problem with that is cost - where i live its either the same price or more expensive than adsl and theres a limit on how much you can use most of them in a month. im to rural to get adsl at the moment apparently so im gona have to wait for bb it seems... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
I believe the total population of Australia is 17 last I checked. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Don't feel bad you can't connect to the Steam from any college campus because the pings are 100. And to the above didn't you hear the population rose to 18 yesterday.
I guess it might be a little late to respond to the original poster but....
I don't have any first hand experience with playing NS on a modem, but we've made a number of improvements to client side prediction of the weapons and the movement so NS 3.0 should be more playable over a high latency connection than NS 2.01.
well maby, but steam does not agree with dial-up(i assume, i got cable a month before steam released) i mean, unless you have a dedicated phone line with a reliable service that won't disconnect you, steam needs, if memory serves me right, to download 90 mbs to update from the default cache that the installer ships with, and then 150 more for 3.0, and at 56 k that will total 80-280 minutesdependingg on network saturation.
I currently play 3.0, from australia on 56k. You get used to the 600 ping, and the game is still pretty playable. Other then the constant abuse I get for "OMG ranged bite"
I get bb here around feb so im realy looking forward to some sweet payback. NS is great for modem use though. Generaly if you have a low connection dont bother to connect to a 21 player server. I stick with min 14 max 18.

The problems occur when he is playing an alien and attacks a room full of turrets, his ping will rocket up to the 4000+ range.
I didn't read any posts, but I'll respond to your post monkey. I connect at homoe on 26.4 Kbps. And I can play. Mostly support roles, and occasionally as marines, but it's playable. My rate is 2500. So, if you are connected faster than 26.4, then you should be able to play ok.
I actually commanded a game on dial up, and it worked well, until I got too many entities ro somethign and my connection couldn't keep up with my committments. BUt I think most 56k'ers will be OK, just the initial DL of the mod...
if anything, u should be able to play combat fine. If running a combat only server takes as little resources and bandwidth as it does, then the client is only better. For reg ns, the ns team has done a ton of work of fixing the lag problems (which mostly were from turrets i believe)
hope that helps <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
And noone answered my question, is there a huge difference between 56k getting 300 ping and ADSL(whatev) getting 300 ping? I mean, when I had nearly 200 in rc2, I could see how my enemies went choppy(not bad frames as that looks completely different), and also how stuff didn't go where I aimed(because rc2 uses mostly projectiles).

You're dial up connection depends a lot on your phone line and it's sound-to-noise ratio. At one point, my phone line had very little noise and I could play NS with a rate of 4200. But now my phone line became crap, and I can only sustain a rate of 3500 at most, and I often get "loss of carrier" errors. But when my phone line was good, NS was almost flawless on 56k.
