Problem with the forums

<div class="IPBDescription">Technical problem, that is</div>I'd like to post this in Off-Topic, but recently the forums tend to stop loading around the artwork forums for me. Topics are often only loading up to answer # 8 or so, and to post this thread, I had to switch from Opera to IE (argh) because the word processing applet refused to show up.

Is this only happening to me or have others the same problem?

Odd. What version of IE are you running (the exact version listed in the help | about)?

I'm not using IE but the US version of Opera 6.04 (Build 1135, Win 2K, Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.3).

Nemesis, I'm getting the same problem.  My Opera is identifying itself as MSIE 5.0.  Should we change that?

You mean there are people out there that don't just use plain, simple internet explorer? Odd...

Well I use the IE version 6.0.26 | Updateversion: 316059
and Windows XP professional version 2002. The problem occured only during a short period of time.

Oh, I are an idiot. I somehow read that you had problems with IE, not Opera.

Yeah, like the Doctor replies when a patient says 'It hurts when I do this'... 'So don't do that'.

And I don't want to hear some big uninformed complaints about IE here. This board and it's server are 100% Linux-powered, so it's not some Microsoft thing. Except that IE works, naturally...

Do you have the problem with Mozilla or any other browsers? I hate to depress all you you freethinkers out there, but Opera HTML standards compatibility is not good. IE and Mozilla are nearly 100% compliant.

    Yea.
Why would someone want to keep intrusive cookies, hackers, and spyware away? <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

I tried switching the identifying. I couldn't connect Microsoft sites anymore, but aside from that, it didn't improve anything :/

Funny thing is that everything worked just fine up till now ...

Well, I'll try and D/L Mozilla, although it'd hurt pretty bad to give up on Opera...

The only other thing I can suggest is to clear your Opera cookie and file caches and login cleanly. Just to make sure you are not hung up somewhere.

Opera has an option to clean <i>all</i> cookies when being shut down, and I'm never storing log in information.

Well, this is my first post from Mozilla, and I guess I'll get comfy with it - still, if you found the bug, I wouldn't be unhappy.

I'm afraid that there have not been any changes to our software or forums in quite some time. The problem is most likely with your browser config or the browser itself.

Do you clear your file cache as well at shutdown?
  • Nemesis_ZeroNemesis_Zero Old European Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 75Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
    Tried that, too :/

Thanks for your effort, but I guess it'll be easiest to simply paralleltask with Opera and Mozilla.

It's not likely that the problem is caused by his configuration; I've been using Opera (6.05) all the time without problems, and today I experienced the very same problem Nemesis described.

It could be our ISP however; I believe we're using the same one.

Oh, and all M$ propaganda/hate aside... I use Opera because it is the superior browser. IE is awkward, and just... horrible.

    edit:
Could you name one W3C standard IE complies with but Opera doesn't, please?
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
Well, I can do a bit of clean and flush maintenance on the forums in a bit to make sure they are working ok. This result in a short (2 minute) outage.

As for compliance, W3C is one set of standards, and Opera meets them all. It does not however completely cover some of the other non-W3C industry standards for CSS, XML, Javascript, DOM and other aspects. I misspoke about HTML, and you can say neener. Mozilla 1.1 is the only browser that covers them all right now, mostly because it is the newest release of all three. Opera also does not always properly render a lot of IE-optimized webpages, even though Mozilla does (a key issue, considering how many pages are designed for IE browser compatibility first and everything else second). It's biggest claim is that it's the fastest page renderer of the the three browsers, which is a good thing of course.

If I had to recommend between the 2 non-MS browsers, I'd say go with Mozilla 1.1. But I recommend using IE 5.5SP2 or perhaps 6.x over both of those.

The forum and DB had had a couple maintenance routines run and were bounced. Opera users: please let me know if you are still having issues seeing portions of the boards, and provide (small) screenshots as well if possible.

    Neener.

"Optimized for IE" is an euphemism for "Too lazy to conform to the accepted standards". Fortunately these incompatible pages are usually not worth viewing in the first place.

Anyway, the page loading errors have disappeared for now.

So it was not working for you this morning and it's working fine now?

I like how you casually breezed over the other issues I brought up. I allowed you to neener me, so I will now neener you. Neener.

Basically, yes, except that it's not morning here but the middle of the night, which is also the reason why I didn't enter a full off-topic "M$ vs. Freedom" debate.

Coolness. You're welcome, by the way.

And take that sort of boring conversation to the crudbrains of the Slashdot forums - they will love you for it.

    I still had a problem - don't worry, though...F5 fixes it.

Sorry for resurrecting this topic, but I just tried to simply reset all Opera configs and then loaded the forums again - still the same problem.

Seeing how nobody else encounters these problems, it's official - it's my PC.
