<div class="IPBDescription">Day went from "Great" to "Crap"</div> Today SUCKS!

I finallly got my Conn. membership today and was feeling REALLY good. That was until my primary system, The Derelict, had a fatal crash. I lost my c drive, and almost all my work from the last 5 years. I've reclaimed my spare system from my sister, but the Derelict still cant btoot up, anyone know how to fix a hard drive?

It makes the "Clicks of death"...

or should i go shopping for a new PC?

    Yes.

Sorry to hear the news, but thats what you get for not backing up your stuff. Maybe you learned a lesson, eh? I'm not trying to be mean, I do feel sorry for you though, but you really gatta back up your files if your computer is that important to you.

Now I'm confused, did you or did you not lose "5 years of work"?

If the read/write head on your boot HD has touched the platters, it's time to throw that old boy away...

There's not much you can do about a huge arsed scratch down the middle of a magnetic disk. If you're other drives are okay, you should be able to just replace that boot drive and get going again fairly quickly. Unless you have kind of weird compatability problem.

Or take the drive to your local hardware company and let them perform a recovery (although expensive)... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Very VERY expensive.

The only time that viable is you have very sensitive and comercially important information on the drives. Like when a University looses a few thousand student accounts...

bad news: I lost the primary archive of my TSO pack
Good news: NS and all the final files of the completed files are safely on the D drive

Plus, it gives me the perfect reason to upgrade, Nforce 2 and Athalon 64 anyone?

My Mum's disk crashed a month ago. My brother bought an exact copy off ebay, took the platters out the knackered disk and put them in the clone, ran it up, and he got the data off (and then threw it all away).

You may find that its just the boot sector that's forked. Try popping it in another machine and reading what you can off it.

I've also heard that if you give it a stout whack or two, it may make it work for a bit before finally dying forever.

    Just a few suggestions.

And yes, backup is your friend.

unfortunately, i know for a fact it's not just the boot sector. What happened was this... (cue Flashback)

I had just gotten up and was checking my mail, for reasons beyond my control, I leave my computers on 24/7, The derelict has been going at this pace for it's nearly 4 year existance (built her during the elections). I had just started Ventrillo, IE, and was activating Trillian as the NS beta was downloading, when the disk drive began to make a "skiiiiitch, CLACK" noise, i barely managed to utter "Uh-oh" before a BSOD (somthing i have rarely seen in XP) popped up stating an "Cannot read xxxxx Idf this is the first time you've seen this, try restarting" I shut down, hoping that it was due to overheating, but it wasnt, i tried later and got the same skiiiiiiitch, CLACK as before, but this time, it ordered me to insert a system disk...

but all is well now, Im getting significant upgrades now...

Prepare yourself for The Derelect: Reloaded

Happened to me a while ago. I was pretty **** about it, since I had a few years of work in there too. After a while though, I realized I didn't even miss my old stuff. And that made me even more depressed because I realized how little work I'd done over the past 2-3 years <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->.
