the only cool thing for ps2 is socom. I almost bought a ps2 just for that game....thank god I didn't.
I think everyone is just scared because microsoft is going to take over the gaming console world, just like they did with computers.....MAUahahahahhaa. SCREW YOU ANTI TRUST LAW!111
Like DOOM said, base it on the games you want. For me, it's a close first with the PS2 and wanting games like FFX, Gran Turismo, SOCOM, etc. The PS2 just has everything for everybody to enjoy, and I mean, it just came out with the eye toy, and if you haven't used it, you are truly missing out <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
A *very* close 2nd is the GC, I mean, it has Metroid Prime, Zelda, assortments of Mario action and racing games, Smash Bros and more. The gamecube definately has less titles to work with, but it's top games are among the best out there, quality over quantity is what is key here.
The Xbox has Halo, oh wait, it was done on PC with still the annoying copy-paste singleplayer, and 10 times better multiplayer (but it is lacking cop-op I do admit). Hey, it now has Counter Strike!, oh wait... what about KOTOR, damn, that too..well of course we have Vice City, which came out on PS2 first, then PC, aaaand finally on the Xbox so we have Halo 2? Halo 2 does look good, it seems they woke up and dragged their face off the copy function, but 1 game just doesn't cut it for me. The main thing the box has for it is graphics, which really don't mean much to me, I can have just as much fun playing Doom as playing Unreal Tournament.

Man, if I have to hear that lame assed defense of the original MS controler one more time.... ah screw it. I'll let penny arcade speak for me (again):
The X-Box is far superior to many of the consoles out currently (Yes I own other consoles as well! SHOCK!)
While the Gamecube may have some top quality games the rest of the software platform for it is, well, lacking to put it politely. And while many games on the X-Box are eventually ported to PC or vice versa there are some quality titles to be found.
Oh that and many games are just starting to use the custom playlist option.
Nothing like playing Volleyboob ( <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ) to the Offspring, somehow it just fits <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
-EDIT- And if you want to play any of the newer Rare games the only way you can now is with an X-Box, Perfect Dark Zero anyone? -EDIT-
let's face it, all you're gonna get here is opinions... like has already been said in the thread, your best bet is to just look at the games and work out if there's really enough games on it that <b>you</b> like to justify that big wad of money. We could sit here all day arguing about what games are good or crud but at the end of the day we're not you, and no two people think alike.
My xbox problem was that when I looked in the shops I couldn't see even one of the few titles I genuinely think are good for it. I can understand 'Tekki' (steel batallion) not being amongst the normal stock but I couldn't find 'True Fantasy Online' either (no idea if it's good or not, or even out, I just liked the look of it =3 ). It's also got the ever cool PSO, but unless the rumours of extra content for the xbox are true then I've played it to death and back already anyways; now that I think of it I couldn't even see that in the local shops either =/

In short, if you have a PC that predates Half-Life itself, investing in an XBox may be a good idea. It's just a mid-low end PC anyway, whose games will eventually be ported to PC, look prettier, perform faster, and be more versatile. (Can you say 'force 6x AA'? Or 'force 16x Aniso'? Knew you could.)
If not, save the money and wait around for X-box HAL translators to be released. At that point, spend $40 on an XBox controller and a PC Pad conversion box. It's honestly not worth it, to me.
(In addition, yes. Halo sucked. It sucks a *little* less on the PC side, though the removal of co-op is disappointing.. but does protect Microsoft's marketshare.)
The PS2 is great for single player games. Many of the greatest singleplayer games are found on the PS2, although as much as i dislike the FF series, it seems a whole lot of people enjoy it. The PS2 only has 2 contoller ports and support for more than 2 is slim to none, making it bad for multiplay.
The XBOX on the other hand is great for multiplay, but i have yet to play a good singleplayer game on it. I admit I bought my XBOX for 2 games - Halo and DOA3 - which both suck royally on their own, but can both be played up to 4 player (and halo up to 16 <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->) and are a blast in a group situation.
So in conclusion, the PS2 is a good console if you like to play with yourself, while the XBOX is the best choice if you have freinds.
(ps. couldnt resist opinionated jab, take that ps2 owners <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->)
The PS2 is probably the best choice overall, simply put it has the highest diversity in all genres. The X-Box is good though if and only if you like 3 genres: Sports, Action and racing. It lacks good RPG's, and those it has (KotoR) are basically on the PC as well. It has the WORST selection of survival horror games on the 3 consoles, and dino crisis 3 is easily the worst survivial horror game I've played. Finally, it is poor for platformers as well, getting all its actually decent platformers from companies that are multiplatform ironically.
Essentially I wouldn't bother with an X-Box unless I don't care for a lot of variety, because what it does it does fairly well (the three first genres). Most other things it does rather poorly, and those things it does poorly are what I want really on a console (Platformers and Survivial horror games).
The other killer blow to it imo, is its lack of decent exclusives which have plagued it from the consoles inception. It lacks the kind of games I like like Silent Hill 3, Resident Evil 0, Fatal Frame 2 or Ghosthunter. Or the likes of Jak and Daxter 2, Ratchet and Clank or Mario Sunshine.
If you buy it for anything though, at least buy it for the likes of Crimson Skies and Panzer Dragoon Orta (which I also advise you to buy, brilliant game, but NO ONE BOUGHT IT! Again, I've said this in other threads discussing X-Box exlcusives, but why did crap like Halo sell, when sheer brilliant like PDO did not? What sort of evil twisted criminal world is it when old school modernised brilliance like PDO is ignored over a game that copies and pastes itself? JUST WHY!? TELL ME WHY!!!). Also Project Gotham Racing 2 is really awesome if you have X-Box live.
But again, buy it for the games. If you want a ton of diversity however, ignore the X-Box and Gamecube and go for the PS2. If you like specifics done well, choose either a GC or X-Box depending (GC for adventure games, ie Zelda and Nintendos other exclusives plus Rogue Squadron series, and the X-Box for Sports/Action/Racing games)
Meh. Hate on halo all you want. I'm just saying that Halo was the sole reason that <b>I</b> bought <b>my</b> x-box - and more for the lan-party aspect than anything else. Trust me - there is little that is as effing cool as a full fledged 16-player halo bash <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Would this not gain them more publicity and popularity, such as fellow pundit Maddox enjoys? Would the internet masses not suck it up and ask for more?
Tell me - how many of you folks complaining about "copy + pasting" could actually tell me what map(s) it occurs on? I know there are plenty of you out there - I also know that for every one that does know, there's at least another who is just talking out the backside.

Dub's right on as far the the multi goes. Gaming on a lan with 16 other people is much more fun than doing the same thing online. Especially at 4 in the morning. After a 5 hour game of CTF.
In my opinion I don't think any console is really worth it. The only thing that comes close to deserving my money is the Gamecube. I'm only getting a PS2 because it's being given to me for free, and I won't even lay hands on an X-Box...though the X-Box does have a good line-up for 2004...
it's funny because though I read the 'copy and paste' arguements I didn't notice it on the level most people complain about ^^; Supposedly the library is the true horror of the same level over and over but I was too busy blasting to notice... the one I DID notice and actually kinda started getting on my nerves was the compound inside the caves... the one that ocassionally opened out into frozen landscapes (which were fun and a welcome escape). Admittedly the library got annoying too but that was more because you were just constantly hounded by never-ending hoards of monsters and I hate unlimited respawns =3

XBox is indeed the best console. Not only does it have Halo, but it also has both Project Gotham Racings, Crimson Skies, Rainbow 6 III(diff version from PC), Ghost Recon & its Expansion(Xbox version has tons of extra stuff that makes it like a new game), and basically a ton of great games are on it.
But, if it was between getting games for your PC, or getting a new console and a few games, I'd go PC. Just because most of XBox' games are on PC.
I tried Halo and thought it was mediocre. The only games for X-Box that interest me are in development, and will probably suck when they come out. Not that I really care. I can't remember what games I was looking forward to, and won't ever buy an X-Box.
The greatest console ever forged by human hands was the Dreamcast.

<a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/rainbowsix3/' target='_blank'>Rainbow 6 : 3</a> Which is far better on PC as you can control your team with the Xbox head set communicator.
Also Xbox live is very good as it makes the games last longer plus you can download new content, for Splintercell on Xbox they relase new levels for you to play on, or on Unreal championship you can download new maps or characters for online play. Also the Xbox will be getting Half life 2 later after its PC relase and wont be able to have MODs on it.

It's a shame what happened to the Dreamcast did happen, the games were excellent, the machine was powerful.... it just made no sense that it died. RIP Dreamcast.
I went for a Gamecube simply for the Resident Evil titles; Zelda, Prime, Mario etc. were just a nice bonus. I'm just not enticed by Xbox, although Project Gotham 2 is rather lovely.

I agree.
sorry Factor, but you've immediately lost all credibility in my eyes by stating Unreal II as a game, let alone one you'd actually want to play =P
I would get an Xbox, yes i have one and yes i played on a PS2 and Gamecube, the Xbox has some good games and a nice line up.
<a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-US/sudeki/' target='_blank'>Sudeki</a>
<a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/rainbowsix3/' target='_blank'>Rainbow 6 : 3</a> Which is far better on PC as you can control your team with the Xbox head set communicator.
<a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/fable/default.htm' target='_blank'>Fable</a>
<a href='http://halo.bungie.net/' target='_blank'>Halo and Halo 2</a>
<a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/bc/default.htm' target='_blank'>BC</a>
<a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-gb/starwarsknightsofoldrepublic/' target='_blank'>Star Wars : KOTOR</a>
<a href='http://www.gearcritech.com/archives/000377.php' target='_blank'>Splinter Cell 2</a>
Also Xbox live is very good as it makes the games last longer plus you can download new content, for Splintercell on Xbox they relase new levels for you to play on, or on Unreal championship you can download new maps or characters for online play. Also the Xbox will be getting Half life 2 later after its PC relase and wont be able to have MODs on it.
But its all up to you really.
Seconded.
It's a shame what happened to the Dreamcast did happen, the games were excellent, the machine was powerful.... it just made no sense that it died. RIP Dreamcast.
I'm just not enticed by Xbox, although Project Gotham 2 is rather lovely.
