Best Place To Get A Solid, Very Cheap, Laptop?
Hey,
I'm lookin for a laptop that's very basic and solid, but cheap at the same time.
Something like this:
1.2 GHz
40 Gig hdd
256 RAM
CD-R, maybe DVD player
Doesn't need a good video card, wont be using this for games
Need a decent sound card, for listening to music
and I'm looking for this to be around 600-800 bucks, hopefully new.
Possible?

You won't any time in the near future, either, unless some miracle happens and more than 3-4 companies are producing them, and you can actually build your own from parts... don't hold your breathe. Modern laptops are an engineering nightmare.
In terms of things used: you might be able to get something close, but it will have a smaller HD, possible a CD-R but very unlikely a DVD player, and most likely a slower CPU.
Don't worry about the sound card. The on-board stuff for any semi-modern mobo is plenty good enough for anything short of 3d positional sound.
its called Aldies (<== spelling?)
anywaays they sell everything including cheap but pretty good laptops from time to time. but they dont get in lap top supllies very often and when they do people in germany (according to my friend from there) like camped out over night to get them lol.
otherwise the winxp gets bogged down majorly..
Some schools require laptops with a min spec.
I'd check out <a href='http://www1.us.dell.com/content/default.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh' target='_blank'>Dell's Refurbished Outlet</a> for a laptop that cheap, but taboofires is right, you aren't going to get a good laptop that cheap.
However, for something cheap in the refurb heap, I see for $933.00: <a href='http://outlet.us.dell.com/Dispatcher?target=SpecPage&serviceTag=F5BDCY0W&sessionID=1wNZR4MU!-574522929!1586191548!1072745945678&tgtSeg=I' target='_blank'>Inspiron 1100, P4-2400, Windows? XP Home, 14" Screen, 30 G 4200RPM, 256MB RAM, CDRW</a>. But that's without really looking. You can find some sweet deals there.

And before anyone mentions any of their opinions of Dell, just shut the hell up because I don't give a damn about what you think.
