<div class="IPBDescription">thief, MGS, hitman, etc?</div> so what's the general opinion on the best stealth game(s) out there? I know a lot of people like MGS2... I remember liking it, but I only rented it and didn't have the opportunity to absorb all the goodness.
I never got into the Thief games... they're pretty fun but I always get frustrated pretty quick, since the levels get real hard real fast...
Hitman 2 -- same thing. The irony of that game amazes me. To get the best rating, you have to kill nobody. Your reward for killing nobody? better weapons!!
I've always been a Tenchu man, myself. The PS2 Tenchu is particularly cool... cool weapons, setting, control, stealth kill animations, you don't have to avoid killing people, and if you mess up and get spotted once or twice, you usually don't destroy your score...
what stealth games am I leaving out?

note- thats just from the first level, too(all I've played is the demo. I need a damned WORKING copy of that game)
That's my second favouite <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
My favourite one would have to be the tanker mission on MGS2. The Plant was OK but the Tanker owned. Did you know that it was originally going to be an aircraft carrier? (watch the DVD that comes with the game, tells you lots.)
but hitman 2 all the way. there's nothing better than being able to choose between poisoning and axe beheading your client. and hitman 2 has CHLOROFORM!!! what other game has that?<!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> cmon =D but seriously, it has some of the best stealth system material ever.
example: here's a dissection of ONE way to do one of the missions.
sniper method A
NOTE: steps 1-2 are optional, but aid tremendously in infiltration.
1. steal a guard's uniform
2. steal a matching weapon, or your disguise is useless
2a. if you don't procure the exact weapon, you can use a similar one, like a SVD sniper rifle instead of an AK
2b. if you come too close to a sentry with the ad hoc disguise weapon, he'll recognize your weapon and will identify you.
2c. at close range, hold your weapon at your side, not aiming it in front of you suspiciously.
>submethod 1
3. sneak into the church tower.
3a. for a better score, chloroform the sentries instead of killing them.
4. aim carefully from the top of the tower, and take out the clients.
4a. NOTE: unless you brought a MORE-THAN-SILENCED (crossbow) piece, the guards WILL be alerted to your presence.
>submethod 2
3. trek to the radio tower and climb it
4. take the fairly difficult shot from about half a mile away, without directly alerting the guards.
those are the SNIPER methods for that mission
submethod 1 provides better visibility, easier range, and a longer opportunity window.
submethod 2 provides a lesser chance of detection.
of course, yet another method = bust out the dual .45s and blow all them mof***as away.
another method ENTIRELY involves finding bombs planted by your agency, and then somehow planting those on heavily guarded limos..
when you've got that kind of freedom to ruthlessly destroy individual human lives, why do it in real life?
*EDIT* I hated SC
agreed, master miller <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
I totally forgot about that. Controllers where iffy though, and it wasn't to great.
honestly, if sam fisher is the best freaking guy in the whole freaking **** **** monkey **** **** **** WORLD
then it SHOULD NOT TAKE HIM
TWENTY SECONDS
<span style='font-size:16pt;line-height:100%'>TO FOCUS HIS AIM</span>
<span style='font-size:18pt;line-height:100%'>WITH AN ERGONOMIC PISTOL</span>
<span style='font-size:20pt;line-height:100%'>WHILE WEARING GLOVES</span>
<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'> ON A TARGET FOUR FEET AWAY!!!! ARG(&SHEGHDGAWHL:GHDZAAWaWdadW</span>
One of my favorite parts of the game was the part where you have to sneak into that kitchen and then snag a cook when he's RIGHT behind the other cook, then drag him into the freezer and knock him out! Good times.

the first (training) level was <b>horrible</b>
<span style='color:red'>***spoiler***</span>
you finish the game by walking through a door.
no, wait ... you press action on the door and it asks you if you want to save.
no jumping into your v-22 (osprey) amidst a hail of bullets
no rapelling to safety off of a cliff wall
no hopping into a getaway car
you dont even get to open the door
and since when did large dinner halls have doors that lead directly outside?
oh yeah, there wasnt even a omg finished! movie ... you just see sam on his boat with his kid.
that game just played like a tech demo for the lighting system, average controlls, repeated animations, a whole lot of clipping through walls, average player models, ok physics system, and a nonexistant story.
while on the other hand, you finish metal gear solid (ps1) with otocon/meryl driving, and you on the .50cal making genome soldiers look like red swiss cheese

Hitman 2
Its amazingly cool to sneak into a building full of mafiosos and fiberwire their boss leaving his corpse on the roof
WITHOUT BEING SEEN BY ANYONE (including the boss)
(BTW if you wanna have some sick fun in Hitman 2, get a sniper rifle and then zoom in on the guy taking a **** on the tree in mission one, you'll see.... umm... welll... everything )
I didn't like the last mission though, it was really too hard for the first few seconds, then you got to a huge weapons cache and it turned into Quake. Hell, the end boss was easy too.
Hitman 3 is in the works though <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

There is a reason for that... Scilenced weapon brings enemies from half the mission away, AK draws no-one...
Thief 1 and 2 were awesome. Hardcore awesome. I liked Splinter Cell, had good stealthyness, but too easy once you got the rifle.
ThieveryUT is such a tense game. As a guard it's not obvious to find the location of hidden thieves... being surrounded in the dark is a scary experience. It's no less scary to be chased by a bunch of angry guards as a thief...
The pace of the game is extremely slow compared to NS. The average duration of a Thievery round is 20 minutes , but the actual fights only last a few seconds : guards spend their time investigating noises or finding clues from careless thieves. Thieves try to remain undetectable and catch loot and objectives under the guard's noses without them noticing.
***Spoiler Again***
You do finish the game jumping into the Osprey amidst hail of bullets. And the dinner hall (I'm assuming your talking about the last level) has a door leading into the kitchen and into the main hall. This is on the PC version. Maybe the PS2 version is different.

that actually sounds really cool... I wish I could find my UT CD key so I could try it out... <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->
am I really the only Tenchu fan in the entire NS community? =P
c'mon, c'mon! dropping down on a guard and sticking your katana right down his spine? breaking someone's neck with your legs? all without being seen? dood.
In fact the nearest thing to Stealth was the first Hitman, man that hotel mission was hard <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->

then i guess they ripped that part out of the ps2 version
walk up to the door in the dinner hall
"do you want to save?'

Roll on Thief 3!
I'm sorry, but I had the best month of my life as it relates to games as an infiltrator. I got soooooooo damn good at it too.
Nothing, and I mean NOTHING beats the game-related rush of sneaking into the computer room of a base you own that's being hacked by the enemy. With 2 Terran Max Nazi's sitting there ready to pound you into oblivion. Sneaking past them amongst the clutter of idiots coming into the room just to check the timer. And re-hacking the base back with only 22 seconds to spare. Especially when one of the friggin anchored MAX's actually whips around and stares right through you to check the hack time remaining.
Even though you're SURELY dead after accomplishing this feat. It's still funny as hell to see them swear up a storm and shoot everything in sight when the room changes colors, or to talk to the max's using localspeak and trying to convince them to leave the room while standing right beside them, posing as a friendly that's standing outside the room.
It's too bad they completely messed that game up right before the official release and continued to make it worse by the day.
Pandora tomorrow looks amazing. I love the idea of multiplayer.
