I guessed at this point that uninstalling my Halflife directory was a bad idea. However, I figure maybe there's something wrong with my NS install (I'd read that the .exe file I used is sometimes buggy, and isn't supported). I jump into a CS server, just to get in some killing before I go back through the whole uninstall/reinstall process.

Ok, uninstall time. I run Uninstall on steam. I delete the Steam folder. I go into my registry and delete everything in the Steam section. I then run Steam_CS install again. It boots up, all clean and pretty again. See above for steps, because I did the EXACT same things, with the sole exception of leaving Sierra/Halflife intact. I hop into an empty NS server, just to see if things work. Same problem, same tests, same results.

Alright, this is getting wierd. I'd not heard of anything like this before. So, I decide to try a couple things. (non-steam, through the Sierra/Halflife/hl.exe) I hop into the Hazard course, and it works. Note: This is HalfLife, straight from the package of Game of the Year Edition.

I then go download the updates from FileShack, my server of choice, to get NS v2.0 and HalfLife patch 1.1.1.0. I install the HL patch, and NS v2.0. I jump into the hazard course after patching HL, while the NS finishes downloading. Works just fine. I go online, but could never manage to get a server to properly WON Auth. This is probably because of my firewall and settings, and I don't think it's overly important since WON will be going down shortly, anyway. If it becomes important, however, I will fiddle with the firewall to see if I can get it to work.

As a final check, to see if anything I had done might have somehow accidentally and by freak accident fixed anything, I tried another fresh install through Steam... and was met with "This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time." So.. I'll try again at another time. Just thought I'd ask this to see if anybody else has had these problems.

I'm running no scripts or hacks, and have only Steam listed in my running Apps list. The only Processes XP reports as running are System-launched or Steam related, with the sole exception of my ATI2evxx.exe process, which I'm under the impression is in some way related to my Radeon drivers.

System specs:
1.1gig AMD Athlon
512MB RAM
SB Live! (other information unknown.. I picked it up from a friend for a quarter)
Radeon 9600 (Pro?), 256 MB.
WindowsXP Pro
The error was non-graphical, so I didn't try any other resolutions or graphics mode. (Defaults to software 640x480, I believe)
This is all run off of HalfLife Game of the Year Edition with downloaded mods.

(My Radeon's packaging said "pro", however, all the various hardware detection programs I've run since then only report "9600 Radeon Series", so I may have been jipped. I bought it online via a site I found on PriceWatch.)

If anybody's ever experienced this problem, advice would be much appreciated. If there are any other tests anyone would like me to run, I'll gladly do so. As far as my limited techie diagnosis can tell, it may be a config error related to Steam. I don't know enough about configs, or steam for that matter, to figure out what, precisely, is wrong.

Uh. All I can say is, make sure first to upgrade all your hardware drivers wherever possible - but primarily your VIA-4-in-1's, your sound and your gfx and your mouse drivers. Using any special kind of keyboard software? Update that as well or disable it. XP contains rather old drivers by now.

Secondly, try different version of the ATi Catalyst drivers to see. Half-Life can be a fickle woman at times.
Thirdly, apply all the WIndows Update patches you can find. Just try.

Strange problem you got there. I suspect XP and some piece of hardware of yours don't dance too well together.

I went in and disabled my Multimedia Keyboard's hotkey list, and gave Steam another try after the fresh install I did before making that post. In the single game I successefully joined before Steam crapped out on me, I COULD move normally.. so I'm thinking it's just the multimedia keyboard didn't work with Steam. I only use 3 of the 27 extra buttons, and the newest drivers for the keyboard disabled re-mapping anyway, so I'll just remove that from my auto-launch list. I *think* things work now. I find it rather odd that the keyboard worked fine without Steam, though..

Thanks for the brain-jog, Immacolata. Hopefully everything else will work just fine, now.

It can be due to some reasons, i think these:

a)radeon 9600 series mean any type of radeon 9600 (probably most likely)
b)i heard that Sapphire was making normal PROs ans some kind of halfPROs, the second ones were tacted lower so if you have Sapphire check the clock speeds.
c)You have 256MB version, 128MB version runs at 400/600(300DDR)Mhz, versions of cards with more memory usually have the memory on lower clock speed so the detection program thinks its non pro version.

If your 'detection program' cannot detect clock speed download rage3dtweak from www.rage3d.com (it wiill display it in overclocking tab)

    weeeeeeeeeee

I am WAY to lazy to read through that right now <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> (good post though)

    solution:
    XPSP1
RUN WINDOWS UPDATER!!!!!!! (you should do this every few eeks anyway, its good for you!)

    Other posible one:
remove your Config.cfg (just del it) and then try to play....

Glad to hear. A lot of socalled "multimedia keyboards" have really dodgy software. It was probably not written for XP <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Now when i see you have a Radeon card i remember one thing, the newer Catalysts drivers (from about 3.4 or so) have some thingy that checks for some key shorcuts to increase gamma or such things, i had problems with this in HL because it blocked some of the keys and also what is most important:

It caused my movement to slow down because i had the "run" (or more exactly not run) button set on shift and it messed with it somewhat so when i pressed forward it was ok, but when i pressed forward + left/right it engaged the walk mode somehow which was there until i pressed shift which returned it to normal state again until i tried to strafe again.

What worked for me was disabling that software, its in the contorl panel something like 'allow the ATI taskbar application' or such. NOT just the SHOW the ATI tasbar app.

If you have vertical sync turned off and you are getting >200 fps(this is useless by the way, your monitor cannot display all this information as it is working at 60-160 Hz refresh rate) then your movement will be slowed down for some reason according to some people on the steam forums, set fps_max <your refresh rate> or turn on vertical sync or something.
