<div class="IPBDescription">( depending on different scenarios )</div> I'm just curious about how many players max I could have if I try to create an NS server in the several situations below. I never created any HL servers.
equipment :
-Desktop AMD Athlon +2000, 1GB memory, GF 4 MX, HD 7200RPM,Win XP Pro
-Laptop Pentium-III,800Mhz, 256Mb memory,Win Xp-Pro (for when I need my desktop for other things)
-cable modem : 3,1 Mbit/sec download, 350 kbit/secs upload
Situations :
1) a steam dedicated server
2) a steam non dedicated server
3) a stema dedicated server but with me playing on that server with my NS connected to it on that same PC
4) a Won-id dedicated server
5) a Won-id non dedicated server
6) a Won-id dedicated server but with me playing on that server with my NS connected to it on that same PC
In all those situations, having Zone Alarm and McAfee would have any influences ?

The Desktop could support a lot... probably up to like.. 24+ (especially if you like to mine spam), but given your restricted bandwidth limits, your max would be 10 players if you used the AMX mod that limits the cl_rate and rate client side. If you don't plan on using AMX, you'd probably be constrained to 5 or 6 players.
Mind you, this is in my own experiences on WON... for steam, the player cap would probably go down by 1-4 players because steam is crap.
Don't run a non-dedicated server... they're just not as good.
In scenarios 3 and 6, that wouldn't work at all. The footprint for NS would own the server's footprint. I've tried it when I was really a newbie, and I got down to 2 fps on the server (w00t!). You'd at least need to connect to your dedicated server through a different computer, even if on the same LAN.
ZoneAlarm and McAffee would affect the server's performance if it's installed on the server itself. You want as little a footprint from other processes as possible. You might also want to set your server to AboveNormal, but never High or Realtime because they're unstable.
Also, it is my personal opinion that AMD processors are not great for servers. Opteron, AMD64, AMD64 FX, or P4/Xeon with HyperThreading are good choices, again, in my opinion.
and 9 players won't lag in any of the situations there.
