Why I Still Play Ns

What inspires you?
Eh, I just had to post this. There's not really a point to this thread.

A few days ago, I hopped on my computer to play something. Several icons on my desktop. NS was one of them. Oh so innocent, a brownish hive symbol. Yet I was getting tired of it. Somehow, it began to bore me.

I didn't know why it was on my desktop. That reminded me that I should uninstall it soon. But why was it still there? I decided to spend my time giving it another spin.

Already, because Steam works for me like a Steamed pile of manure, I still used WON. Thank god for Guns 4 Back 2 School - 26 player server. It was there I faced an incredible battle.

On ns_somethingidon'trememberorcarecauseionlyrememberlayoutsandhivesandlikethegame, we enclosed the marines on the Biodome hive. We had everything else besides the res node they had inside Biodome too. Of course, this was not going to be easy to take down (or the post would have ended by now.)

What makes this game different from all the other Biodome sieges I've done?

I should have taken a screenshot, but for one of the elevators going down I believe that there were 15 turrets lined up in a neat row providing an onos, or any other alien, death trap. The other elevator had a similar row. What should we have done here?

Bile bomb? The turrets were just out of range from my bilebombing at the top of the elevator. And the grenades flying up didn't help. In addition to the fact that they made sure the elevator went back up as soon as it went down.

Onos charge? With the turret farms blocking their path and grenades? No.

Lerk sporing? The instant I flew down as a lerk all the turrets cut me apart.

Fade blinking? Like an onos, but with no stomp and less HP.

Skulk? It's too pathetic to laugh at... I think... unless someone has an idea.

In short, we were sieging them, but they were sieging us too. Siege cannons from their base in the hive blew away most of our OCs and DCs in Xenoform Research, coupled with constant grenade spam. They were pushing out, we had to do something fast.

About an hour and a half into the siege, the marines start pushing out.

I realized at this instant the reason why NS still stuck on my desktop. It wasn't the marine vs. alien thing, Aliens vs. Predators already covered that. It wasn't the FPS/RTS thing.

It had an unparalleled commitment to teamwork. In CS, one skilled player could single-handedly wipe out the other team, and had enough ammo to do so. In TFC, a good soldier can take on the other team by himself. Here, we had very strong players... 13 experienced, battle-hardened veterans. But if they had 13 newbies with an organized comm, they would have steamrolled us. And that's what they were doing.

We got together a plan: Fades and onoses charge in with gorges healing and then bilebombing. That doesn't sound hard. AT THE SAME TIME. That was near impossible. With effective leadership, we got the team ready. The instant our lead gorge put up the hive as a distraction was when we charged.

BAMMO.

"Hive is under attack"

About 5 onoses, 2 gorges, 3 fades, and 1 lerk (me ) charged. If we lost this, we would lose the game.

I died after two spores. It didn't look good. But in spectate, I saw that they were literally tearing apart the base, turret by turret, piece by piece. I died, but in part of that sacrifice my team won. Someone, it felt good. Really good.

To you, it'll probably be another description of a pitched battle.

To me, it's why I still play.

I still remember people in my team estatically shouting into their microphones after the game: "Best f****** game ever. Best f******* game."

Thanks for the game, Flayra. Lemme get that $20 or more to you soon.

I'm looking forward to NS 3.0

I'm inspired by the fact that match's at a high level are still fun and really do have ups and downs and comebacks do happen at least in 25% of every match due to base rush's or fade scenerio's.

Sneaking up behind that HA as a cloaked skulk and gnawing a leg off. Launching one last hive-killing grenade before being devoured by an onos. Stomping a whole HA train so that a gorge can get 6 RFKs. Sporing an entire marine base from the cover of a vent. Taking an Onos down with nothing but a lvl 3 pistol & LMG.

That, in my mind, is NS.

Why i still play NS? I was going to give up a few months ago, here is what made me realize not to.

On (what i decided) was going to be my last ns match ever, I joined a 15/16 player server (making me the 16th player) i joined marines, marine team was down by 2 players. They had relocated into sat comm hive. level 3 upgrades (weapons / armour) advanced armory, nade launchers hmg's, heavy armour the lot. Spores and spikes piling in from the vent which was back by oc's and def chamebrs further back. Onos / fades piling in from both doors taking down sentry by sentry, oc's in the hallways. The aliens were ripping us apart. Had a frustrated comm who would listen. So what do you do? just **** around untill the game's over?... no, you need somebody to take control of the team -- just happened to be me

I said something like "stop giving weapons out and let's do something constructive" i organised a strike team to setup a seige attack on the oc's in one side of the hallway, while the other team kept doing suicide runs to create a distraction. we seiged out the ocs

organised the team to make cover and take the hits for the guy with a grenade launcher to take out chemical res points and the millions of oc's in there, we setup a seige / small sentry farm to hold chemical and seige out the oc's that were above that ladder for the exit from chemical. So now we have 2 res points, set up a phase gate to chemical and just get the team to keep pushing and keep doing suicide runs into that res point outside of chemical (i cant remember what it's called) so now we have 3 res points. Save up for 5 guys with heavy armour then we push the whole team into cargo, keep pushing the aliens back and back, setting up sentries / seige into cargo, keep pushing, keep putting preasure on the aliens. Lose alot of heavy armour guys due to onos and devour, but a whole team with shotties held back the onos` and fades while we pushed into fusion and seiged it out. Now we have 5 res points.

Keep pushing the team into the hallway to waste, ignore double res. set up a phase gate between dble res and cargo for easy access to the waste entrance, just get the marines to keep pushing and keep pushing, no armory reloads, nothing. just spawn, phase shoot, die. repeat. mind you we had 4 ip's so it wasnt hard to do

Just keep pushing marines with no ammo into waste holding of onos` and the like. you died before you could use 2 lmg clips and on the rare occasion that you did you'd die shorty after. Keep pushing and pushing into waste, keeping the pressure up, mines down everywherre. must have been 40 res worth of mines in the hallway to waste, killed about 4 or 5 onos. Then another heavy armour strike team to push into waste, 3 with welders, no gun, 3 with shotties, no welders. the waste hive was oc'd up so the 3 with guns shot the hive, the 3 with welders welded the 3 guys shooting the hive. game over.

if not for me, the marines would have been toast a long long time ago.

It's not often when it happens, but Team spirit makes teh game fun. The other night, we were playing a lost game, so we declared a mutiny against teh commander unless he would begin each command with "By the Power of GreySkull!".

The sheer order from chaos makes the game fun for me!

Like the others I have an action packed best comeback of all time!
It was eclipse, back on NS 1.04, marines had almost every resource point on the map, we were down to one hive(Computer Core) and it was been seiged, what can one skulk do? By a shear miracle I made it past all the HA and turrets to Maintenance, by luck the marines forgot to cover in Turrets, so our Computer Core hive dies, no more hives, I quickly evolved, noticing I had 35 resources (1.04 35 resources for a hive), just enough to put the hive up, as soon as I gorged, I put up the hive, only had 15hp left.

What happens next? The commander has forgotten to put up phase gates so the marines have to walk around, they walked to eclipse, which the commander thought was the hive, by that time the hive was almost up, they came to maintenance, by the time they got there, we had another gorge who put down 3 dc under the hive and a resource tower, then a fade evolving and 3 skulk, which I pulled together to form a defense against the HA train, the 3 skulk turned to 5 as the HA walked in with their HMGs and GLs, plus the 2 gorges who heal sprayed the 5 skulk in the heat of battle, we lost 2 skulk in the first few seconds then the fade came to help, the HA were quickly back into a circle of defense, skulks running laps around them using other HA's as meat sheilds, in the end the marines in maintenance were eaten alive by 6 skulk and a fade.

What happens next??? Aliens have 1 hive, 1 Resource Tower, and 3 Defense chambers, with the resources saved up by the suiciding aliens when we had Computer Core hive, we quickly had 4 onos, and 1 fade and 2 lerks. They rushed out as a team with the 2 gorges (Me one of em), we went to southloop and killed the resource tower (What was happening to marines as we did this? they were suiting up for another HA train into maintenance hive), we quickly ran into copmuter core hive which was lightly defended by 5 turrets at each entrance and a couple of seiges which were quickly destroyed, the other gorge put up the hive, and I put up the resource tower, the marines then noticed we had 2 hives, one going up, so they changed to go defend eclipse from the onslaught approaching like a train to a car stack on railway tracks.

We have 2 hives and now we begin the eclipse seige, this was about 1 hour 40 minute into the game, a swarm of HA engulf the eclipse hive, the tactic of distracting the marine by putting up the hive was pointless (In 1.04 the hive starts off with almost no HP and gets more as it builds), we ended up spamming lots of Defense chambers outside the hive entrances and using lerks and a fade to acid rocket/spike the turrets and heavy armour, this lasted about 5 minutes in which we killed 5 turrets out of the 10 and killed 2 HA, then it was onos rush time, they rushed in and took out the turret factory and phase gate in seconds, leaving eclipse's only marine defense the HA that remained (5 HA), we lost 2 of the 4 onos in the rush then another 1 killing the HA, but we gained the hive, then rushed marine spawn, by then the marines had lost alot of resource towers and resources from turret farming, Medpaks, ammo paks, and armour/gun buying, we got to their spawn, they had 3 HA and mines waiting for us, the fades blew up the mines and onos we had left ran in, with the 2 gorges continualy healing the onos who had carapace, it was impossible to kill him. In the end we one the game in 2 hours 5 minutes 34 seconds.

Now coming back from having no hives with one alien left, and marines controlling the map with every resource tower and heavy armour lvl3, that was the best game I ever played.

    1. The australian ns community - I've been part of it since the start and it's generally a great bunch of people with a common interest.

    2. My clan - It's great to be able to get such a reputation that you're able to choose any 14 or so people out of an entire community that you like and that play ns well to be part of your clan. It's like being married to 14 people, or like a huge band. You have your down times, but you also have some huge fun.

    3. Long games - In wars or pub, the ones that go for 30 mins + because the teams are so evenly matched that you get bases down, hives down, rushes stopped all the time and especially in pub you get to know the other 7 or so people in there, all getting fired up and enthusiastic over winning.

I just learned how to bunnyhop well, and it's so fun to chew marines, like 6 in a row, with all by your self as a celerity skulk.
Also, a few more servers are soon coming here, to Finland. Can't wait for 'em.
And one more reason is... the custom map sessions. They're mucho fun.

because theres quite honestly nothing better to play right now. And that doesn't seem to be changing in the near future.

and its the best to play because nothing right now puts so much emphasis on both strategy and straight up FPS skills. You need both to succeed in NS, which is why I like it. It's not perfect, but its closer than anything else right now.

I remember a time a few months back when I was ready to toss NS away and go back to Quake 3 or something.
I went on to Nano Gridlock to see what was happening and maybe say good bye to NS with 1 last battle. I joined the marines just as things were going bad, but my team, mostly made of up EC members with Redford Leading the attack, were holding on tight to Subspace in good ol' ns_Nancy. We were pinned down by fades and lerks (remember this is in 1.04) and had attack after attack by fades non stop. It got to the point that it was a battle to stay alive. After each wave of attacks we would reorganize and get ready for the next.

The action got so crazy that at 1 point the Fades started to rush in and distract us as skulks poured from the vent on the ceiling. Each time we held them back... just barley! This was a special game because I saw tactics used that I had never seen before. A gorge sat in the vent and would build the hive, as soon as the Hive was built FADES started to appear inside the hive room, we were all lost as to how they were doing this. Duh, MCs warp you to the Hive under attack. It was a scary thing to see happen when you started to relax only to have all hell break lose.

We fought back wave after endless wave and after alot of hard work and patience we started to get HA HMG/GL/SG trains built! After over an Hour and a half of intense nail bitting battles and action beyond anything I had ever played in NS, we started to push back the Kharaa out into the hall and towards theie Hives. The game ended with a F4 by most of the Aliens because it was just too evenly matched and the game had been going on for almost 2 Hours.

I had a new Love for NS after that and I have never lost faith again!

Alright, I won't do it again. Just thought that this would be different. Bleh.

By the way, as anyone who has played with me will say, I'm not a champion.

I play NS mainly to beta test and play with my clan nowadays. If it wasn't for either, I'd most likely quit because it takes up so much time. NS is probably the best game out at the moment, which is why I play it. It requires a great deal of skill, good aim for the marines, and stealthy, sneaky skills, plus good ol' half life skills as alien. Plus you have to think to play it.
