Tips to help please!
Does anyone know the range and dynamics of the parasite shot? I have difficulty always hitting in one shot and getting the splat sound - is it random if when you hit it parasites.
Is there a particular set of chamber upgrades you go for if you plan to parasite?
Please share any experiences.

Don't bother trying to hear the splat sound, try slipping behind cover too see if you can see that yellow circle.
In answer to your other question, I don't think anyone really bothers upgrading for the parasite, you can fire 3 without running out of energy, which is usually good enough.
It's a perfectly accurate direct hit weapon that always parasites when it hits.
Good upgrades if you like parasiting ppl:

regen, so you can recover from the few bullets that hit you before peeking around the corner again

cloaking, so you can parasite them from behind and recloak before they spot you

adren, so you can fire more often. Silence doesn't seem to work too well for the actual attack, since it's the hit that makes most of the noise, but you may find it useful to sneak up on the rines to parasite.

Adren's handy if you intend to make a habit of para, but it's mostly useless in other situations (although I suppose you could leap around the map a bit). Hence I'd not take adren - I'd keep with celer.
Strafing and paraing can be useful if you're facing a newish marine, but in general you'll want to run up and bite people rather than para them.
I fully agree. Sometimes it makes a splat sound when it hits an entity (such as a func_door, func_wall, etc) so you shouldn't rely much on the splat sound at all.
Also, if a marine has already been parasited, sit behind a corner and strafe out and para him some more to annoy him. It's alot easier when you know where he is.
Happy parasiting!
1. Para is hitscan, so I'm pretty certain it has effectively unlimited range.
2. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but IIRC: Once the rines have level 1 armor, you'll need 3 skulk bites to kill them. Alternately, you can do 2 bites and 2 paras. So, if you double-tap, in addition to tagging the rine, you also make him easier to kill. This effect is even more pronounced with focus.
