<div class="IPBDescription">Just wondering....</div> Ok, so i'm sitting here, smoking a cigarette, browsing the forums, waiting for a test build of co_dawn to compile and it hits me. What do you guys do while you're waiting to compile? I'm not talking day long compiles here, i mean just quick 10-15 minute compiles to have a look at the new room you just built, for example.

But I _need_ music.
Plenty of other things to do while you're compiling, like um....well, yeah.
Smoking while you're compiling = bad, btw.

First I minimize the problem: cordon off the room of interest so I don't have to compile the entire map, then I set chopsize to normal or larger as RAD usually is the most sluggish process or turn of RAD completely(if I am not testing the lighting, then I might even consider compiling with -extra). Then I wait for 20 seconds - 2 minutes while it compiles and play the map and go back to mapping.
In a very worst case scenario compiling would take something upwards 20-30 minutes(usually when RAD eats up more than ~900 MB memory and starts eating into the virtual memory instead beacause I forgot to set -sparse for the RAD process on one of my freak of nature maps with too much detail and too small chopsizes or if I do a full compile), and I'm allready listening to music if I'm mapping, studying, on the bus or pretty much not sleeping so the chances of me not listening to music allready are pretty low <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->, so I usually just browse the net/watch an episode of futurama or something(set the compile processes to low and look at what's in my latest download, not yet viewed pile of TV episodes(I don't have a TV btw, I threw it out <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->))

Don't worry, winamp and most other simple music players take less than 1 % CPU usage on a modern PC.
I'd have to agree, eating is by far the best way to spend time compiling. You can even race the compiler to see if you can finish your sandwich first (before its done compiling)..

I play solitaire, freecell, msn checkers, surf the net, or if the compile is gonna be a bit longer, I flip on the Gamecube.
Sometimes, I might even *gasp* do homework! :o

yeah. i usually listen to music on the compy. or talk with friends on irc/aim. or read the forums.... or watch a movie. watching a movie is good. often times i'll go get food too. like ramen.. mmm.. ramen *runs upstairs*

IIRC the pic is of someone from a japanese band?
Shadows, csg and terrain all almost instant (1-5 second for each of em unless its something complex)
but the problem is that it crashes, but it lets you do other things while mapping.
The only thing that close to a compile time is when you recalculate shadows on terrain burshes.
anyway the engine is the serious engine if your interested.

one of the good things to having an nt based system

On a side note: the serious engine is really nice. It's capable of tons of effects and its FAST. First time I played in multiplayer with the monster count high, I couldnt beleive my eyes that I was still running at a great FPS.
EDIT: There's also pr0n if you get really bored...

Complain to myself that the tools should be faster <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
For short compiles (< 5 min), I just keep working while the tools are running in the background.
For long compiles (full rad, etc.) I usually grab food, read a book, work on the tools, or sketch out ideas on paper.
And there isn't anything wrong with smoking. Pff! All that crap about it giving you cancer.
But I don't usual smoke a cigarette whilst browsing the forums, smoking the snoogans is far better for your health!
Anyway, when I used to map (I still haven't finished Titan6 which is floating around on these forums somewhere), I used to plug in the old SNES and play a bit of StarWing/StarFox. Boss!
I only sit there and watch the screen!
