I think that can be said for all sports, it just depends how you get introduced, and how into it you want to get. I love soccer, but hockey is my all time favorate. If you think that what soccer players do with thier feet is any more amazing than what hockey players do with a pair of skates and a strangely shaped stick, than you haven't thought this one quite through yet. Plus it helps that the only pro sport that my region has a team for is hockey, and thier not half bad either
For the record, it's known as soccer in Australia. It's only called "football" where it's the dominant form of football; the game itself is soccer .
Anyway, there's a difference between watching and playing. Soccer is a hell of a lot of fun to play, as defense (well, that's what I play when I play it). Staying with the other guy, reading his movements, blocking him from passing, it's good fun.
Watching, I don't watch a lot of. But, as a game, the one thing soccer has is style. When the world cup (or some sort of important international soccer game) was on TV here, what was so impressive about the play was the grace and skill of the players' movements. Even at a low level, good players move well. The game encourages you to play well, you know? As opposed to, say, Aussie Rules where you can play well if you want, but just scrabbling after the ball will kinda work, too.
I find most games alot funner to play with "aussie rules" expecially chess

it's football because it was called football long before any of the silly other ones came into existance or even the name 'soccer' came around. sure... because countries where ice isn't prominent call 'grass' ice instead.
I don't know which genious decided to name a sport where you spend the vast majority of the game carrying the ball in your arms 'football' when there was a sport already in existance with the name more logically deserving the name, but the fact the tradition continues doesn't score happy points with me
if this happened with a chain of shops the american football chain would find itself in a court of law and have to change it's name. I can understand things like language changes 'colour -> color' as it's just a simplification of the language to make life easier or something but this whole 'football' thing is just an excercise in ignorance. I know I'm not exactly being nice about it which is ironic because I don't even like the sport but having 1 name for 2 different sports is just adding to the difficulties between countries. I'm not being silly and saying it's like war-causing or anything but it's still a gulf no matter how small. Call 'american football' football if you want but don't expect everyone to agree, nor for that matter even like what you're doing.
Heck, I might just honestly resort to calling american football 'soccer' from now on to illustrate the point.

Who cares? All you do is **** people off by going "OMG TEH AMERICAN FOOTBALL??! WTH? ITS TEH BALL IN YOUR ARMS AND YOUR CARRYING AND ITS CALLED FOOTBALL?!THAT SPORT IS TEH SUXORZ!" Try not having a heart attack over it. American Football is a national thing and Americans are used to calling it 'Football' quit telling us to call it American Football or change the name. if there were 2 seperate names for each it wouldn't really rile me so much but it's 1 name for two sports. Chances are that football is the older one and the first to rightly claim the name while soccer is a game where you touch the ball with the foot when? on goal kicks? what about the rest of the game?
Driving on sides of the road is a lil different, it'd be better if everyone did drive on one side of the road worldwide but it's a little bit hard to change without causing accidents that could potentially get people hurt, not to mention actually invalidating whole sections of road in whatever country chose the 'wrong' side because they were built with the opposite in mind. imperial and metric are different too because it's 2 different ways of doing 1 thing, not 1 thing for 2 different things. They can co-exist, unlike the title 'football' for two sports hence the reason some gimp came up with the stupid sounding name 'soccer'. The germans were used to using a certain symbol similar to 'S' twice in some words but in the interests of simplifying the language that's being fazed out. I'm sure people in most of europe were used to their currency but it's euro time for them now.
Face it, soccer is more 'armball' than 'football'.
Who cares everyone knows Rugby is better than both
I has feet, arms, legs and it doesn't stop every 5 minutes. In fact the only time it really stops is if someone gets rather brutally beaten up....
And then theres the people that play it, no padding in one hell of an agressive game, people waking off covered in blood is rather common.
I would however play Ice Hockey if there was an ice rink near that did it. But there isn't...

Will someone explain the thrill of this?
1) You can walk away from the game for 2 hours, come back, and you still have 'obscure team from equally obscure country number 1' with the ball running around 'obscure team from equally obscure country number 2'.
2) The game can usually be called at the first point.
3) The only 'white knuckle' moments happens when they kick at the net, don't actually totally MISS the net, aren't blocked, and manage to get the ball within a few feet of the goalie. Steals? Pft.
4) It takes 15 minutes for one team to come close to scoring a point, and even then it's a miracle that they actually get the ball to the goalie, much less past him.
Now I know you're going to say 'why do people like American Football'. I've never been a big football fan but at least American football doesn't have the exact same (literally) dynamics of a 3d game of pong...

You have no clue what you're talking about. If you don't like Football, fine, but don't you dare complain about the most enjoyable sport there is!
Hey hey, when I resurrected the thread, the last thing I wanted was a lexical debate!
Rather than take sides, how about I try to make all choices seem okay? Basic primer on the history of football/soccer, rugby football/rugby, and American football/gridiron football/that game played in armor fitting for medieval knights.
Basic oversimplified primer:
Numerous ancient civilizations had some sort of football. Largely irrelevant for our purposes, however, just thought I'd get them out there to avoid flames. Now, most modern forms of football derive from a form developed somewhere around the 12th century. Over the years, it picked up steam, and major forms of football were being developed at several schools, notably Eton, Harrow, and Rugby. Any guesses where rugby football will come from?
Football at the time was most similar to the football played in the Premiership and World Cup and so forth, though it was far less formalized, and the critical concept of "football clubs" did not yet exist. However, it was not to be alone for long. Rugby football derives from a form developed at Rugby, early in the 19th century. I've heard it was because some punk decided to disregard the rules and grab the ball... Sounds far fetched, but that's the rumor.
So, where does the stupid name soccer come from? And, yes, it is a stupid sounding name, though an apt one. Not long after, football began gaining in popularity, and several groups formed football "clubs". They then grouped together into the London Football Association, and the term "association football" was slapped on it, to separate it from "rugby football". Over the years, and the annoyance of saying "assocation", it changed to "soccer" football (s-o-c coming from the end of "assoc"-iation). And, of course, all that nasty stuff about "football" was dropped, because we modern folk are lazy as sloths.
So, then, American football? It's a mix of both, with influences from traditional forms of football, and Canadian rugby. Bloody confusing history, something to do with Harvard, etc, but what's important is that it derives later from a combination of the two. It's properly termed "American" football, "pigskin" football (it has a third source from early colonial games involving pig bladders), or "gridiron" football.
However, all these terms are lies, so, who cares? None are the original, all are shortened, and as long as we can be clear about what we're talking about, it's all good. Note, I don't cover Gaelic football or Australian Rules football because, beyond knowing how to play them, I know nothing.

Other sports do indeed involve skill. However, few offer quite the inventiveness of soccer, by no fault of the players. Rather, it's always from some simple rule of the game... American football, for example, loses inventiveness from having committe meetings every play. Basketball from the small court, which causes most impressive actions to be predetermined (no time to think), though they are still impressive due to the almost telepathic connection between players (interesting sidenote: Seattle Supersonics are running an ad campaign entitled "Five as One", which I find a very fitting title for basketball). Hockey suffers from being a contact sport, as a lot of potential trickery and inventiveness is lost when smash and grab becomes an option. And so forth... Every sport has advantages, and invention is soccer's... It's why you don't need goals all the time, or collisions.

Thanks! I could speak about sports which, while I know the rules enough to play (albeit I don't play Australian Rules football because I would be crushed and scrunched into seasoning for the next Emeril Live), I don't know well. Rather, though, I'll let the experts speak:
Australian Rules Football: http://www.iafc.org.au/ Basic Premise: Take the best parts of all the other footballs and put them together (in theory, anyways). That, and be all manly by taking a beating without that pansy armor.

Gaelic football is kinda strange. Interesting, but strange.
I should add, briefly, that there are other kinds of football. However, none are very popular, so I neglected them (and I know absolutely nothing about them).
Cos you will get paid 100x more a year than a doctor or banker or executive or CEO or Financer or anything that requires some REAL work and thats with tip of the top qualifications to boot.
Cos you basicly do f*** all, get rich, and get as many women as you want while being famous aswell.

Its marked its place in history and whether you like it or not its going to stay. FFS! You dont see me telling you Europeans to drive on the right side of the road or measure in INCHES and FEET.
if there were 2 seperate names for each it wouldn't really rile me so much but it's 1 name for two sports.

Come on, it's not rocket science. It's called "football" because it involves a ball which you move with your feet. So whichever game-with-a-ball-you--move-with-your-feet-(well-at-least-for-part-of-it) is most commonly played in the particular country is called football in that country.

Uh what?
but europeans can't be trusted to refer to EVERYTHING literally.. can they?
like if you want a cigarette in america, and ask for a f*g, people will be surprised.. because it's not a normal term.
why all the arguing over simple idioms?

All good sports, all just very different. If you want contact, for example, soccer is so not your thing... When players bump heads they lay on the ground for a billion years trying to garner sympathy, or better yet a free kick.

Thanks! I could speak about sports which, while I know the rules enough to play (albeit I don't play Australian Rules football because I would be crushed and scrunched into seasoning for the next Emeril Live), I don't know well. Rather, though, I'll let the experts speak:
Australian Rules Football: http://www.iafc.org.au/
Basic Premise: Take the best parts of all the other footballs and put them together (in theory, anyways). That, and be all manly by taking a beating without that pansy armor.
Gaelic Football: http://www.gaa.ie/sports/football/
Basic Premise: It's... em. Gaelic football is kinda strange. Interesting, but strange.
I should add, briefly, that there are other kinds of football. However, none are very popular, so I neglected them (and I know absolutely nothing about them).
Cos its the most popular sport on teh planet.
Cos you will get paid 100x more a year than a doctor or banker or executive or CEO or Financer or anything that requires some REAL work and thats with tip of the top qualifications to boot.
Cos you basicly do f*** all, get rich, and get as many women as you want while being famous aswell.
