Why Steam?

Ok ive been wondering this for a while now but why is half life and all its mods moving to steam, now some ppl love it but ive heard more ppl moan about bugs and lots of crashing, also i cant actally use steam myself unless some1 can help me as i get an error saying i am not connected to the internet (i am!) neway i was wondering why is it going to steam, why not stay with WON or whatever it's called?

    Because as soon as Valve decides to pull the plug on it, WON is going bye-bye and any mod without Steam support will have to say goodbye to multiplayer (except perhaps via lan, on an older client/server version of HL.)
