Teach a nub the ways of the Force
Right I'll just cut down to the basics.
I have never watch a Star Wars film (unless Spaceballs counts) all the way through, I have seen bits and pieces of some throughout my existence but never the whole thing. I have completed Rogue Squadron on the good ol' N64 though.
I know the basic story line (Spoilers possible for those who were born yesterday) Good (Jedi/Rebels) vs Bad (Empire), Death Star "Thats no moon," Harrison Ford, Big Hairy Bloke, and my personal favourite camp British robots.
Whilst flicking through Sky movies the other night I cam across the end of Episode II and decided to watch it. I know that Episode II had gotten a slagging off from everyone and their wife but it seemed quite good to me, and it got my thinking that I should watch the Star Wars films and find out what the Hell everyone is always going on about.
First thing tomorrow I am buying Knight of the Old Republic, and I intend to get the movies on DVD, but on my travels through the world wide web I have discovered numerous things about the epic Star Wars story line but am still confused.
So I humbly come to you NS forumites, the nicest net people I know, to lead me towards the path of Star Wars enlightenment.
Posts that have the either of the following or any variant need not apply:

Anakin learns the ways of the force.
Anakin goes bad.
That's basicly Episode 1 - 3.
I don't want to spoil to much, but you'll see it all in the movies. It's a good story line, maybe someone will post more, but not me. ^_^
I know (SPOILER) "Luke I am your father" (SPOILER)
Can someone explain whats all this about stuff not covered in the movies, I mean KoTOR is set 4000 years before the movies so I mean, whats going on in between and stuff.
If you REALLY want spoiler to the movie, say so. However, my advice is.....
WATCH THE MOVIE!!
Hehehe.. that was a spoiler in 1980 or so.
Things you need to know to watch the movie.
The galaxy is going its own thing, right? An order known as the Jedis are believed to be a "religion" of some sort by most people in the galaxy. Most don't believe in its potential. The jedis believe everyone in the galaxy can be separated into good or evil. Those on the evil (dark) side believe the force should be used for power and revenge, while those on the light side believe the force should be used to maintain order and peace.
It's full of jedi-goodness.
Oh, my favorite part in all the movies has to be when Harrison Ford and Luke Skywalker attempt to recue Princess Leia, they kill some guys, and Harrison Ford is trying to talk through the radio to convince the guys on the other side that everything is correct.
Harrison Ford: "Everything is fine here, uh. We had a blaster malfunction. Everything is fine. We're all fine here."
Officer on other side: "Reinforcements will be right down."
Harrison Ford: "Uh, negative negative! Uh severe radiation leak down here."
Officer on other side: "Who is this?! What's your ID number?!"
*Harrison Ford shoots console*
Harrison Ford to self: "I never liked small talk anyway."
Harrison Ford: "Luke! We're gonna have company!"
Step 2: watch the new prequels if you feel like it. Some people like them, some people don't -- sorta like the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movie got similarly mixed reviews.
Step 3: if you want to know what happens in between the movies of the original trilogy, go for these video games: Dark Forces 1, TIE Fighter, and Shadows of the Empire (SotE is also one of the SW novels).
The very recent Jedi Knight and Jedi Academy games are actually sequels in a series that started with Dark Forces 1, back when Kyle Katarn didn't realize he was force-sensitive. Mission 1 is to steal the blueprints to the Death Star, so that lets you know when it takes place. It's basically DOOM, only with slightly better graphics/sound and an actual plot. Some of the puzzles are far more confusing, however.
Both TIE Fighter and Shadows of the Empire take place during & between the 2nd/3rd Star Wars movies ever made. One of TIE Fighter's first campaigns is "The Aftermath of Hoth" (big icy planet from 2nd movie in original trilogy), and Shadows of the Empire's 1st missions are on the planet itself.
Cool things about all 3 of the above games: DF1 and SotE let you beat up on Boba Fett (most bad*** mercenary evar), and TIE Fighter lets you be Darth Vader's wingman and save the Emperor's butt from a kidnapping. Playing evil can be fun
Edit: They have yet to release the original 3 on DVD yet. Expect them sometime next year (remember, it took forever for them to get Indiana Jones out, also).
THEN watch the "new" ones

The ironic thing about that part is that Harrison Ford had forgotten his lines so all of that was adlibbed.

You fight Fett in Jedi Academy also.
I really loved Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight 2. Totally awesome games. I used to live with a bunch of guys, and dueling eachother was great. For somepeople you'd bow, other's you just flat out attack. Even watching those fights were cool, because it was all about finese.
Basically because I understand the basic story of the original films, I was just wondering about the whole storyline and interesting things that people tell me to affirm my desire to watch the films.
That's really all you need to know to watch a new hope. Everything else will fall into place as you watch it.
Before the prequels not a right lot happened basically. The Sith (basically a religion for dark force users. All Sith are dark force users but not all dark force users are members of the Sith) were extinct in the galaxy for a very long time.
Be warned if you ever get into anything which follow on after the original trilogy. While these books/comics/games are allowed by Mr.Lucas to go forward, they are not part of his 'Grand Vision of his Universe'. If he wrote, directed and filmed a sequel trilogy, the books/games/comics are screwed. If fact they already are, because in one of the books, Luke goes lookng for evidence/information to just who his mother was, and she is someone different then Amidala
