Am I The Only Comm Who Likes A Rambo?

Let me explain
Marines are stupid. They rely on the commander to tell them exactly what to do. Alot of times they can understand the situation bettter than the commander. While all the marines are trying to push to take that one res node or hive, the aliens are buildign up the rest of the map.

What's responsible for winning almost all of the games I've commed as is one or two marines who know what to do when I say "res hunt". They're the guys who sneak in another direction without being told to, and secure 3 res nodes and lock down a hive while the rest of the team is goofing around at base or this one fought-over rt. I'm so glad when I see someone on the team has a brain and can just go get some resources, or set up a siege when noone else knows what's going on.

Good marines don't need to be told what to do. It's a pleasure to command when just a few marines have a brain in their head and will find and kill all the enemy resource towers. Eveyone always complains about ramboing, and good player will always stick with the team. Nonsense. The key is map/res control, and one group of marines can't cover the whole map. You need a rambo to go off to get res, kill enemy res, and lock down key points in the map such as hives.

Does anyone agree?

Well i agree that you need 1-2 rambos (depending on how big the server is) to cap/destroy res. Usually the rambos are the only people who take orders, while the rest of the team just do something (fight over 1 res usually...)

Although the rambos must know what their doing (and i would really prefer to call them ninjas.) They know exacty when to attack and when to hide, when to attack a fade going for a heal spot, they know when to ask a pg or rt of tf or whatever. But when n00bs go rambo (see here i like to say rambo) nothing good comes out of it, they die at the first oc or try to ambush some fade even though its got full hp.

In short, 1-2 experienced ninjas needed (clan members are usually good), but all other n00bs/ok players need to stick together and shoot everything that moves.

I think there is a good balance between the normal foot soldier and the 'hero' units.

Sure, you have your generals, but you also need your captains too! I think there really should be a squad leader asignment put in. They would get like a white star above their heads, only rines see to show this. Might be useful.

Rambos in big games will lead to a certain victory, period.

Rambos can be helpful, today I, and a other Rambo secured 2 Hives with PGs and Res Nodes on NS_Mineshaft while the whole Alien Team tryed to hold the res outside our base

Yeah, you always need some rambos, but would you want the whole team going out to rambo? Then getting owned by an organized Kharaa regiment, and getting your base raped? I've seen it happen in like 2 minutes because they didn't listen to comm. Marines are at an unbalanced disadvantage, you require teamwork.

The term is too loosely defined. If you mean 'autonomous player', then yes, rambos are necessary, but I'd prefer to call them 'scouts'.
However, if you assume 'rambo' to mean 'fraghungry player with little interest in his teams wellbeing and big interest in his guns size', I'd argue that you are indeed the only commander who wishes for them.

    What Nem said.

I was wondering how you consider the players "rambos" when you say "res hunt" and they do it. Sounds like following orders to me!

Free thinking Marines who follow orders are the best and I think thats what you're trying to get at. Those that follow orders when you say go here do whatever but can actually take a look at the location and notice whats happening and take action when need be.

Now all we need is most comms to realize that start ignoring the clowns and helping the smart players.

Like, I am sure curlydave, you realize that these players are your strongest asset and you prob drop HA and beastie weapons on them first. Too many times I'll be in a game where the comm is decent but there is only like myself, my roommate and maybe one or two other guys who are any good. (i.e. CAN AIM.) Yet when we actually survuve long enough to get HA the comm just drops 5 suits of it around the armory then surprise suprise, five clowns are now dancing around with HA.

Put the tools of destruction in the hands of your best players. If every comm did this, eventually EVERYONE would listen to comm because they'd realize it's the only way to get HA or whatever toy they want. But as long as comms just randomly drop equipment, you're encouraging ramboing as your chances of scoring phat loot are random weather you listen or not.
