Full Metal Panic! was indeed quite good. It essentially plays out as a few 'mini-movies' with each 3-4 episodes telling on complete Story Arc.
Then you get the off-beat comedy episodes. It's all good.
The mecha design is pretty cool... but I never really got into the Lambda system they installed...

The second season has also just finished airing. Entitled 'Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!', it is NOTHING like the first season. It's just 13 comedy episodes with much paper-fan hitting.

The first half of the series seemed to deal with/wrap up the storyline and the few episodes I've seen of the second half just seem to be there own mini stories, although I'm sure something surprising will pop out somewhere.

Don't worry, there are plenty of mech battles in the upcoming episodes. You're only up to episode 2. I mostly enjoyed the comedy during the first half of the series. The mech battles came in second.

I honestly think the first episodes are the best. I kept progressively losing interest as time went on. Something about the plot just me apathetic. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> Kiwi's probably got the source nailed though.
