I like it better when the server appears to be, say, 20/20 so you can't join it but in fact there are two slots free for admins so it can go 22/20. At least that way I can leave auto retry on rather than going through the annoying load/boot process.

The NTFM server has reserved slots, but they don't show up in ASE. I believe there are 14 public slots, and several reserved. When there is nobody on the server with a slot, it shows 14/14 - then when someone with a slot joins, it goes up to 15/15.
It <b>is</b> possible to set up servers like this, and it seems like the best way for everyone involved - nobody gets kicked, and you can actually see how many public slots there are left.
This is just another thread for everyone to whine about .Server owners pay money for thier servers, gives them the right to do w/e they please with it.

What happens when there 4 slots open (like you said), all public slots are full, and 5 reserved joins?
I dunno about amxmod but adminmod allows you to hide reserved slots (the type where youc an't join because reserved not the kick type). This means the server looks full to everyone, including admins. But admins can join via a shrotcut or typing conncet ip:port in the console <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Hidden slots of this type do seem the best imo. Apart from where you have a large amount of reserved slot holders where the kick type is prefered.
p.s. reserverd slots r not evil and are a good thing. Especially for the server administrator who lets not forget without would mean no online ns.

Reserved slots are nice. I had one on CoFR when before I upgraded to Steam. They let you play a good game whenever you want, because the mods have decided that if you're playing, the game will be more enjoyable for everyone involved. It was annoying before I had one to try to get it, but that made the games all the better.
Just find a server and become a regular there. You'll meet some interesting people, and games become so much more interesting. The people in this thread are discussing how slot reservation, when poorly done i.e. 23/24, is irritating. Since you have no complaints, why even enter this thread at all?
For those that still use WON. There used to be a nice tool out there, just like HLSW (however, it was better, since it always had new features which the HLSW crew 'adapted' later). Anyway, with that tool you can change each server's properties, so if there are reserved slots on that server, HLM is going to try to find out if there are. However, if that doesnt work, you can override the number of reserved slots, and it will adjust the number of players/players max on that server.
I still have this tool on my harddisk, but I cant attach it since its 450k. If you really want it, go on #naturalselection on gamesnet and I can send it to you.
I wouldn't have any trouble with reserved slots if more servers would take the courtesy to put the information in the server title. You know, like "Bob's server (2rsrv)". I don't like having to gamble whenever I try to join a server with 1-2 slots open.
I think that as a whole, reserved slots are great. I know that occasionally you get booted at an important moment in the game but it's just a game. Lighten up. Will someone come to your house and execute you if your team loses? I play on ONE server only. I consider the other regulars there as friends of mine and have become quite fond of playing with them. They are all great players and make the game far more enjoyable to me and the other regulars. It's not just some server I go to play games on. It's where I go to hang out. A treehouse for NS players if you will ^^. Complete with the <b>"No Girls Allowed!"</b> sign! If I want to go to the clubhouse and see my friends why should some random player who floats from server to server stop me? He may be a great guy. If he is he won't come to a forum to **** about it. He'll hop back in when he can, possibly explain what happened and shrug it off. If he's the type of person who's just going to complain and whine thinking he'll change the world then I really don't want to play with him anyways.

This is what goes on in a clubhouse. He's the one fronting money and work for the server and website. Show a little respect. Hehe. Passwording the server is definatly an option but for a server to grow new people have to be able to try it out whenever they want. That's because I am selfish. Everyone is when it comes to certain things. A comfortable place where I can chat with people and play casually is such a thing. If you needed some smoke and I only had enough for one person, you bet your **** I'd share though. Just so you don't get the wrong idea about me ^^.
Interrupting others fun is whack I agree. Didn't fully think out my post as I made it. But going from happy to angry so fast shouldn't be happening. I guess I don't fully understand because I don't sweat the small stuff.
Reserved slot holders have to put up with the kicks as well though. Sometimes we are relying on the guy who's going onos that got booted. Or we're in the middle of an attack and start asking the comm for meds to find he'd been booted. But more often than not within 1 minute they're back in the server and in the chair.

I've been talking to people about making a mod for the reserved slot holder where it can't kick aliens with over 50 res or commanders too. Which I think is a good fix for the gameplay problems the holder can cause.

Its all good and fun when the admin is just messing around with people that know him/her. Usually its the cool admins that just slap you around, and that's ok really, I like those admins. It's the admins that ban you for killing them, or admin_llama you in TFC for no reason, or execclient you in SC that get me boiled up. Those guys just plain suck and are usually immature for personal issues of their own. Lots of servers have at least one who does stuff like that.

Epidemic is right, my connection is fine and I get Low Pings most of the time, but often enough, I am 3 higher than the next LPB even though my ping is usually around 85...

I like it better when the server appears to be, say, 20/20 so you can't join it but in fact there are two slots free for admins so it can go 22/20. At least that way I can leave auto retry on rather than going through the annoying load/boot process.

That's not really a reserved slot, per se, just more like 'special access'. What happens when there 4 slots open (like you said), all public slots are full, and 5 reserved joins?
Hidden slots of this type do seem the best imo. Apart from where you have a large amount of reserved slot holders where the kick type is prefered.
p.s. reserverd slots r not evil and are a good thing. Especially for the server administrator who lets not forget without would mean no online ns.

In all seriousness I don't think Epidemic was just going back to the same server over and over and getting dropped. Like me, he probably got dropped on multiple servers without any warning.

The people in this thread are discussing how slot reservation, when poorly done i.e. 23/24, is irritating. Since you have no complaints, why even enter this thread at all?
There used to be a nice tool out there, just like HLSW (however, it was better, since it always had new features which the HLSW crew 'adapted' later). Anyway, with that tool you can change each server's properties, so if there are reserved slots on that server, HLM is going to try to find out if there are. However, if that doesnt work, you can override the number of reserved slots, and it will adjust the number of players/players max on that server.
I still have this tool on my harddisk, but I cant attach it since its 450k. If you really want it, go on #naturalselection on gamesnet and I can send it to you.
I play on ONE server only. I consider the other regulars there as friends of mine and have become quite fond of playing with them. They are all great players and make the game far more enjoyable to me and the other regulars. It's not just some server I go to play games on. It's where I go to hang out. A treehouse for NS players if you will ^^. Complete with the <b>"No Girls Allowed!"</b> sign! If I want to go to the clubhouse and see my friends why should some random player who floats from server to server stop me? He may be a great guy. If he is he won't come to a forum to **** about it. He'll hop back in when he can, possibly explain what happened and shrug it off. If he's the type of person who's just going to complain and whine thinking he'll change the world then I really don't want to play with him anyways.
About abusive admins on such servers...you mean to tell me you've never ONCE teased someone, be it a friend or just some guy. Slapped him around a bit to give your mates a chuckle? This is what goes on in a clubhouse. He's the one fronting money and work for the server and website. Show a little respect. Seriously, saying this doesnt make me less annoyed when I get booted, and I will always be booted because I have problem with lagspikes each minutes or so even though I'm on a 516 (or in that area) kbs connection.

So what's wrong with complaining? None of us in here have said we would change the world, I actually think hell will freeze over before kick-reserve slots are being handled better. After all, indirectly telling us that you dont like us and we **** too much isnt very nice of you either.

That's because I am selfish. Everyone is when it comes to certain things. A comfortable place where I can chat with people and play casually is such a thing. If you needed some smoke and I only had enough for one person, you bet your **** I'd share though. Just so you don't get the wrong idea about me ^^.
Interrupting others fun is whack I agree. Didn't fully think out my post as I made it. But going from happy to angry so fast shouldn't be happening. I guess I don't fully understand because I don't sweat the small stuff.
Reserved slot holders have to put up with the kicks as well though. Sometimes we are relying on the guy who's going onos that got booted. Or we're in the middle of an attack and start asking the comm for meds to find he'd been booted. But more often than not within 1 minute they're back in the server and in the chair.

I've been talking to people about making a mod for the reserved slot holder where it can't kick aliens with over 50 res or commanders too. Which I think is a good fix for the gameplay problems the holder can cause.
