My Computer Is Still A Booger

But this time it's just the CD drives!
Alrighty, so even after my many trials and tribulations with this computer: reformatting, reinstalling XP, getting a new sound card and reainstalling the drivers for it several times, this machine don't wanna work!

Now I'm having some very peculiar problems with my CD drives. Not exactly fatal problems, but very inconvenient. Basically, the summation of the problem is that when I take a CD out (say, a CD full of video files) and put in a new CD (any CD, even blank) my computer does not register that I took out the old Cd and put in a new one, and I can still play the video files on the old CD. Maybe I'm just stupid, but shouldn;t that be IMPOSSIBLE?!?! This is especially inconvenient when I'm installing game or something that requires more than 1 CD, which is basically impossible since it usually take a full restart to get my comp to register that there is a differnet CD in the drive. And also, sometimes some things just won't work at all, even after I restart. For example, today I was tryiing to watch an episode of MST3K which I KNOW works, but nothing would play it from the CD. I tried to copy it onto my HD, but it gave me an error and told me that the "Parameter is bad." I know this is not a problem with just one of my drives, becuase I tried it with both of them and they both act the same. Does anyone know what the heck is going on?!?!?

Depending on the video player and other software you use, it's quite possible that the files are being cached for speed. Does the same thing happen with just regular old data files?

Post the exact error message (or even better, a screenshot), as well as all of your hardware info. Also, did the CD-ROM drive come with specific vendor drivers or does it just use the MS ones? Do you know the exact make and model of the CD-ROM? I've tried to do a little googling on CD-ROM mounting problems and all I get is 85 bajillion pages of Linux issues .

Yes, it does the same thing with data files as well. As for the error message, it reads exactly "Could not copy because the parameter was bad" I went to take a screeny and apparently whatever is wrong with the damned thig has changed in the past 10 minutes..............grr..............well ok there's still something wrong. And apparently just now changing CDs for purposes of screenshots caused explorer to crash but I can't end the process.......so now I gotta reboot. I'll have those screenies up in a few minutes though.

Alright well apparently since Dreamweaver is also deciding NOT to work(which is its own problem), I'll be posting these screenies one by one. Ok, here we have my computer with a CD in the drive, notice that the title of the CD according to this window is "My Disk" which is what all of my burned CDs are titled as that is the default name given by Nero to CDs, but the CD that I had in the drive at the time was an installation CD that came with my sound card. The title of this CD is a number that I am not exactly sure of, not "My Disk." The porgram on this disk SEEMED to work, but I did not actually try to install anything.

Here's the same folder refreshed after I took out the CD. Notice the title is still "My Disk" but there is nothing on the disk.

Alright, at this point I attempted to put in a different CD, but explorer went all crashy crashy, so I rebooted with that different CD in the drive, it looked like this. Notice that there is a video about halfway down the list that starts off "Lords of Acid" This is an AMV that is on this CD. I tested it, it worked fine. I then put in a different disc of AMVs (they just happened to be the handiest CDs I had at the time), refreshed, and the window looked exactly the same. Nothing had changed.

    And here the last one:

I tried testing some of the other video files that were on the list, none of them worked at all, except the one I tried last time, the Lords Of Acid video, but instead of that AMV, this AMV popped up Notice that the clip and the screen say different things. I am friggin stumped. WTH?!?!?

Will I sound like an idiot if I just say windows? Well we all know I always sound like an idiot anyways.

But seriously, all it says is that it's version 5.1.2535.0 of the driver "provided by microsft" It's dated 7/1/2001, and that does seem a bit old now that I think of it......

Hmmm... that's the latest IDE for most Sony-derived CD-ROM's... Do you use any CD ripping/burning software? Nero? Anything CD related at all?

Yeah, I use Nero, the latest version.

the computers at ITT were known to do that as well - and they used win2000 networking. Needless to say, it seems to be a standing problem.

Does it still happen if you uninstall Nero? Did it start happening right away when you reinstalled XP, and before you had put Nero on?

I've used Nero for years and never had this occur, but there's always a first time...
