Not that I want to bring in political flames , but what were you expecting from an individualistic , capitalist society ? People are taught to care about themselves , and their country at best. During 9/11 it felt like you americans "discovered" empathy... I mean , branding NY firefighters as heroes while it's their daily job to save lives risking their own felt a bit silly.

I'd like to point out that just because it isn't worth getting upset over death (it doesn't help things, and there are more constructive ways to get over grief), it doesn't mean that the life lost was not valuable. There's a big difference between not worrying about it and either actively or passively causing death.

So, I wouldn't worry too much MonsE; we may be apathetic, but we aren't out to get people killed.

i feel good when good things happen to other people. happy. if my friends are happy, it makes me happy. if AIDS in china is getting beaten back, i'm happy.

so conversely, people dying makes me feel not so good.

i cried for so long on 9/11 =\

I'm gonna bore you all to death now. You see, thats very easy with today's people. It cannot hurt, then it is bad for me. I want instant gratification.

The problem is, people won't "grow up". The difference between a kid and an adult is the kid thinks of today, the adult thinks of the next year. Ask yourself what the meaning of life is: It is to procreate. Since humans are social beings, our best security for ourselves and our offspring is to create a society of stability. That society means a place where there is safety, food and shelter for everyone.

To not care for other people is to help povert spread. If all you do is care for you, you help undermine the very fabric of the society you have relied upon to grow up without having been shot down at random or put into slavery. A society is a great institution of trust, where we rely upon other people to do their jobs and not behave violently or super-egotistically.

To ceaselessly chase ones satisfaction is to ignore the hard things you have to do in order to make the society working. That means making sure we create few losers. A loser is one with no job, no chance to mate, no place to live.

The problem lies with the idea that we shall all be competing, we shall all be chasing our own fortunes. The kids of today does just what their ****ed up parents and society tells them to.

Here's the news: competition is good, but cooperation is better. We're bred to cooperate. So think about it the next time you try to shaft someone completely for your own gain. It's a small nail into the coffin of a stable society.

So you should care. On the large scale of things, everyone wins by contributing to a good society and not detracting from it. It is an investment for the future so that your offspring might have a chance to repeate your safe and content life. Grow up!

I worked in a hospital. This is something the state pretty much forced me to do (conscription, and civil service connected with it), but as I look back on it, it felt damned good. I didn't meet or help one person I knew, and it still felt damned good. I'm considering going back.

why do we feel? because we are social animals. we evolved in small hunter/gatherer groups, that cared for one another. this is because a group where everyone was healthy and survived better meant the individual survived better. therefore genes got passed, etc, etc.

empathy is an important trait that ensures our survival as a networked, social group of organisms.

by the by, agree with MonsE, and Imma. great posts.

Death is inevitable, but we should at least care about what caused those deaths.
9 children dying due to military bombardment is quite different from 1 old man passing out.
Every life loss is bad. Every lifeform should be respected.
In a world where interests are stronger than Lives its no surprise many dont give a damn.

Well, I do care if 4 million africans is dying, hell yeah, I just dont feel it the same way I'd feel it if those people was somehow connected to me.
And yes, I'm guilty at looking in the news, feel some moments of pity and forget about it - Afterall, I cant save the world
