My first opinion is NO. although you can design things for HL using these tools, neither would work for building a map for the HL engine.
Hammer is a complete editor, easy to use, and universal for all HL related mapping.
edit: there are other HL mapping utils out there, neither are the tools you listed.
end edit.
If you are profecient with 3ds, i would suggest asking around in the model forums if you want to work with modeling.
thus why im asking if there is any way to use 3dmax
mabey i jsut have an issue where hammer may be to simple for me and i cant get past that <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->....

id help with modeling if it was needed but im asking about mapping is because i want to make a map like siege (ahhh good old siege) where there isnt really a point in the game ..(no i dont intend to copy siege but useing it as an exsample)
Although there are things in hammer that take a little bit getting use to, you'll find making maps is easy, especially maps like siege. But they can also be as complex and as creative as you want them to be.
Remember your goal is to complete a map, which is the one thing most have trouble with. I know i've had mappers block on several occasions. And it is as intricate as wriing a book at times.
All i can tell you is to dig in and start building... The forum will be here for any of your questions.
