For some reason late one night, a ton of files, with the icon of that one envolope of that one e-mailing program, were packed into every file I have. Apparently I've lost 500megs or so, and now I'm down to around 5. There are about two in every file and they keep mulitplying. That and every 5seconds or so it acts like I download a file and it comes up with the window that says what would I like to open it with? This is really annyoing, actually I haven't booted up my computer since then, but I'll see whats up now. Can anyone have any help?

It sounds just like a virus. Sorry, without more information I cannot figure out exactly what it is, and as I have never had a virus on my computer (that I know of), I cannot offer much more in the way of advice)

Couldn't be, I was offline before it started to happen.

And the files that keep downloading are ".tmp"s. And I don't think I can 1)Erase all the files 2)Erase them while I have to hit cancel every 3-4seconds after I do something.

Example of filename that downloads every couple of seconds: "wbk##.tmp"

You were never online with this computer before it started happening? You might have unknowingly downloaded something harmful a while ago and it just now activated. Perhaps a Trojan horse. Do you have a virus scanner? Try running that.

[edit] The .tmp files are created by programs to be used thile they are running, and then should be automatically deleted afterwards. Word is a perfect example of a program that creates temporary working files. Where are the .tmp file being created? What's creating them? [/edit]

[edit2] Oh, they are being downloaded? If you have a firewall I would say reset all of your rules for incomming/outgoing traffic and see what comes up when your computer tries to download the files. It sounds like some kind of virus to me. [/edit2]

Yeah, I had to move it to another room. And then I booted(tottally without the internet) up and ran for 30minites or so perfectly, then it started to happen.

I had a variation of this Virus
It is(was) called Black D. It is a PPV (Progressive Payload Virus). On the variant that I had, It did nothing for 2 weeks, then it would start to fill my hard-drive with blank notepad files. Then It would start to ecxecute itself to make my comp refuse to start up. After exactly one month, It begins to delete your Hard-Drive. The version I got...

A)Wrote itself to the boot sector of any floppy inserted.

B) Corrupted Startup Discs

C) Hid in the Recycle Bin (Make sure your virus scanner looks there)

D) Replicates itself everytime you use rundll32 (any windos based app, like the device manager).

I had to format the ###### off.

WARNING! THIS SPREADS THROUGH LAN! IT INFECTED MY COMP FIRST THEN SPREAD TO MY FATHERS! ALL NETWORKS, NOT JUST CAT5!

As usual, this propogates using outlook address lists.

Hmm, literally all I did was try to open a ".rule" file with internet explorer. Then it started.

And it only downloads right when I start to do stuff.

I think it's fairly important, in fact my dad just confirmed that it is VERY important, it runs chunks of codes for certain programs (specificly dll files) which means that many things won't work. I (and my dad) recomend that you reformatt this machine, that'll also make sure you've got that virus nuked. You could probably back up any documents if it has any.

If its not too late, then download The Cleaner, install it, and check your HD/clean it. It sounds like your HD is too far gone now anyway, though. Bummer? You should be more careful when using your computer; you sound almost as bad as my Dad.

That's the program Windoze uses to read direct library link files. When you reinstall Windows (which I strongly reccommend...be sure to back up anything not an executable&#33, do a search for *.dll files. Lots of stuff. Windows needs that. Back up your hard drive quickly, now, you have little time left before your computer fails to work.

Why do people make these malicious worms? Does it make them feel good?

You are now at a crossroads, my friend. Choice one: hook your hard drive up to another computer, and retrieve any data you need backed up. Only the data, my friend. Not a single *.exe file in the bunch. Or *.rule, for that matter. Use a boot disk to reformat, and reinstall your Operating System.

Choice two: use a boot disk to reformat the drive and reinstall Windows.

If you can keep from getting too clicky, go with choice one. As long as you don't execute any files on the drive (copy only...don't run any programs, of course), you should be safe. If you feel as though you just can't restrain yourself, go with choice 2.

Sorry this happened to you. Again I ask, why are some people so destructive?

-Ryan!

Reformat, you dont really have that much of a choice and its the safest way out. Ive had virii before, the best thing to do is format your HD, back up any iles you REALLY need to keep, otherwise youre just running the risk that those files are infested and have to go through the whole problem again.

Get a firewall, a good virus scanner, and remember to check your computer almost monthly for virus and trojans.

I hate virii...
