Will alien vs. alien work out?

So I've seen that alien vs alien / marine vs. marine is planned for a future release or something, but from what I can gather, it doesn't look like it'll work that well. Can anyone help me out here?

I've seen specific quotes saying that aliens are mostly melee based and I've seen a clip of how a lvl 1 attacks (run 'n bite em), also theres the recent thread about babbler which I've seen some footage of. So barring a couple unconventional range attacks from the aliens, will this be a (pardon the CS refrence) "knives only" affair? Level 1's strafing circles around each other trying to get the bites in?

Also, I was interested in the 'stinkcloud' that I read about in one of those 'from the frontline' things. I gather its a flyer (lvl 3?) attack, can anyone tell me more?

    Hey Dr_Shaggy,

As you know, Alien vs. Alien (and Marine vs. Marine) modes won't be included in the first version. This is because the modes would have to be done "right" to insure that it doesn't become the "strafe and knife" fest you described, and this would take a great amount of time. I imagine levels would would have to be specifically designed for this mode with certain and special qualities in mind, as well as maybe modified weapons and abilities? I'm not sure (just speculating), but I can't imagine they would just throw the aliens together as-is in the current maps. Like anything else, this dev team will do it "right", making sure it's fun to play.

And yes, the stinkcloud (or spore cloud) is a level3 (flier/lerk) weapon.

Thanks ken, I was thinking along the same lines. As for this sinkcloud, could I hear a little more about it? Does the flyer leave it where said flyer is standing/flying and it hangs there? Is it damage based or confusing/slowing (although I heard there probably aren't any attribute changing weapons)? Whats up with this stinkcloud? Whats an example of a good stinkcloud strategy?

The Spore Cloud is a projectile weapon.  Wherever the Lerk aims, the cloud appears a second or two later at that location (he can target either map geometry or players).  It does light damage over time, but a marine who doesn't vacate the immediate area will end up taking quite a bit of damage - especially if more than one spore is thrown.
