You lost me at "gen or summin" as I have no idea what you are talking about there.

Remember though, that you need TWO brush entities for the joins. One is the teleportation part (which will be entirely transparent regardless of textures you use) and the other is a func_illusionary that has the join signs textured on it. The func_illusionary will do nothing by itself, but with the info_jointeam (I don't recall the names of these brush entities, but you can find them in the drop down list) you can have a join that you can see!

As for your texturing, try to align straight edges of the texture to the edge of the face it is placed on. For example, your columns have a 3d effect that becomes blatantly 2d along the edge of the column on the side closest the camera in that screenshot. Things like that.
Yes, it involves alot of small adjustments and can be tedious at times but that's part of the game. I strongly suggest that when making brushes, DO NOT work in 1 unit increments, but perhaps 4-8? The textures are kind of designed to fit nicely (most of them anyway) within these units and until you need to add small details these unit scales simply make life much easier.

And as for which forum, seeing as to how you are new at this, may I direct you to the newbie mapping forum, which you can find way up at the top of the mapping forum! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
In there is a great place to ask all sorts of these questions! Good luck!
