Harddrive problem
For some reason late one night, a ton of files, with the icon of that one envolope of that one e-mailing program, were packed into every file I have. Apparently I've lost 500megs or so, and now I'm down to around 5. There are about two in every file and they keep mulitplying. That and every 5seconds or so it acts like I download a file and it comes up with the window that says what would I like to open it with? This is really annyoing, actually I haven't booted up my computer since then, but I'll see whats up now. Can anyone have any help?

And the files that keep downloading are ".tmp"s. And I don't think I can 1)Erase all the files 2)Erase them while I have to hit cancel every 3-4seconds after I do something.
Example of filename that downloads every couple of seconds: "wbk##.tmp"
[edit] The .tmp files are created by programs to be used thile they are running, and then should be automatically deleted afterwards. Word is a perfect example of a program that creates temporary working files. Where are the .tmp file being created? What's creating them? [/edit]
[edit2] Oh, they are being downloaded? If you have a firewall I would say reset all of your rules for incomming/outgoing traffic and see what comes up when your computer tries to download the files. It sounds like some kind of virus to me. [/edit2]
Yeah, I had to move it to another room. And then I booted(tottally without the internet) up and ran for 30minites or so perfectly, then it started to happen.
It is(was) called Black D. It is a PPV (Progressive Payload Virus). On the variant that I had, It did nothing for 2 weeks, then it would start to fill my hard-drive with blank notepad files. Then It would start to ecxecute itself to make my comp refuse to start up. After exactly one month, It begins to delete your Hard-Drive. The version I got...
A)Wrote itself to the boot sector of any floppy inserted.
B) Corrupted Startup Discs
C) Hid in the Recycle Bin (Make sure your virus scanner looks there)
D) Replicates itself everytime you use rundll32 (any windos based app, like the device manager).
I had to format the ###### off.

As usual, this propogates using outlook address lists.
And it only downloads right when I start to do stuff.
My family switched away from it a week ago, I'm trying to get all my friends to do so as well.
Everything re-installed that I erased. Once again going down to a meg.

If its not too late, then download The Cleaner, install it, and check your HD/clean it. It sounds like your HD is too far gone now anyway, though. Bummer? You should be more careful when using your computer; you sound almost as bad as my Dad.
/me runs virus scan
/me finds 4 trojans
/me realizes they are minor worries
/me cleans them off
Na, it's too late. Everythings gone, like all my programs. But I can still back up important stuff like game files so, I shall do that sometime soon. But whats a computer without MS Paint?
/me licks Merkaba
That's the program Windoze uses to read direct library link files. When you reinstall Windows (which I strongly reccommend...be sure to back up anything not an executable!, do a search for *.dll files. Lots of stuff. Windows needs that. Back up your hard drive quickly, now, you have little time left before your computer fails to work.
Why do people make these malicious worms? Does it make them feel good?

Choice two: use a boot disk to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows.
If you can keep from getting too clicky, go with choice one. As long as you don't execute any files on the drive (copy only...don't run any programs, of course), you should be safe. If you feel as though you just can't restrain yourself, go with choice 2.
Sorry this happened to you. Again I ask, why are some people so destructive?

Get a firewall, a good virus scanner, and remember to check your computer almost monthly for virus and trojans.
