So You Want To Be A Commander?

Let me start of by saying that about a year ago, I hopped into the command chair and the marine team lost. Since then, I have studied and practiced the art of commanding. Here are my tips for those who would get in the cc.

1. Act like you know what you are doing.

Do not, under any circumstances, give your team the impression that you do not know how to play. Even if you do not know how to command, act like you do. Without confidence in their leader, the Marines will not obey your waypoints. The Marines will figure that they know where they are needed and rambo off there alone. You will not be able to complete any of your objectives because your team does not believe in your ability to command.

2. Positive reinforcement

For everytime you scold one of your marines for doing something unintelligent you must also give out two compliments to Marines that managed to achieve something above-average. Examples of this are: Killing two+ enemies in a row or defending that important point against the odds.

If you yell at your marines for being useless in not being able to kill one skulk then the next time they go out they will surely get owned by the same skulk. If you tell your marines that they are the best and that they can get the job done then you would be surprised at what they can accomplish.

3. Squads

The squad system was implemented into NS for a reason. I do not see it get used often enough on pubs. When marines hear that they are in a squad their level of confidence in the commander increases because they can tell the commander at least knows something about commanding.

4. Keep them busy.

The longer a marine is left without an objective, the greater the chance is that they will feel that they would be useful somewhere else. This will inevitably lead to ramboing and the loss of an important point that you wanted guarded.

advice to new coms, yes its true rambos are anoying and they might look like there not doing what you ask but infact there thinking ahead, now if you want ll your marines to head to a hive and one marine goues off in the oposite way your asking why is that rambo doing that? he is making sure you dont fail competely, as when your squad of marines are being wiped out , he is single handedly setting up a new front line, at the ther side of the map, and you wil lfind that he will probebly have cleaned out a hive for you ready for you to make it more secure. Now why to rambos do this and why are they so good at it? Rambos are an offshoot of the NS 1.0 vetrins, instead of becoming good commanders(like your trying to be) or a great squad leader (the marine first in to battle and the last one standing) they have become in words a aliens worst nightmare, a single marine talking on anything up to a fade single handedl, and give him a JP and heavy mgun an anti onos weapon, Hes fighting his own war and is most cases is winning it, he will keep a hive under a single man lockdown and when your marines move in to take it they will liktely see a marine croching in an easy to defend courner scanning the hive for any movment. Now as you see rambos are not a bad thing if you have limit funds consider giving him thw e big guns, the rest of the marines seeing this will take him as a natural leader and follow him to were ever he may go. The leason is if your a noobie com find the diffrence between a bad rambo and a good one this is very easy as thel be lots of fargs going down the screen in his name if good.

the best advice i can give to any com?
    1. buy a mic, if you dont have a mic most ppl wont think ur serious.

    2. talk to your men, they need to know whats going on
eg. your asking ppl to wait at a res point, if u just give em a waypoint
no doubt they will move of after no time. tell them your waiting for res
to elec or res for pg or u just want them their to defend it ur chances of
getting them to stay dramatically increase.

    3. Get some squad leaders. No doubt playing on pubs you will see really
random N00bs and "elite" vets. Tell ur vets to keep the group of ha's together.
he can boss them around while u do other stuff.

    4. Be careful who you kit. (kitting is giving someone a
whole set of upg. ie jp/hmg/mines) If you kit a noob your might as well put 40 res
in the crapper. He will fly into the nearest set of ot's and die. if u kit a vet he might
single handedly take down a hive!!!

    5. protect ur base. its soooo embarassing when you see a marine team with 6 res points,
a ha train a mile long and no spawn! why? because their is no base protection. If you join a
clan, you will learn the true value of mines. If you send your men out, leave mines to stay.
Yesterday our clan war we took out 5 fades with lmgs and mines and that turned the game around.

    6. Keep your men alive. A little medspam to save a ha/jp is worth it because you are saving the 40 res for the
kit + you keep the faith of your men that you are watching from above.

Yes, all the stuff above is absolutely true... if you give me a jp/shotty, you can scratch 1 hive... you let me res **** for onos, and you can call the game.. sometimes a rombo/res hog is actually a good thing... while in other cases its not. just make sure you know who they are b4 you let them do what they do..

    - and another thing.. if your going to comm... constantly encourage your teammates... "gj's and wtg's" work fine, but if you have a mic, for every good thing they do congrat them on it, it will keep there moral high and make them feel like they are truely needed, and who knows they could take that extra step towards making your team win, i know if my comm was congradulating me i would do alot better then if i was getting screamed at and called a idiot..

    - another thing you might wanna do b4 you start handing out heavies is make the fact clear, if they do something totally stupid to lose there equipment, they better have gotten at least 13 kills or you will not reequip them next time... this makes them think twice b4 they decide to go chase that skulk... or run off to that oc chamber.. of course if you have the res you could possibly reequip him, but it just puts a little fear into them b4 they go and do something... because they might not get what they have again... of course it sounds kinda mean.. but it works..

    - never act like you dont know what your doing... your team will lose total confidence in you and youll eventually lose, unless you have some luck with you.. if you truely dont know what your doing, hop out and let a more experienced person comm..

    - never say "gg" or "gameover we lose", or things like "my marines suck" and comments of that sort... because it will totally kill your overall team moral and unless you can do some major fixins it will be 10 times harder to bring it back up and win the game...

and one of the best ways to learn how to comm is not only to jump in and comm a few rounds... is to actually just play marines and watch and pay attention to what good/serious comm do.. i know by the time of my 2nd game commin i knew as much as any other comm, because i payed attention to the vet comms and learned in there footsteps...

another thing... dont try the same strat too many times, they will catch on, and make it fail... and ALWAYS have a backup plan for every move you make...

Hopefully these tips help you out a bit on your road to comming.. sitting back in that leather recliner... you think that is peaceful and enjoyable... not when your a commander...

Just remember, Commanding is like playing a game of chess... you must think ahead of your enemy, know what there doing next, be confident and play smart... or else your pawns just might get pwnd...

and one more useful tip that many noob comms do... when a marine is sitting at a res node or just arrived at it. listen around... and have him scout a few seconds.. cause a skulk could be waiting behind that corner to hear you drop that rt so he can leap in, gain 3 res and waste 15 of yours... act smart.. think ahead... plan ahead.. Command like a true Commander and you should be rewarded <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
