Mail/news/browser Clients

<div class="IPBDescription">Do I need new ones ?</div> Rather than hijack <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=10&t=59207' target='_blank'>this thread</a>, re: OE, I'll post a new one.

First, my mail client. I've got problems with spam. Who hasn't. In OE, I can set up block lists for domains, but I don't think I can use wildcards. For example, *.pl. Also, I'd like to set up exception rules as well. So block hotmail.* except for abc@hotmail.com. Also, OE can be really slow in connecting and authorising to get my mail. Although this is more likely to be my ISP than OE, I'm sure does have to make such a big song and dance over it. Any thoughts on what I can use instead of OE ?

I use OE to occasionally read the newsgroups as well. Will I need a separate news client or will it be built into my spiffy new mail cient ?

Finally, IE is OK, but I'm fed up with having to nerf its security settings so I can casually browse the net without getting hammered by popups, flash and malware. I'd like another browser that's: quicker, more secure, and doesn't have problems viewing sites that are "built for IE" (you know the ones).

Thanks in advance !

btw, I'm running win2k.

The most effective way to counter spam isn't your mail client. It's to create a new email address and make sure it's never visible intact on the net, anywhere. I've recieved... some three spam messages to my current account (and I have no idea how even they go through). There was a study a while back that suggested doing that, and it's worked wonders for me.

I'd recommend Mozilla. MozMail is a good client (whereas OE ranks around 'complete crap' in my book thanks to the security holes) with polymorphic spamblocking (you tell it when something is spam, it 'learns' and can guess about new mail... gets scarily accurate after a few days on a 10-20 spam-per-day box), intelligent account sorting, and so on.
As well, the Mozilla browser is actually faster than IE or Opera to load and browse... the problem is, the dev team have set full stack traces and live monitoring on the binaries they offer, and turned OFF all the windows optimizations. Which is why it's so slow and has such a huge memory footprint by default. I'm trying to get a friend to cross-compile a fully optimized, non-bugtrack version of the latest Mozilla, which will knock peoples' socks off.

JUST for a mail client, The Bat is apparently a really good one.

Opera is the default for a quick browser, but is still suceptible to a few IE security holes. :b The 'JPG Viruses' that have grown fairly prolific on IRC are one example.

If nothing else, there are a number of great sites to poke around.
<li>www.google.com - Search for 'Mail Client Download'
    <li>www.tucows.com - Great freeware/shareware programs
<li>www.download.com - Commercialized 'freebie' downloads and programs.

I use <a href='http://www.myie2.com' target='_blank'>MyIE2</a> as my browser in combination with <a href='http://www.admuncher.com' target='_blank'>Ad Muncher</a> to stop popups and block ads on pages. I use Thunderbird as an email/news client. If you feel like sticking with Outlook Express, check out <a href='http://www.blackviper.com/Articles/OS/Email/filter1.htm' target='_blank'>Black Viper's Email Filtering Guide</a> to set up Outlook Express filters to sort your spam and stuff automatically. It's neat. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
