Windows XP Networking Troubles
I'm not normally the one to ask on forums about my technical issues, but the web and IRC have turned up blank, and I have a feeling some of you (Monse for instance ) will know the answer to my query and be able to sort something out.
I just bought a new laptop. Windows XP Home, currently sitting next to my other Windows XP home PC, connected by a switch. Now the problem is, I would like to be able to access my hard drives on the PC from my laptop, and vice versa, but (and heres the tricky bit) without sharing the whole of both computers with the rest of my family who also have computers connected to the network (because I dont trust my sister not to accidently delete all my files ). Windows File sharing and setting up a network location have pulled blanks so far on being able to limit access, but there must be a way. Any help would be gladly appreciated.
(Anyone mentioning Linux as a solution is more than welcome to come to my house, make my laptop dual boot, then set up both the Windows AND the Linux on the laptop to connect perfectly, then find some software which works on Linux which could possibly be construed as being useful )

Anyway, do you have dynamic IP broadband? I know that can screw with your networks (If I even halfway understand the problem)
Okay, go to your computer, right click on the drive you want to share, go to 'sharing' and share it. This will only share that drive with your network.
EDIT: I know in windows 98 you could also share individual folders as well, I believe, by doing the same thing with the folder.
EDIT 2: Yes, confirmed, you can share individual folders. That will make 'em show up on your network, and ONLY that folder in that drive.

I quite like Macs. You are forgiven.
Sharing the folder would share it with the rest of the network, which I dont want to do, I only want to share it with one computer. And making the folder private would mean that the other computer couldnt see it.

Oh okay... I see what you mean.
I believe you can set network permissions... gimmie a sec...
A networking haxor friend of mine figured out a solution - some stuff to put in your run prompt. If you put the correct command line in, you can access any drive from any specific computer. Of course it's slow as hell, but getting files from one computer to the other is as simple as copy + paste.
To be honest, I can't remember the exact command to input. Would this possibly be helpful? If so, I can get hit him up for the right answer.
Thanks for the offer Dubb, but I'd rather get it working properly.
Go to Start-Control Panel-Folder Options and uncheck (at the bottom) 'simple file sharing'.
Now go to the folder you want to share and right-click on it, go to 'sharing and security'. Now in there, you can set 'permissions'.
Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to do that yet... but gimmie a few more minutes.
Okay now in there, click 'everyone' and 'remove'.
Then I clicked 'add' and it wants to add an object, or, who I set permissions for.
I set 'object' to 'CYBORG' (My computer name) and then 'Dave Schutz' (Firstname lastname) and it accepted it. Tinker around in there, that's what you want
Unfortunately I couldn't verify if it actually had permissions set right, becuase my network itself doesn't work.
Oy... I hope this isn't a feature exclusive to WinXP Pro then...
Oh, it's under the 'View' tab, sorry about that.
Well LB is reading this.. and he knows more about networks and servers then I do.
Gah, that means I am going to have to spend bloody ages downloading it from Microsoft.

So wait, was there an option for simple file sharing under the 'view' tab in Folder Options, or not?
*shakes fist* Damn you, Microsoft!
Ouch.
Okay... so it is exclusive to Pro... sucks.
Now we have to do this the harder way.
Try this one Fam:
Go to Start-Run- and run: SHRPUBW
Should give you a funny dialog box, fairly simple to understand. Browse for the folder you want to share. Give it a name, click next.
Now in the next dialog, click 'customize share and file permissions'. Now it brings you to the dialog I was mentioning earlier.
Just think, that 'feature' to just click 'simple sharing' costs an extra $120...
I wanna know if it worked...
