I know this sounds cheesy, but I think all maps are great.
Now if you mean also considering balance, most people consider mineshaft, caged, lost and bast as unfair and just never play them. The first map that I actually learned the layout of. I could navigate the entire map without hitting the map key! Of course, I hit it all the time anyways (OHNO! TEH RED TRIANGLES ARE ATTACKING teh thingy taht looks like an ant with 4 legs!), because of the red triangles =)
That and it's balanced, unless marines reloc to waste. Then it just sucks =/
Eclipse was the first map I ever learned the layout of. I remember my n00b days of ns way back when it first came out. Knowing where the comm told me to go without a waypoint for once was the greatest feeling <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->.
One thing i didnt like about the new 2.0 maps is that they made many not needed changes from the 1.04 maps. I.e removing many elevators/doors. So to me alot of the 2.0 maps arent the same.

I liked that one where there was a hallway from the marine start all the way down to a dark room with a node. And a hive that was underground. And an intersection in the middel. Um yeah. Unfortunately I never see it being played any more. That would be ns_nancy, i think. It has the intersection in mess hall, and Mother HIve was sorta of underground, if you look at it funny. Anyways, look <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=43856' target='_blank'>here</a> to see when they will fix nancy and see if it gets put into 3.0
co_faceoff, with a close second being co_rebirth. Both of them have such ambiance (Though co_angst is better in that regard) and are VERY well designed maps, and they are both beautiful in terms of hiding spaces, realistic item placement, and overall balance and fun.

Waiting for the final version, but I think it's gonna be ns_ayumi. Such an amazing layout, with weldables all over the place and lots of fun and beautifull rooms.

i don't know why... well, it's prolly cuz it was the first map i played on, and it holds a lot of good memories... ah.... hera....

Current maps I'd probibly go with caged or hera.
Origin is my second favorite map, it feels fairly balanced, with the exception of biodome hive being rather awkward. It also looks very nice.
