Do You Still Download Music?

BaconTheoryBaconTheory Join Date: 2003-09-06 Member: 20615Members
<div class="IPBDescription">Despite the RIAA crackdown?</div> I was wondering how many of you still download music from KaZaA and other file-sharing services despite the RIAA crackdown. If you do, why do you still do it? And does the fact that someone could be monitoring you scare you?

I'm interested to see some thoughts on this.

I'll download a song every once and a while to try out a band, if I like em, I go out and buy the CD.

I'm not scared by the crackdown, there's just too many people that use the software.

Can RIAA catch me here in Finland? Do they care?

    Right, so I'm safe <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> Though I don't even download much music nowadays. Probably around 5 songs during the last 6months. I'm a dangerous villain!

Haha. Good point, the RIAA can't get you in Finland. You could download all the songs you want and not get busted. You lucky dog... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Well, if you disable sharing they have absolutely no method to find you, I believe.
Also every country has a counterpart like RIAA so you wont be safe in finland either <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I download more music, just to **** them off. If they want to hack my computer, go ahead. I'll sue for invasion of privacy. That is, if they can get through my firewall. Which I'm sure they can, and then when they do, I'll sue them for breaking into what is mine, when they had no right to do it. Come get me RIAA, I'm waiting for you.

Har, only if it would give a damn and lay down the coffee mug. Seriously, while ago I read how the finnish authorities had done a huge raid on illegal spreading of music. I was halfway dismantling my computer and hiding the pieces under various rocks and bushes, when I continued reading and realized that police had just arrested some guy who had sold thousands of pirated games, movies and music cd's. Regular mp3 downloaders? They don't give two craps about us. And yet again I can rely on Finlands slow witted government to not pass any acts that would harm sharing via internet. I guess it's illegal on some level but I bet none knows for sure and none wants to know because none cares.

    Hence: I r teh safe <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

I don't bother anymore. Why put up with the spyware that comes with P2P programs, or the RIAA flooding out faked mp3s, or how it takes forever to get that one song you want? I haven't wanted or needed to pirate a single song ever since I found out about streaming internet radio.

More recently I even found that one of the DJ's I like, Armin Van Buuren, has been having weekly ~2 hour sets of music freely and legally downloadable for so long, they're already up to episode 129 by now. I get a bittorrent file, download at about 200-300 Kbps, and I've got an mp3 so big it takes a file splitter to put it on two normal music CDs.

At the rate I'm going, the RIAA is less likely to sue me than they are to sue the rest of my family.

Of course I do. I'm just not stupid enough to download vanilla Kazaa and share out my whole computer. Doing that is asking to get sued/attacked by the RIAA. Don't share and you'll be fine.

Lots of music. But I don't use Kazaa. Kazaa is complete wanker.

I should probably add, of course, that I use a non Kazaa program.

I go through a boatload of music, I just instantly delete 99.9% of it. It is invaluable for finding the music and the bands you like.
What with having a 10 mbps connection with no bandwidth cap and living in Sweden as well as not using kazaa(uguhuhuh *shivers*) the RIAA can't really do anything.

*Looks at oDC in the help/about topic*. Stats(mind you this is since install, about half a year ago and most of this stuff is TV episodes of various series I like and have no chance at all of viewing in Sweden) upload: 139.45 GB, download: 179.67 GB.

I usually get >500 kB/s and can find most everything somewhat normal in my favorite hubs. Normal would be stuff like "curb your enthusiasm" or "Star trek enterprise" episodes that you wouldn't have much trouble finding on kazaa either.

*looks at favorite hubs' current stats*, 949 users all with 10 mbps full duplex connections and practically no queues anywhere as well as a total of 93.48 TB total of data shared(not unique data, many clients share the same popular files).

I pirate very little software and I don't keep songs that I DL and listen to them over and over and over because I find it wrong, if cool/quality stuff is not rewarded then crap will prevail, because garbage is simply cheaper to produce. This is my TV without commercials and TV-shows I actually like instead of horrible, evil, filthy"docu-soap"(AKA "reality show") after "docu-soap" with commercials in-between.

It is what I use to try games that don't have demos(if they do, I prefer to try the official demos) as well as my way of finding music I like, I would buy much less music if I could not even get to sample a lot of different things to find those I like.

Here in Canada we've been paying 10-20 cents per CD (blanks) for god knows how long now.. so I'm still DLing to my heart's content. gg RIAA.
  • BaconTheoryBaconTheory Join Date: 2003-09-06 Member: 20615Members
I just think this whole thing is crap. It's very stupid how If I want to listen to just one song, I have to go buy the whole CD. Also, It's not like the Recording Companies don't make enough money already. I still download music frequently. I'm not scared of RIAA. They will never catch "Teh 1337 NiNj@" I will use my uber-1337 IP cloaking and evade them. Seriously though, I'm not afraid of the RIAA.

If you don't share, they can't track your ISP. So they can't catch you.

And, heh, I love this part, I believe it was just ruled (temporarily?)that they can't even use your ISP if they download you. Effectively cutting the legs out from underneath them in catching you.

As far as downloading music, bah. Most if its crap anyways. I can look for hours to find that one Ella Fitgerald track, but in ten seconds I'll have a million Brittany hits. Makes me sick.

I'll go to the local library instead thank you very much.

I still do. I feel guilty, but I'm one of those people who won't buy cds anyway. Chances are, you won't get caught unless you're used to having 10+ ppl downloading from you all the time. And PLEASE, unless you're sharing VERY heavily, TURN ON SHARING! I've noticed a huge drop in sources recently because everyone's disabling share.

hero: they don't hack your computer, they check your ISP's records, i think <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->. btw, gogo rebellious teen spirit!

marik: there's kazaa lite, ya know. It's not available for d/l anymore, but most people will have a backup somewhere, and if you can't get your hands on a copy, just do a search for kazaa lite on the normal kazaa.

I don't download English music anyways. Most of the music I download is French, Arab, or African. The reason being that it's impossible to buy them in America, and I have no way of finding out who is good or not otherwise then taking a few shots in the dark, and hoping I find a good lead to a good band. The only way I can do this is with P2P.

So in short, heck yah I still download music.

My record is mostly clean. I don't download music often, my only lapse in the last 4 months was downloading a bunch of sisqo until I found 1 track I was hunting for and didn't know the name of (which turned out to be "The Thong Song"). But I should mention that I didn't cut down on my downloading because of fear of the RIAA, I stopped because most music coming out is just crap by my tastes :/

When there's some kind of organization that scours kazaa for people sharing porn then I'll be concerned. Until then, the internet is still a place of true freedom.

Yar! Shivar me Livar! They'll not catch me! If they do, I'll sail away I will!

Hells yes I download music, but I can't find most of it because I connect to Western Servers, and I have a list of songs I want... I compile that list from what I hear on Digitally Imported... and it's all European Music, and I can't ever find what I want.

I still download a lot of music, but it's more or less for evaluation purposes most of the time(although there are some bands I like, but they're too old/unknown for the music stores here to sell).
I don't really buy for quality or something, hell, I love my father's LP discs and listen to them a lot, man.... music back then was good(*shakes fist at father* I envy you!).
I just buy CDs because they're handy for parties and things like that.

i started downloading music because the genres i like arent found in cd stores around here nor radio stations.

even now it seems that RIAA doesnt care for dj tiesto or dj mystik and i dont care for ludacris and metallica.

we go our separate ways the riaa and i, ships in the night.

Its currently legal to download music in Canada (including off filesharing networks) although uploading is strictly illegal. This may be changed in a future court ruling but for the time being its not neccessarily illegal. Since 2001 its been legal to download music directly to a cd (bypassing the hd) due to a levy on all recordable media. So as a Canadian citizen I exercise my right to do this and the RIAA can kiss my fat A$$.
